Migrating to modern platforms
Moving from legacy to modernized platforms has been challenging for agencies across the government. But three new awards totaling $36 million from GSA’s Technology Modernization Fund promise to ease legacy IT issues for the U.S. Army, the Office of Personnel Management and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, according to a chief technology official at Leidos.
“We see a journey, a journey of maturation and a journey of conversion,” says Leidos' Sandra Lopez. “It's very hard to consume the services and go from one mode of operation to another. It requires a cultural change—a cultural change in the contracting as well as in the consumption side."

The intersection of data and cybersecurity
Responding to cybersecurity threats for much of the past 30 years, says former Navy CIO Rob Carey, invariably meant managing a combination of firewall, intrusion detection and identity management tools — and a growing array of data.
The problem, says Carey, is that “the tools we use in cyber today…are not necessarily big data platforms that can deal with petabytes at a time, or even more, and still be effective.”

Infusing innovation into DOD
It has been seven years since the Pentagon launched the Defense Innovation Unit as a fast-track way to discover and adopt emerging commercial technologies for military use. Despite a succession of DUI leaders and several reboots, only a handful of technology projects have made the leap from Silicon Valley startups to DOD's behemoth operations.

Managing the changing composition of the workforce
Fewer than 10 percent of federal employees are under 30 years old, and at some agencies, more than half of the employees are eligible to retire. In a recent Daily Scoop Podcast, Worldwide Assurance for Employees of Public Agencies (WAEPA) CEO Shane Canfield discusses the changing composition of the workforce and what federal agencies are doing to hire and retain talent.
Canfield highlights the importance of the workforce having a global and holistic view of the agency or department. “[For example] at the Geospatial Intelligence Agency, the younger employees are assigned one project which works its way through the entire agency top to bottom; this gives people a lens into what happens at all levels of the federal government because not every single job has the same responsibility, the same opportunity to really drive decisions and direction. That is tremendously important.”

Better understanding the cryptocurrency threat landscape
Federal law enforcement agencies have seized more than $30 million in cryptocurrency North Korean hackers stole earlier this year. The increase in indictments and prosecutions regarding cryptocurrency is a measure of success for updated requirements and analytics products, says Chainalysis’ Brian Capra.
However, more awareness about how cryptocurrency is used to finance terrorist and cybercriminal activities is still needed, says Capra.
Capra gives his insight into how industry players can help government leaders access to up-to-date intelligence around crypto activities.

Key drivers to improving customer experience
The Internal Revenue Service is just one of the many agencies that will receive funds from the Inflation Reduction Act to help improve their IT systems. According to one industry IT expert, improving customer experience delivery will be an important end goal of that transformation.
“This has been a continual theme from government to really equalize the experience that we see in our personal lives with all kinds of interactions, whether it be retailers, banks, etc.,” says Paul Tatum on a recent episode of The Daily Scoop Podcast. “Government is really putting their money where their mouth is trying to raise their game with that personal experience.”
