Gold Cup Diaries #6: The Penalty Professor Saves the Day

Guatemala and the USA march on after I watched two quarter-finals in one day go straight to penalties after 90 minutes. I’m all for it.Let me tell you about why, about the dream that has become reality for one of Guatemala’s brave boys, and about the goalkeeper who did his homework at Harvard before saving three penalties for his country. And leave me a comment or two - as I flit back and forth across the States, I could do with the entertainment. This is a public episode. Gold Cup Diaries #1: Local hero Luna gets Poch's boys off to a five-star flier

My first matchday experience here in the United States this summer was a big, colourful, family affair. Big Phil, the one-of-a-kind cheerleader I met in the stands wasn’t even all that into football - if he’s off his work and any US national team are playing, he told me, he’ll be there. This time he brought his dad, too. And not to be outdone, my man-of-the-match, Diego Luna of Real Salt Lake (but born here in San Jose) had his family with him to watch him dismantle Dwight Yorke’s boys. More Gold Cup Diaries coming up. I think it’s going to be an interesting summer…. This is a public episode.
