Talking is not Teaching – Interview with Taylor Halverson – Episode 6
This week is part 2 where Taylor offers an approach he calls, “Talking is not Teaching.” It is a complete re-framing of the approach to teaching the gospel that mirrors much of what is being rolled out in Sunday schools and in Priesthood and Relief society with the Come, Follow Me style of gospel learning.

The music for this week is also our second week of featuring music by April Meservy. She recently won an award for her music video at the LDS Film Festival in Orem, Utah. She has such an amazing voice and is such a talent. So, please visit April Meservy’s website.
In last week’s episode, Taylor talked about having an online database of metaphors and analogies that people can draw from, as well as a space where we can have a discussion about the pro’s and con’s of each the metaphors. I thought it was such a good idea that I went out and created an online discussion group just for that. So, if you go now to ldsmissioncast.com/metaphors you will see that we have a discussion forum set up to do that very thing. The discussions are arranged by gospel principle, so faith, baptism, apostasy, priesthood authority, basic gospel principles that are taught most often. Each gospel principle can have a “topic” which is where we would have the metaphor that can be discussed. I have started a couple, like the Ice Cream Man handing out a speeding ticket example for why proper priesthood authority matters when it comes to baptism and other gospel ordinances. Many missionaries have used that example, and sometimes it works with the right audience. Other times it might not. Having these sorts of discussions can be a great resource to those that participate in the discussion, but also for those that are looking for help in their own efforts to teach and share the gospel with others.
So, that address again is ldsmissioncast.com/metaphors It’s free to participate, you just need to open an account, pick a principle or topic, and either add a metaphor of your own, or one you have heard, and then tell your friends to join up. There is nothing quite like it on line, but it won’t be much help without people participating in the discussion. So, please check it out and join up.

Teach the Gospel using Metaphors and Analogies with Taylor Halverson – Episode 5 – LDS MissionCast
Our first interview is a two part episode…sort of. I interviewed Dr. Taylor Halverson who is a teaching and learning consultant at BYU. In other words, he helps teach BYU professors to be better teachers. He offers some much needed advice to all gospel teachers, but especially missionaries. In this first part we discuss the do’s and don’t of teaching the gospel using Metaphor or Analogy. In part 2 we offer an approach that Taylor calls, Talking is not Teaching. It is a complete re-framing of the approach to teaching the gospel that mirrors much of what is being rolled out in Sunday schools and in Priesthood and Relief society with the Come, Follow Me style of gospel learning. This episode is one you are going to want to listen to a number of times to make sure you have these things ingrained in your approach to teaching the gospel. Part 2 will be on next weeks episode, so stay tuned for that.

Following that Shawn Rapier from the Latter-day Lives Podcast where he interviews TV news reporter Mike Anderson about a fun mission story from his mission to England. Mike can be seen almost every night of the week on the NBC affiliate in Salt Lake City, KSL. His inspiring story helps us to see how no service in the work of the Lord is wasted. Music as a Missionary Tool with Garth Smith – Episode 4 – LDS MissionCast
Music has a special way of communicating gospel principles and inspiration from the Spirit. Music can help in missionary efforts in a number of ways as well. This weeks main guest is Garth Smith. Garth and his wife present multi-media firesides that primarily use music to convey truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and the power of the atonement. Garth talks about some of his experiences giving firesides around the country, and he also talks about his own missionary service among the Navajo Indians in the southwest United States. Join Kelsey Edwards, and Nick Galieti in this special musically-themed interview.
Following that interview is our special interview by Shawn Rapier of the Latter-day Lives Podcast. He interviews director and producer Brian Brough, who has created a number of wonderful films, including an upcoming film about Emma Smith; Brian shares a powerful conversion story from his missionary service in the Sao Paulo, Brazil mission about an investigator who, after years of meeting with missionaries was able to come to a testimony of the prophetic calling of Joseph Smith.
To listen to the full interview with Brian Brough and Shawn Rapier, click here.
We end with this episode with a beautiful and inspiring message from Kelsey Edwards in light of the tragic shootings that have recently taken place in Florida.
Please take some time to rate and review our podcast and share it with others. It would mean the world to us to see more people be inspired in this wonderful cause of missionary work.

Missionary Mental Health with Annie Edwards – Episode 3
Missionaries are not immune to the same mental health challenges experienced by a growing portion of the world's population. However, missionaries are typically called to learn their language, learn the gospel, and then teach the gospel so as to bring people unto Christ without much education on this increasingly relevant issue. Out guest on this episode is clinical social worker, Annie Edwards (mother to our host, Kelsey), shares some basic information on the signs of common mental health issues like anxiety and depression, as well as some discussion on best practices when missionaries encounter the mental health issues in themselves or in those whom they associate.
This episode also features our first interview with an outgoing missionary, Tanner Bennett, who shares his inspiring story of how he fought to overcome some challenges to be called on his mission. We end the episode with our Book of Mormon Challenge. All the music in this episode is arranged and/or performed by host, Kelsey Edwards. For full versions of the songs you hear, you can visit her Youtube channel.
We would love to hear from you. Please let us know how we are doing and if there are any guests or topics that you would like us to cover in a future podcast. Thanks for listening!

What Missionaries (and members) need to know about Islam – Interview with Daniel Peterson – Episode 2
Daniel Peterson (left) and Nick Galieti (right - host)
In this fascinating episode, Nick Galieti sits down with legendary BYU Scholar, Daniel C. Peterson, long time professor of Islamic Studies, and founder of The Mormon Interpreter Foundation (a tremendous resource for LDS Scholarship). We talk about the various ways in which Mormonism and Islam are similar, and what ways they are different, as well as some cultural know-how to avoid awkward conversations, or perhaps other missteps that could result in damage to cherished relationships between members of the two faiths. We ended up finding out that this subject seems to be of such importance that the First Presidency has asked Daniel Peterson to write an article for the Ensign on the same subject as our interview! While missionaries specifically going to Africa or Europe will get some valuable information from this episode, anyone anywhere in the world can come to know, and appreciate one of the largest religions in the world as well as how we can more faithfully interact with them. (Update: Daniel Peterson's article in the Ensign on this topic was released in the April 2018 issue of the Ensign Magazine and can be read by clicking here.)
Shawn Rapier (left - host) Nick Galieti (right - guest)
This episode also features an interview with our host Nick Galieti when he appeared on the Latter-Day Lives Podcast with Shawn Rapier. This is a rare interview includes some of Nick's mission stories when he served in the Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission from 97-99. This is rare because in the 7 years that Nick has been podcasting, and in over 600 podcasts which he has produced/hosted/voiced, this is only the 3rd time where Nick was the one being interviewed.
This episode will also have a follow up on our Book of Mormon Challenge from the first episode with a story of the placing of a Book of Mormon in ARABIC! (Seems somehow fitting to go with our episode on Islam and Mormon connections). Tune in to see who is challenged next. Make sure to visit our Book of Mormon Challenge page to follow the list of names and locations that our challenge takes us.
Please take the time to visit the podcast director of your choice, iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and give us a (hopefully positive) rating and review. I can't tell you how much that means to the success of our podcast. It doesn't take long, please take a moment to give us a hand up. Thanks.
