Ep. 219: Feeling burnt out and co-hosting The Black Beauty Club in London

This week it’s a very unscripted, minimally edited episode about two things that have been on my mind. First of all; burnout. I am FEELING it! Listen in and let me know if you’re feeling the same. The second segment is all about the value of the Black Beauty Club. Formed by two New York based women, Tomi Talabi and Asmeret Berhe-Lumax, the Black Beauty Club first emerged on Clubhouse, the audio chatroom app that took over our lives at the height of the pandemic in 2020, and today it is a real life event taking place regularly in New York and more recently and more often in London and Paris. Earlier this week I co-hosted their latest London event, so in the second half of this show I will tell you more about the club, its message and its founders. Ep. 218: Australia-based Makeup artist and creator Tatiana Rose talks showgirls, nostalgia, comparison and performing as an introvert

This week's guest is Tatiana Rose, a makeup artist, photographer and cabaret dancer, based in Australia. I can't remember when I first fell in love with her work, but she was an instant follow. Tatiana’s work is so cinematic and nostalgic and I truly believe there's no-one else quite like her. In this episode Tatiana shares what it was like to grow up in the circus back in Belgium, where she was born, only to move to Australia and have her world turned upside down. Suffice to say, it was a tumultuous time but it pushed Tatiana to really lean into her love of the arts, from painting to ballet, and would eventually lead her to the world of makeup. I hope you love this one - be sure to check out all of Tatiana's social links that I've shared below and if you want to see a clip from our chat, head to my TikTok @charissekenion. If you’d like to leave some feedback then feel free to get in touch over in the DMs on X, formerly known as Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Ep. 216: Meet the Founder with Zanna Roberts Rassi, co-founder of Milk Makeup. Talking makeup, the Manchester indie scene, relationships and more

This week it’s a very special Meet the Founder episode with Zanna Roberts Rassi, one of the four co-founders of Milk Makeup, a cruelty-free, vegan makeup brand that's all about easy, effortless results. Zanna launched the brand back in 2016 alongside her husband, Milk Studios co-founder Mazdack Rassi, as well as Georgie Greville and Dianna Ruth. Zanna and I met during a hectic week of Milk Makeup events that saw her flying from New York to London to Paris all in the space of a few days. In this episode we discuss the early days of Milk Makeup, how Zanna stays fit and inspired - and I also ask how she balances living and working with her husband, all while having two children and a gig as an entertainment reporter for NBC! Zanna, originally from Manchester, UK, is honest and open about her work/life balance and of course shares her can't-live-without Milk Makeup products. Just a heads-up, this is not sponsored! I really hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. Feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on X, formerly known as Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. If you want to see more of the Milk Makeup event head to my TikTok @charissekenion and if you loved listening then it would be amazing if you could leave a review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen, because it really helps people find the podcast. Ep. 215: Supermodels Naomi, Linda, Cindy and Christy retouched with AI for the covers of British and American Vogue September issues - is this the end of the model?

Have you seen the September covers of British and American Vogue yet? For some the images are a celebration of some of the most iconic faces we know, while others think it's amazing that four women over 50 are on the cover together. Still, there are others, including me, with a variety of conflicting thoughts, which is why this episode is dedicated to the supermodels specials. We’ve got the legends Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell on the covers of both issues at the same time but much of the talk has centred around the use of AI retouching. I would love to know your thoughts on these images too. If you’re listening on Spotify please take part in the poll on the show’s page. And feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on X, formerly Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Ep. 214: Let's review Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All-Over Miracle Oil

This week it's another 5-minute review - but it's 10 minutes. That's mostly because I’m talking about the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All-Over Miracle Oil – closely related to the cult product Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant. I’d love to know if you’ve tried this product or the original or if there’s another product you want me to do a 5-minute review on. Email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram or Twitter @beautymepodcast. Ep. 213: Session stylist and brand founder Danielle Igor talks hair texture, fashion and Mary J Blige

This week's guest is London-based session stylist and brand founder Danielle Igor, whose work I fell in love with after The Face magazine included her in its online Beauty Directory. While noticing a certain nostalgia about it, I was struck by the freshness of Danielle's work. Danielle began teaching herself to do her own hair at the age of 9 and today she works with the likes of brands such as Apple, Adidas and Charlotte Tilbury as well as musicians such as Cat Burns, Jorja Smith and Shy Girl. For me, Danielle's work is a celebration of black culture, and in this conversation we discuss cultural appropriation and whether it's necessary that all stylists can do all hair. Along the way Danielle shares her first inspirations and her hopes for the future of her brand Igor Hair. I hope you enjoy this one as much as we did! Ep. 212: Let's review Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

It’s another 5-minute review and this week it’s the much-loved Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. In these short episodes I tell you what the product is, what the brand says about it and break down the packaging, the smell and feel, and give it a mark out of 5 based on whether it matches the claims on the website and how it performed for me. I’d love to know if you’ve tried this product or if there’s another product you want me to do a 5-minute review on. Email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram or X @beautymepodcast. Ep. 211: The difference between hot and pretty and why makeup artist Bea Sweet can't be put in a box

This week’s guest is the amazing London-based makeup artist Bea Sweet. Often compared to Queen Pat McGrath, Bea is the creative behind some truly stunning looks for the likes of everyone from singers Jorja Smith and Twigs to British-Australian actress Miriam Margolyes. In this episode Bea looks back on the products that really got her into beauty and blows my mind when she talks about her formal music training as a child. We have an interesting conversation around what Bea classifies as being ‘hot’ and how it differs from being ‘pretty’ and she references some back in the day websites and influences that lean more into the edgy, darker side of beauty. Also, towards the end of the show, Bea is going to share the 4 products that she cannot live without, and they’re really interesting! I hope you enjoy this one as much as we did. Feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Ep. 210: The problem with Latte Makeup

Today’s episode is a kind of stream of consciousness thing, musing about the 'Latte Makeup' trend. In this short and sweet episode I break down the trend, how the label originated and try to get to the bottom of why the trend kind of irks me! I would love to know what you think - am I reaching or do I have a point?
