Ep. 213: Session stylist and brand founder Danielle Igor talks hair texture, fashion and Mary J Blige
This week's guest is London-based session stylist and brand founder Danielle Igor, whose work I fell in love with after The Face magazine included her in its online Beauty Directory. While noticing a certain nostalgia about it, I was struck by the freshness of Danielle's work.
Danielle began teaching herself to do her own hair at the age of 9 and today she works with the likes of brands such as Apple, Adidas and Charlotte Tilbury as well as musicians such as Cat Burns, Jorja Smith and Shy Girl. For me, Danielle's work is a celebration of black culture, and in this conversation we discuss cultural appropriation and whether it's necessary that all stylists can do all hair. Along the way Danielle shares her first inspirations and her hopes for the future of her brand Igor Hair.
I hope you enjoy this one as much as we did! Feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Ep. 211: The difference between hot and pretty and why makeup artist Bea Sweet can't be put in a box
This week’s guest is the amazing London-based makeup artist Bea Sweet. Often compared to Queen Pat McGrath, Bea is the creative behind some truly stunning looks for the likes of everyone from singers Jorja Smith and Twigs to British-Australian actress Miriam Margolyes.
In this episode Bea looks back on the products that really got her into beauty and blows my mind when she talks about her formal music training as a child.
We have an interesting conversation around what Bea classifies as being ‘hot’ and how it differs from being ‘pretty’ and she references some back in the day websites and influences that lean more into the edgy, darker side of beauty.
Also, towards the end of the show, Bea is going to share the 4 products that she cannot live without, and they’re really interesting!
I hope you enjoy this one as much as we did. Feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Don’t forget, you’ll also find some video clips of our chat on Instagram or you can see it on TikTok @charissekenion.

Ep. 210: The problem with Latte Makeup
Today’s episode is a kind of stream of consciousness thing, musing about the 'Latte Makeup' trend. In this short and sweet episode I break down the trend, how the label originated and try to get to the bottom of why the trend kind of irks me!
I would love to know what you think - am I reaching or do I have a point?

Ep. 209: Let’s review Glossier G Suit Soft Touch Lip Créme
It’s another 5-minute review although it’s definitely a bit longer today as the product I’m talking about is Glossier’s G Suit Soft Touch Lip Créme.

For consistency, when it comes to the ingredients part I will use incidecoder.com, a website specifically created for ingredient advice.

Ep. 208: The complexities and beauty of textured hair; why tech and data is so important with Texture Gap creator and Carra founder Winnie Awa
This week’s guest is the wonderful, award-winning
entrepreneur and hair expert Winnie Awa.
In 2020, London-based Winnie founded Carra, an online platform powered by data to give people with textured hair the world over the advice and product recommendations they really need.
More recently, this June, Winnie launched The Texture Gap, an AI-driven report from Carra Labs that highlights the lack of consideration, innovation and awareness around Type 4C hair, the tightest curl pattern.
In this conversation we discuss the intricacies of black hair, why brands need to wake up to the needs of people with textured hair; why some of us are going back to relaxing our hair and our right to choose exactly what we do with our hair.
This is a conversation that everyone can learn from; from brand leaders to parents who are considering the styling options for their children so don’t hesitate to share this with anyone who might benefit.
I really hope you enjoy this one as much as we did and I’d love for you to take part in the poll over on Spotify if that’s where you’re listening. Feel free to get in touch with feedback over in the DMs on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com.

Ep. 207: Ableism, empathy and creating a higher quality of life while living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome CFS - Able zine founder Claudia Walder
This week’s guest is London-based Claudia Walder, fashion stylist and founder of Able, a magazine created for disabled people.
When Claudia was 23 and working as a stylist she began to experience some health problems that eventually became incredibly debilitating. Six months later she was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
In this episode Claudia shares her experiences, how she had essentially had to nurture herself, why she started Able Zine and why she's taking a break. We also discuss the importance of perception and representation and the intricacies of labelling an illness 'invisible'.

Ep. 206: PSA: Someone else's weight is none of your business
Today we’re talking about weight, or rather, I’m talking about whether we should ever talk about weight when it’s nothing to do with our own body. Meaning, should we ever talk about someone else’s weight, whether it’s gone up or down, whether that’s 'good' or 'bad'.
If at any point during this episode, there’s something you want to say or share, please do find me in the DMs on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me direct beautymepodcast@gmail.com.
TW: Before I share my thoughts, I do want to let you know that I will touch upon eating disorders and miscarriage so if either of those subjects feel too heavy right now, please give this episode a miss. I want to point out this is not an
episode about health and I also want to point out that this episode will not even get into how race, gender or disability impacts the conversation around weight –but that’s something I definitely want to explore another time so I’d love to hear from you if you want to have a conversation.
Please let me know your thoughts; is it time we stopped talking about weight? If you’re listening on Spotify take part in the poll over there and let me know! Or you can email me direct on beautymepodcast@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram or Twitter @beautymepodcast or on TikTok @charissekenion.
