Former MMA Champ Ben Askren Has The Best Reaction To "Quiet Quitting" | The Show

What does the rise of “quiet quitting” say about the future careers of the youngest generation? Is it based on legitimate frustrations with the current career landscape or is it the result of a cultural devaluation of self-reliance and work ethic? Either way, how do we inspire our kids not to fall into this cycle of passivity?Today’s guest, Ben Askren, is anything but passive and certainly isn’t a quitter. He’s a former wrestler and mixed martial artist with numerous championships under his belt. His new autobiography, Funky, chronicles his love affair with wrestling, and how he went undefeated for over a decade in MMA. Throughout his time as an amateur and professional fighter, Ben knew the secret to his success would be to master the art of outworking everyone and he did just that. He now runs and coaches at five wrestling academies, inspiring his students to have the same grit and determination that led to his success. Ben’s perseverance to achieve his goals, and to teach others to do the same, serves as an inspiration to anyone, whether the goal is winning Olympic gold, or being a great dad. Subscribe and ring the notification bell so you don’t miss a single video!_____________________________________Purchase a copy of Ben's book: https://www.amazon.com/Funky-Defiant-Through-Combat-Sports/dp/1637582994Askren Wrestling Academy: https://awawisconsin.com/Ben on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Benaskren?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorBen on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/benaskren/?hl=en_____________________________________Outline:[0:00] Intro[2:13] Starting combat sports[12:55] Ben’s college wrestling career[16:45] Dealing with Olympic loss[18:57] Work ethic, discipline, and self-reliance[22:34] How Ben switched to MMA[26:11] Planning for the future and learning to move on[30:08] Bellator, ONE Championship, and Dana White[35:19] How Ben came to terms with his short-lived UFC career[39:21] Ben’s thoughts on “quiet quitting”[43:25] Turning a profit by developing virtues in young wrestlers[49:47] Ben’s deep thought about parenthood[54:13] What is masculinity?[1:01:13] How Ben raises his kids to share his values[1:08:40] Why male role models matter[1:13:21] Ben’s impact on the world[1:14:43] Outro_____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/m586qUVkqIYMake a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. This Economist Might Memorialize His Rap Career On His Tombstone | Pop Wisdom

Russ Roberts has some wisdom to share. This father of four has spent a long time thinking about why having kids is so special. Russ may be an economist and a college president, but his stories about his grandfather, his dad, and his kids leave no doubt that his first priority is family. His latest book, Wild Problems: A Guide to the Decisions That Define Us, takes the analytical approach of economics and explores how it can be adapted for questions that don’t have measurable data and can’t be answered with calculations. Russ believes that economics is really about figuring out how to lead a good life, and that includes financial questions alongside major life decisions.Russ is currently the president of Shalem College in Jerusalem. He hosts the popular EconTalk podcast and he, along with host John Papola, co-created the viral "Keynes vs. Hayek" rap videos.Subscribe to the podcast so you don’t miss a single episode, and feel free to leave a rating or review!_____________________________________Purchase a copy of his book, Wild Problems: https://www.amazon.com/Wild-Problems-Guide-Decisions-Define/dp/0593418255Listen to EconTalk: https://www.econtalk.org/Russ on Medium: https://russroberts.medium.com/Russ on Twitter: https://twitter.com/EconTalker?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor_____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/HRDarX2Q34QMake a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. These Guys Made YouTube’s First Viral Rap Battle | The Show

What do hip hop and economics have in common? Well, until host John Papola and Russ Roberts met following the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, there was very little overlap between those two topics.John learned of Russ after listening to his popular podcast, EconTalk, which sent John down the economics rabbit-hole. This led to an unlikely collaboration between John, a filmmaker, and Russ, economist. In 2010, “Fear the Boom and Bust: Keynes vs. Hayek” debuted on YouTube and became an internet sensation, practically overnight. It was the first viral rap battle of its kind, predating the popular “Epic Rap Battles Of History” by over 8 months. This project ended up changing the course of John’s career, eventually leading to Dad Saves America. In this episode of Dad Saves America, these two friends discuss their shared passions of economics, storytelling, Adam Smith, and emergent order. Russ recently published a book about thinking through the big questions in life called Wild Problems: A Guide to the Decisions That Define Us.Subscribe to the podcast so you don’t miss a single episode, and feel free to leave a rating or review!_____________________________________Purchase a copy of his book, Wild Problems: https://www.amazon.com/Wild-Problems-Guide-Decisions-Define/dp/0593418255Listen to EconTalk: https://www.econtalk.org/Russ on Medium: https://russroberts.medium.com/Russ on Twitter: https://twitter.com/EconTalker?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author_____________________________________Outline:[0:00] Intro[1:51] What is economics?[11:09] What are trade-offs?[15:13] Incentives matter[19:51] Skin-in-the-game and responsibility[22:59] Subjective value[27:56] Incentives matter, continued[32:04] What is emergent order?[39:14] Trade is not a zero-sum game[41:59] Say’s law of markets and Keynesian spending[46:10] Adam Smith’s theory of why we’re nice to people[51:29] The impartial spectator[54:54] Being loved and being lovely[58:44] How do you know what you want?[1:03:48] Your child is an autonomous extension of you[1:09:46] What is the nature of being a dad?[1:12:48] Making the world better isn’t about grandiose theories[1:15:17] Outro_____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTKcJdgz7U4Make a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. There Are No Solutions In The Real World, Only Tradeoffs | The Show

Should we “trust the science”? What does that even mean?Dr. Carlos Carvalho is a professor of statistics and the Executive Director of the Salem Center for Policy at the University of Texas at Austin. He’s an expert in analyzing data and understanding the tradeoffs of competing policies.Dr. Carvalho doesn’t believe we should “trust the science” because science is not capable of leading people. The scientific method is a process of gathering information about the world, but in the end, decision making lies with each of us, according to our values. That said, Dr. Carvalho knows how important data is to the decision making process. In fact, one of the biggest problems today is that, whether the issue is poverty, climate change, or infectious disease, most people don’t have an accurate dataset on which to base their decisions. In his classes, he teaches the current generation of college students how to avoid these pitfalls and develop reliable critical thinking skills to carry with them into their lives after college.Subscribe to the podcast so you don’t miss a single episode, and feel free to leave a rating or review!_____________________________________Dr. Carvalho's Website: https://faculty.mccombs.utexas.edu/carlos.carvalho/index.htmlSalem Center for Policy: https://salemcenter.org/_____________________________________Outline: [0:00] Intro [1:35] The value of data and statistics [5:47] College students are missing important facts [14:49] The cause of widespread ignorance [20:16] Should we “trust the science”?[26:49] No solutions, only trade offs [29:18] Economics is the study of scarcity [32:39] If government interferes, it will be more expensive [38:46] Cognitive dissonance when confronting economic truths [44:54] There are no “right” answers to parenting [49:30] Collective human behavior and wellbeing is a mystery [53:54] Decision making is all about values [1:03:05] Interest, mortgages, and the value of time[1:06:54] Social reinforcement of untrue orthodoxy [1:12:50] The “expert class” tends to seek power, not truth [1:17:47] What’s so special about America? [1:25:37] Outro_____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/9IR_jlFCcCwMake a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. He Couldn’t Beat His Dad In Arm Wrestling Until His Mid-20s | Pop Wisdom

Brian Gitt has some wisdom to share. The example his dad set helped Gitt develop the entrepreneurial and adventurous spirit he has today, and a few experiments with fireworks taught him a lesson or two about risk-taking along the way. A little mischief can be good for kids, but Gitt recalls how he and his friends “could’ve burned down the whole neighborhood” on a few occasions.Gitt has spent his whole career as an entrepreneur in the energy sector and cares deeply about protecting the environment. He also believes that our energy production has to serve the needs of people, not ideologies, and so he rejects the quasi-religious notion that fossil fuels can simply be replaced with solar, wind, or any other of the highly inefficient forms of renewable energy currently on the table.Subscribe to the podcast so you don’t miss a single episode, and feel free to leave a rating or review!_____________________________________Brian's blog: https://briangitt.com/Brian's Twitter: https://twitter.com/BrianGitt?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^authorBrian's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brian-gitt_____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Omx-6BX_bvQMake a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. Dreaming Of A Solar-Powered Future? Don't Hold Your Breath. | The Show

Brian Gitt’s conversion from mainstream environmentalism was an accident. For decades, he believed that solar and wind power were the future, and that it was only a matter of time before fossil fuels were a thing of the past. However, after creating a startup that helped homeowners compare utility costs, he realized that the numbers just didn’t add up for the environmentalists’ favorite kinds of energy.Gitt has spent his whole career as an entrepreneur in the energy sector and cares deeply about protecting the environment.
