We need to remember that discomfort can be the first step in genuine learning, but only if we’re open to it.Today’s guest, Malcolm Collins, is a neuroscientist, serial entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and one of Amazon's best selling non-fiction writers. He and his wife Simone are reimagining education and much more through their work at the Collins Institute and the five Pragmatist’s guides they have written together. Malcolm and Simone also recently started their "Based Camp" podcast, which focuses on how humans process the world around them and the future of our species._____________________________________Purchase a copy of The Pragmatist's Guide To Life: https://www.amazon.com/Pragmatists-Guide-Life-Creating-Questions-ebook/dp/B079LRHPM7?ref_=ast_author_dpLearn more about the Collins Institute: https://collinsinstitute.org/Check out "Based Camp" on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SimoneandMalcolmCheck out "Based Camp" on Substack: https://basedcamppodcast.substack.com/_____________________________________Outline:[0:00] Intro[0:55] What is pragmatism?[6:56] Malcolm’s career background[9:09] Autism, emotion, and reason[11:40] What is an objective function?[17:01] How do you determine what’s true?[23:50] Intrinsic value and human dignity[28:29] Wokeness, viruses, and shadow banning[35:04] Will AI serve like personal guardian angels?[39:50] Your brain makes up reasons for what you do[45:39] How your ideological tree develops[51:55] The evolutionary value of “no pain, no gain”[56:54] How do you optimize your objective function?[58:26] You can shape your brain’s autopilot system[1:06:54] Culture, community, and tradition[1:14:39] The Judeo-Christian vulnerability to apocalypticism[1:19:59] Be the best side character you can be[1:29:50] Make your self-narrative interesting[1:32:47] Masculinity changes when you become a father[1:45:15] Reigniting old traditions and building new cultures[1:52:15] Outro_____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/W5lpH9ePI6oMake a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. How Dads Can Harness The Force | The Show

There are basically three ways to learn how to be a good person. We learn by doing and making mistakes, we learn by observing what other people do, and we learn from the stories in our culture. Popular stories play an outsized role in our understanding of virtue and morality, and few stories can match the awesome power of Star Wars.Today’s guest, Stephen Kent, has figured out how to use one of the most iconic and influential American stories as a common language to teach moral lessons to children. In his book, How the Force Can Fix the World, Stephen takes a deep dive into the virtues of Star Wars, and how they can be an antidote to our modern problems. From the fearlessness of the Jedi, to the hope instilled by the Rebel Alliance, and the redemption sometimes found by the Sith, he lays out an epic set of virtues worth learning from a galaxy far, far away.We worked with Stephen to create a great viewing guide so that you and your young Padawan can put his work into practice while watching your favorite Star Wars scenes. This episode is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by the Star Wars franchise or Disney._____________________________________Download the Star Wars Viewing Guide: https://action.dadsavesamerica.com/may-the-4thPurchase a copy of How the Force Can Fix the World: https://www.amazon.com/How-Force-Can-Fix-World/dp/1546000461Visit Stephen's website: https://www.stephendkent.com/Follow Stephen on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Stephen_Kent89?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor_____________________________________Outline:[0:00] Intro[2:14] Growing up as a Star Wars prequel fan[4:56] Why write a book about Star Wars?[9:12] Stephen journey as a dad[11:22] Empathy, masks, and redemption[25:13] How Stephen and his dad supported each other[31:02] Fear, control, and hubris[44:10] Hope, freedom, and boundaries[55:11] Anyone can fall to the dark side[1:00:46] Shared stories are a societal foundation[1:04:41] Outro_____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/id4byFG2dlMMake a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. Why are fathers and father-figures so important in film? What can we learn about ourselves as film-makers and film fans from the way we utilize the notion of father as a driving character within these stories we tell on the screen? How should we think about storytelling and what compels us to focus on our relationships with fathers to articulate complex human dynamics?Oscar winning actor Troy Kotsur and director Emma Westenberg joined Dad Saves America host John Papola for a conversation about the portrayal of fatherhood in film at SXSW 2023. They explored what responsibility filmmakers have to challenge common stereotypes about dads throughout pop culture, the impact of their own dads on how they see the issue, and Emergent Order Foundation's upcoming short documentary about Troy's relationship with his dad._____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/f-_yfcWwcs4Make a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children.
