When labor is scarce, wages go up. But hiring also takes longer, and that matters greatly, because it compromises output. Workers who leave voluntarily aren’t soon replaced, and in their absence the workers who remain have to carry a greater load.
The problem has gotten so bad that many tech vendors have had to create their own digital training and certification ecosystems in order to ensure a sufficient supply of talent. They’re doing so to meet not only their own needs but also, perhaps more important, the needs of their customers.
Employers must work actively to draw from a broader talent base.
Employers must invest in “growing their own.”
Employers need to implement fundamental principles of supply-chain management.

The security robots, plus the upcoming TSA deadline on screening unique cargoes that currently are exempted from security screening. We're talking stuff that's too large for a container or has other unique properties that preclude normal screening - and that could pose problems for shippers if they aren't ready. There's also a security component to my Mexico City story last week, with more cargo having to move by road between two Mexico airports now, which increases the theft risk.
