Growing "Jacob's Ladder" Plant
Once upon a time, the Jacob’s ladder plant was called the “charity plant”, although it shouldn’t be confused with the Mahonia species that also bears that common name. It’s also been called “Greek valerian”, although it’s not a valerian. Confused yet? You shouldn’t be. Jacob’s ladder gets its common name from the ladder-like or pinnate structure of its leafy foliage. And in the spring and early summer months, it shoots up slender stalks from which hang clusters of bell-like flowers. A shade-loving variety, it has origins overseas, but is often found in the United States in garden cultivation now. It’s such an easy-growing plant that it can even be considered slightly invasive if it’s in the right environment! However, it can be maintained and kept to its beds as well. Let’s delve deep into the world of the Polemonium species, and I’ll tell you all about this beautiful perennial! Wiping Your Wasp Woes Away
Have wasps decided that the eaves of your house look like a fantastic place to move in? I know I’ve had troubles with them here in California well into the fall, although they’re at their most active in the summer. Eventually, you sigh and start shopping for the best wasp trap. But do you really need a trap, and if so, what kind do you want? Are lures necessary, and if so which ones? Are those internet stories about dryer sheets and paper bags real, and if so, does it actually work? Should you buy a commercial-made trap or make one? I’m going to walk you step by step through deciding if this is something you should be investing in, teach you all about how they function, and answer questions about home methods. When you’re done reading, you’ll be ready to deal with them no matter what! How to Grow Lettuce Microgreens Fast and Easy
There’s nothing better than having access to fresh, nutrient-dense salad greens that practically grow themselves, right? I can already hear you saying, “Yeah, that’d be nice, if they existed…” Well, they do, and they’re called microgreens. Practically any plant can be grown as a microgreens, which is just the even-younger cousin of baby greens. Typically harvested around 8-20 days after planting, microgreens are the quickest turnaround crop you’ll ever grow in your garden. Today, we’ll be growing lettuce or salad mix microgreens, which I consider one of the most basic types of microgreens you can grow, making them perfect for a beginner.
