Ep. 9 - The Antidote to Evil
"A family that prays together stays together." How often have we heard this saying? How often do we roll our eyes and think to ourselves, "oh gosh, here we go again!" Don't be ashamed men, I used to think the same thing. The fact is the healthy do not need a doctor, but the sick. And men, unfortunately, we are all sick. Thankfully, Jesus, the Great Physician, gives us an antidote to our illness...prayer!St. Vincent de Paul summarizes prayer perfectly when he states, "Give me a man of prayer and he will be capable of everything. He may say with the apostle, “I can do all things in him who strengthens me.” Prayer transforms us. God does not need our prayers. God knows everything already. Prayer is for us, gentlemen. Without prayer, we have no captain driving our ship. Prayer is what keeps us grounded and humble to recognize how great God is and how minuscule we are. Listen to part 1 of our 3 part series on prayer! See why the phrase "hound of heaven" is Father Dom's favorite expression of Jesus and why "The Hound of Heaven," was once called "the most magnificent poem ever written in English" by the great G.K. Chesterton to which J. R. R. Tolkien, the master behind "The Lord of the Rings" stated Chesterton was not giving the poem the credit it deserves. James' Challenge: Start praying! 1, 5, 15, 60 minutes. Doesn't matter! Begin today. Simply ask Jesus to be present in your life, to direct your path, and give you peace. Jesus always meets us where we are at. He is always knocking on our door. Let Him in and see what He can do! As always, please pray for us! Ep. 8 - Terror of Demons!
THE SLAYER OF DEMONS!...okay, that may not be a title given to St. Joseph, but it was a slip of the tongue by James and just maybe it will be added to his litany one day.For those of you who do not know, this is the year of St. Joseph as declared by Pope Francis! This day and age is especially trying for families and most glaringly men. Turn to St. Joseph, the patron saint of our beautiful Church. St. Joseph is a man who was chosen by God to lead the Holy Family. He loved his wife and son more than anyone and his actions literally spoke volumes. There is now Josephology happening in our age! Some fun facts for you men about this incredible man:He is the patron saint of our beloved Catholic Church, unborn children, fathers, workers, travelers, immigrants, and a happy death.Feast Day: March 19thSt. Joseph the Worker: May 1st, to counter the Communists' May Day by Pope Pius XII Month of March is dedicated to St. JosephWednesday (yes, every Wednesday!) is dedicated to him as well. For a man who wasn't venerated deeply in the Church until the 15th century, we are certainly trying to catch up! In this episode, James and Fr. Dom will dive into all things St. Joseph, this incredible man who was truly a man of silence. The Gospels don't record a single word of this man's life but his actions have been written about for centuries. A man who gets spoken to four times by angels is a man we all must emulate and listen to. Since he didn't say a word, we must follow his actions. Join us to find out why St. Joseph was depicted as an old man in early Catholic art, why James thinks St. Joseph should have a title added to his litany, how much St. Joseph loved our beloved mother, why St. Joseph was probably a young, strapping man and what the Gospels say in regards to this fact, and how we can take St. Joseph's faith and pray to him for it! Father Dom's Challenge: Think before you act and speak. Ask the Holy Spirit to enter in the simple moments of your life (or even the chaotic times) to direct your words and actions to fulfill His will. Men, the Holy Spirit will never steer you in the wrong direction.St. Joseph, pray for us!Be sure to follow us on Facebook and support us on Patreon. Most importantly, say a Rosary for this podcast and spread the word to other men! Ep. 7 - Fatherhood Is Still Changing History
Often it is said that history repeats itself. If fatherhood has changed history before, why not again? Why not you? We are ALL called to be fathers in one way or another. Whether you are a biological father, spiritual father, foster father, or simply mentoring young men, never underestimate the importance of your impact on people's lives. Listen now to discover James' personal testimony on his reluctance to be a father, Fr. Dom's path to the priesthood, and how cervical mucus somehow plays a role in this episode. Say what?! James' challenge! James has taken back-to-back episodes now. This is specifically challenging you married men who have chosen not to pursue fatherhood for whatever reason. Believe us men, James was there at one point. He wasn't ready. He wasn't mature enough. He didn't want to miss out on watching non-stop sports. The excuses were endless. Ask God specifically, "how are you calling me to be a father?" We are all called to fatherhood in some way. Ask God how he is calling you to fulfill your role as a father today. Ep. 6 - Fatherhood Changes History
Fatherhood changes history. Hyperbole? At first glance, maybe. But when you think about it and especially after you listen to this episode, you realize it is not hyperbolic at all. When fathers are present, active, and putting their families first, our culture thrives. Lately, fathers have become lazy and allowed the culture to dictate to them how to run their lives. Men, enough is enough.Listen now to discover how Our Lady of Seven Sorrows has easily become one of James' new favorites and why Father Dom thinks men have no excuses to pray the Rosary (including a special offer just for our listeners!). James' Challenge: I must admit, I am stealing this one from Dr. Taylor Marshall. Pray the Rosary every day or you or not on the team! I love that line. Our Blessed Mother Mary instructed us to pray the Rosary every day. Who are we to deny our Holy Mother? Make sure you follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Ep. 5 - Is It Manly To Love?
Is it manly to love? Love is a word that is floated around too often in our society without much attachment. We say "I love you," "I love spaghetti!", "I love lamp!" Thanks, Brick. But to truly love as a Catholic man might be a bit trickier than you think. Bishop Barron often states, "To love is to will the good of the other as other." What the heck does that mean?! Well, you will have to listen to find out more!Join James and Father Dom on another amazing episode diving deeper "Into the Breach." They discuss how a Catholic man loves as a friend and a husband. Somehow Father Dom asks the audience to buy him a red Ferrari that he will donate to charity. They give a shout-out to the amazing Catholic expert on Humanae Vitae, sexuality, and bioethics Dr. Smith Janet Smith. They dive deeper into why pornography is destroying men and why the battle for chastity is man's greatest challenge today. Wow, that was a lot! Be sure to check out all the resources for more great information to dive deeper and join the discussion.Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for more witty sayings, great content, and a heck of a lot of Catholic manliness. DO NOT FORGET Father Dom's Challenge! This is probably the toughest one yet. Honestly and prayerfully, ask the Holy Spirit about the people you surround yourself with. Ep. 4 - Behold! The Epitome of Masculinity is Before You!
What does it mean to be a Catholic man? Often times the simple questions are often the most challenging and cause us to reflect on something deeper within ourselves. Self-reflection is a skill I (James) am not particularly gifted at but something I strive to improve daily.Join your hosts as you learn how manly of a man Jesus actually was (He is the epitome of manhood after all, why you will be constantly asking yourself, "What would Hung Ly do?" and why James and Fr. Dom have a particular gift for coming up with T-shirt slogans. You will also hear about the Hall of Fame of Holiness (AKA saints) major players in the manhood world. St. Joseph, St. Pope John Paul II, and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati are just some of the holy men mentioned this episode. Men, if you are not asking these formidable gentlemen to pray for you, you better get to asking! You may also appreciate Father Dom's particular joy in asking for the "no-name saints" to pray for him. After all, they have no one asking for their prayers, right? And finally, you will get some practical tips that you can start doing right now, this very day even, to do better than what you are currently doing. Hint: if you aren't going to Mass weekly (at minimum) or praying daily (minimum) now might be the time to start. Fr. Dom Challenge: Get to confession! In an absolute loving but intense way, get in a state of grace men. Jesus is waiting for you in this incredible sacrament. Yes, you will feel like crap leading up to it. Yes, you will be sweating as you list your sins. But man, oh man, do you feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders afterward? Or like the monkey has come off your back? Ep. 2 - Forward men! Step into the breach!
In this episode, Fr. Dom and James begin part 1 of their 5 part series on "Into the Breach," an apostolic exhortation issued by Bishop Thomas Olmsted in Phoenix in 2015. Bishop Olmsted came out throwing haymakers stating that men have failed in society which has led to chaos, disruption, and disappointment. For too long men have forsaken their duties and allowed Satan to penetrate the walls and create a breach in our defenses. Although this sounds like the makings of an epic novel, you will have to settle for James and Father Dom's take on the matter. Fr. Dom begins his modus operandi on Adam failing to defend the garden and allowing the serpent to enter. James quotes Shakespeare and somehow ties it into the military. James quotes stats that should leave all men preparing for the spiritual battle to defeat Satan. And so much more!Join Father Dom and James right now and change your family tree! DO NOT NEGLECT the Fr. Dom Challenge! This week, you must find a saint! Saints come in all shapes and sizes. You picked your Confirmation saint for a reason right?! Learn his or her life deeply and begin to ask for their prayers. If you have no idea what a Confirmation saint is, there are plenty of resources out there on saints. Find one you can resonate with. Find one who challenges you. Find one who makes you want to be a better man. We can all be saints. It is not impossible. Make The Manly Catholic even more manly and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more amazing content that will boggle your mind and to create communities with other men. If you could be a gentleman and a scholar, please support this podcast on Patreon. If nothing else, it will help James buy his sons another apple sauce.
