What Can You Learn from a Successful Writer?
In the previous two entries in this series, we have taken a look at the destructive nature of jealousy, and why you should focus on what you can do to make yourself successful rather than spending your emotional energy being envious. Let’s dive into three questions that will help you focus on attitudes and actions that will spur your writing success. We’ll tackle the first one here today. Also, notice that each one begins with “what.” The first question is: What can I learn from this person? On this episode, you’ll learn the first question you should ask when you’re jealous of another person. *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matter’s Most. Lessons from Publishing My First Book (with Ken Hannaman)
I’m thrilled to feature this conversation with my good friend Ken Hannaman. Ken is a Possibility Mindset Coach who has a never-ending thirst for knowledge and personal self-discovery. Ken is an executive in the corporate space and has just written and published his first book, which is titled Ungraduated: Finding Your Why and Dropping Out of Outdated Belief Systems. Ken is also the host of the excellent podcast, Ungraduated Living & Learning, which I highly recommend! Ken is one of the most driven, thoughtful, yet kind and curious people I know. Through his leadership experience as well as his personal learning, he has gained the perspective that while formal education is necessary for some basic life skills, what we all really need is personal & self-driven learning. He believes we often need to “ungraduate” from the old school of thought that has been socially programmed into our mindsets. (I love his thinking!) Ken is part of our Daily Writer Community, and it has been a blast seeing his book come together over the last year or so. In this conversation, Ken shares why he wrote his book, the biggest challenges he faced, how he formed his launch team, and some advice for authors. As a bonus, we also get into some topics from his book, including labels, personal abundance, and growth. Ken is a master thinker, and I highly encourage you to get his book if you want to be challenged in your thinking. Ask What, Not Why
Have you ever felt like you live in a room with invisible walls that have you trapped? You’re trapped by questions like this: Why does that so-and-so writer get all the attention? Why do they have more book sales? Why is my blog traffic so stagnant? Why isn’t anyone paying attention to me? Sound familiar? On this episode, you’ll learn how you can reframe your questions, so that you can have an abundance mindset, instead of a poverty mindset. *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matter’s Most. Their Success Doesn't Mean Your Failure
If you’re alive and breathing, you have struggled with jealousy. It’s part of the human condition. But for most writers, jealousy is more than an occasional struggle. It’s a daily battle that threatens our very souls. It’s nearly impossible for us to separate ourselves from our creative work. It’s part of who we are. On this episode, Kent begins a series on jealousy and kicks it off with why we shouldn’t be jealous of others’ success. *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matter’s Most. The Room Where It Happens
In the musical “Hamilton,” Aaron Burr sings a number called “The Room Where It Happens.” He is upset that his rival, Hamilton, has been invited into the inner circle of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson to help make decisions that will impact the future of the country. All the while, Burr is left out in the cold. We all want to be around influencers and decision-makers. However, you don’t have to wait for an invitation. Danielle Cook: The Power of Owning Your Story
As writers, we spend a lot of time focusing on helping other people tell their stories. Maybe you do client work, coaching, run a writing community as I do, or interview others for a podcast, as I do as well. Even if you only write for yourself, much of your time is spent thinking about how you can help other people live a better story. It is important, however, that we don’t forget about our own stories. Those are perhaps the easiest ones to neglect. It’s easy to downplay or even disregard the value we bring to the table, and what others can learn from our experiences. That’s why I’m excited to feature a conversation with my friend Danielle Cook. Danielle is a writer and entrepreneur who has worked with over a hundred business owners, creatives, and thought leaders who were ready to break through the noise and speak to the heart of their ideal audience. Whether it’s crafting the book you’ve been dreaming of or writing a bio that strikes the perfect balance of passion and expertise, Danielle can take your ideas and visions that have been swirling in your head and get them down on paper. Danielle believes that the words we use transform our lives, our businesses, and our world. She is committed to helping anyone who is ready to use their voice to break through the noise and speak to the heart. In this conversation, Danielle shares her story and how she got involved in business and writing, what it means to own your story, and some actionable steps to writing an engaging bio that uses the magic of story to build the know, like, and trust factors that are so important in communication. The Power of a Handwritten Note
There are few things in life as powerful as a handwritten note sent through the mail. Why? Because we all want to feel noticed. We want to feel special. We love the feeling that someone took the time to hand-write a note, put it in an envelope, and mail it. As a writer, you interact with a lot of people: readers, other writers, clients if you have them, people who have helped you with publishing, and others connected through podcasts and media. Whenever someone does something for you, send a note of thanks or appreciation. On this episode, you’ll discover a quick and thoughtful way you can use your writing skills to connect with others and show them how much they mean to you. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business?
