Are You Listening to Your Life?

Author and teacher Parker Palmer wrote a profound little book called Let Your Life Speak. In the book, he writes, “Before I can tell my life what I want to do with it, I must listen to my life telling me who I am.”   What does it mean to listen to your life? It means paying attention to the signposts telling you where you should go.   On today's episode, you'll discover how to recognize the signs that offer the best direction for your life.  *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matters Most. Make Your Own Luck

The greatest superhero movie ever made is 2008’s The Dark Knight. The movie is admired for many reasons, the biggest of which is Heath Ledger’s amazing performance as Batman’s arch-nemesis, the Joker. But one of the most underrated aspects of the film is Aaron Eckhart’s portrayal of Harvey Dent, the Gotham City District Attorney. Before he becomes the villain known as Two-Face, he is known for his positive attitude, so much so that he carries a two-headed coin and says, “I make my own luck.” On this episode, you'll learn to develop the same skill. *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matters Most. Writing The Go-Giver Marriage (with John David & Ana Mann)

Picture this: You are the co-author of an enormously successful business book series. You want to write another book in the series, but it’s on a very different topic than the others. You also want to write it with your wife, instead of your original co-author. And, by the way, you’re also going to use a different publisher than the original series. Sounds like a challenge you would back away from? To most people, yes… but not for John David Mann! The series I’m talking about is the ultra-successful Go-Giver book series that began with 2008’s The Go-Giver book. The series was an enormous success, and it also happens to be one of my favorite books of all time. John David Mann and his co-author, Bob Burg, impacted countless lives with those books. However, it’s primarily a business book series, and John wanted to write a Go-Giver book on marriage with his wife, Ana Gabriel Mann. They successfully pushed through all the potential challenges of a special situation like this and just released The Go-Giver Marriage: A Little Story About the 5 Secrets to Lasting Love. Let me share a brief bio of each of them, so you can have a sense of how amazing they are. John David Mann is co-author of more than thirty books, including four New York Times bestsellers and five national bestsellers, including The Go-Giver (coauthored with Bob Burg), which has sold over 1 million copies and won the 2017 Living Now Book Awards Evergreen Medal for its “contributions to positive global change.” He is married to Ana Gabriel Mann and considers himself the luckiest “mann” in the world. Ana Gabriel Mann, MA, holds a Master’s degree in clinical psychology and dance-movement therapy from Antioch New England, where she specialized in working with adults and family therapy. In addition to her work in family therapy and her 5 Secrets marriage coaching, she has been clinical director for a program for people with Alzheimer’s disease, co-founded New England’s first college of Chinese medicine, and worked as a corporate consultant, speaker, trainer, and coach. I’m excited I was able to chat with John and Ana about their unique opportunities in writing this very special Go-Giver book. They shared their process of writing the book, how they create a parable-style book, why they include a teaching section at the end of the book, how they divided up the work, the value of storytelling in the teaching process, and much more. Whose Advice Are You Taking?

One of the most fascinating aspects of being a writer is that lots of people are eager to give you advice. In fact, there is a giant industry of books, conferences, retreats, coaching, and podcasts (this being one of them!) devoted to giving you writing advice. However, be careful who you’re listening to. There is a whole group of people who are eager to give advice about writing and book marketing but have not actually accomplished much. On this episode, you’ll be reminded that it’s important to be careful who you get advice from. *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matters Most. The Art of Letting Go

Let’s talk about one of the hardest truths to swallow. Here it is: the circle of relationships that brought you to where you are is not the circle of relationships that will take you to where you want to be. Most of us don’t like conflict. We don’t want to feel like we’re leaving others behind. This fact alone prevents a lot of people from growing because they are not willing to make tough changes to their personal and professional relationships. On this episode, Kent shares how your relationships impact the ways you invest in yourself, add value to others, and expand your impact. *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matters Most. Are You Ready to Invest in Yourself?

If you really want to grow your network and reach a higher level of success in your life as a writer, you must invest in yourself. There is a lot you can learn from books, conferences, videos, and podcasts. But those can only take you so far. The true test of how badly you want success is whether you are willing to part with your hard-earned cash in order to learn more and invest in deeper relationships. On this episode, you’ll discover that one of the best ways you can invest in yourself is through paid communities. *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matters Most. Successful by Association

Let’s talk about one of the more uncomfortable truths of the author life. It has nothing to do with books, but it has everything to do with how others perceive you. And therefore, that means it has everything to do with your social standing and how much others want to be around you. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: people judge you by the company you keep. On this episode, you’ll be reminded that your impact is heightened—or hindered—by the relationships you have. *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matters Most. How Can You Help?

Jealousy causes us to be inwardly focused. The more we fixate on what others have, the more angry, resentful, and bitter we become. You can’t be at your best as a writer when you’re angry, resentful, and bitter. Those emotions are like an empty well that is dry and lifeless. They will suck the life right out of you. On this episode, Kent shares a simple but powerful way you can replenish yourself and help others at the same time. *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matters Most. What Do You Offer That is Unique?

As writers, sometimes we see another person’s success and believe we should have it as well. But when you stop and think about it, the logic doesn’t add up. Creativity is like a thumbprint. Everyone has creative gifts (whether they realize it or not), and everyone has something unique to offer the world. Creativity is like the thumbprint of your soul. On this episode, you’ll be encouraged to use your creative gifts to add value to the world.   *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father’s Wisdom on What Matters Most.
