Nvidia, Roblox, Airbnb, Palantir and many more! Huge earnings roundup!
What does Paul think of Charlie Munger? Find out in this week's PlayingFTSE Podcast!
We kick off this week with the big UK story — that Greggs and Primark have teamed up to launch a range of Greggs-branded apparel. Steve D used to own Greggs shares, find out what he thinks about the new range of merch. Obviously, it’s not as good as ours, but what is?
This week’s game is from Steve W. It’s called “Topiary” because it’s about fancy hedges. Paul and Steve D spend this week’s game trying to work out how much hedging a portfolio in one or another way would slow down someone’s overall returns. None of us hedge, though it’s getting tempting in this environment. See how Paul and Steve get on guessing wildly at the returns of gold, an inverse tracker, and some triple leveraged instruments.
After that, it’s on to some big earnings news. It’s still earnings season. AirBNB reported their earnings this week. The big news is that they’ve turned a profit (on the quarter, not the year). Steve D owns this company and gives us his view. Paul considers the importance of the company making its way into the stream of consciousness of his parents, and Steve W thinks about the importance of turning a profit sooner rather than later.
One that didn’t do so well is Roblox. The stock got hammered after its earnings, though the market’s reaction might or might not be justified. Steve D illuminates the company’s “bookings” category, its growth, and the structure of the business. Paul discusses bank transfering money to kids and Steve W reflects on the fact that he’s probably now losing in the 5 stock sampler.
Nvidia also reported earnings this week. Steve W has the report on this one. They might not be buying ARM, but things are going pretty well at Nvidia. Steve D talks about the numbers that he might be interested in this company at and Paul wonders about the company being a glaring opportunity.
Last up it's Palantir. Nobody knows what this company does, including us. That's why we don't own it. Shares are down again after the company's earnings report, but we don't know why. Watch all three of us scrambling to try and have a view on a company that we don't understand... All on this week’s show!

How PINS wins and Disney's parks are back with a BANG!
Which company does Steve D own in the frog-boiling business? Find out in this week’s episode!
We open the show with a big reveal from Steve W! He’s found out whether he’s having a boy or a girl (he had a strong feeling it was going to be one of them). Look out of the big reveal--nobody told Paul, though.
After that, it’s onto Steve D’s game. Steve’s been looking for some giant companies that people haven’t heard of. Paul and Steve W take turns at guessing which has the bigger market cap out of some of the less-well known large cap operations. How big is Atlassian? What is ICBC? And who is China’s biggest beer brewing company? Paul and Steve W swing wildly at these questions as Steve D keeps score.
Next, it’s earnings time. Steve D kicks us off with Pinterest. Average users are down, but average revenue per user is up. Where’s the company going next? Steve offers his view. Along the way, we also talk about Meta’s earnings. There’s been a similar theme there and Steve W’s been buying this company. Lots to like about this company, in our view, and we’re planning on keeping a close eye on it.
Following on, it’s Disney. The day after Disney’s earnings, the share price jumped before settling back down a bit. Record revenues at the the theme parks in Q4 and strong growth in Disney+ subscribers pushed the company along strongly. Is it a buy now? Find out why Steve W’s unsure and what Paul’s thinking about the reopening trade. Also, keep your ears open for Steve D’s views on the airline space.
We finish up with a blaze through some quicker earnings. Steve W talks about Compass Minerals—the salt mining company that’s down after its earnings. Steve D’s had a busier week and catches us up on Doximity, which has had a strong quarter providing social networking services for medical professionals.

Huge week of earnings & Sony bites back!
What does Steve W think about the situation in the Ukraine? Find out in this week’s Playing FTSE Podcast!
In an exciting week in markets, we kick off with a game from Steve W. The man has a one-track mind for Tesla and is in awe of the sheer size of Elon Musk’s... company. So this week’s game involves Paul and Steve D trying to guess whether collections of other well-known companies together have a bigger market cap than Tesla. Is Tesla bigger than all our favourite REITs? Find out as we play!
There’s loads of interesting stories, too. After the game, we talk about Sony buying game developer Bungie, following on from Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Paul and Steve D talk about their gaming history and the relative strengths of each acquisition. Paul tells us why he’s playing arbitrage on ATVI ahead of the Microsoft deal and Steve W thinks about the valuation and whether or not this is a sign of panic from Sony.
The rest of our show is a huge, Huge, HUGE earnings rundown. The Steves have been watching the earnings reports this week closely and they’ve been paying attention to what you need to know about loads and loads of companies. If you’ve been taking your eye of the earnings ball or been focused on the big moves from Paypal, Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon, then the Steves have something to get you on track. Along the way, we have a deep dive into Paypal and Alphabet, where Steve D tells us about how Alphabet has overcome its enormous size to put up some big numbers and Paul tells us of his bewilderment at Paypal’s weak earnings. And yes—we talk about the stock split. Steve W’s not a fan.

Find out in this midweeker!

Netflix vs Tesla - Earnings Week!
How’s your been week? It’s been choppy in the markets lately, but find out how we’ve been doing in this week’s Playing FTSE Show!
Steve D’s got the game this week. Stocks, it turns out, don’t only go up. Steve D’s found some that have gone down pretty spectacularly. He also seems to have bought most of them at some point or another. In this week’s game, Steve W and Paul attempt to figure out how far down various stocks (mostly Steve D’s stocks) are over the last year. These games are tough — will Steve W get ANY of them right? Find out as we play “Yowch to date”. Also, don’t miss Paul’s update on TransMedics and Steve W’s philosophical conundrum.
Earnings season rolls along causing volatility in individual stocks. We have a look at a couple of our favourites after the last week or so. Tesla’s been catching Steve W’s eye with a handy beat on Q4 estimates. The stock’s trading lower now, though, on account of the fact that limitations to manufacturing mean that Tesla aren’t going to be launching any new models in 2022. Steve W leads us through the impact of this and considers the implications of Tesla’s market cap in terms of success, valuation, and productivity. Everyone has an opinion on Tesla, including the JP Morgan analyst who has a price target of $290 on the stock. Paul talks about Tesla’s margins and Steve D joins in with questions about Elon Musk and the new humanoid robot.
Last it’s Netflix, which had a fascinating earnings call. Steve D’s in this stock and has been having a close look at the earnings from this week. Subscriber growth is slowing a bit and the stock took a big hit after its earnings at the end of last week’s show and the stock dragged Amazon and Disney down with it. Steve D looks at the relationship between the three companies and discusses why he’s been buying alongside Bill Ackman. Steve W compares Netflix to the other fans structurally and Paul talks about the valuation on Netflix. We finish up with a bit of off-script live discussion of Apple and Robinhood. One did well, one did badly. See how we react in real time…

Earnings, Takeovers, Buyouts & A Hidden Gem on the FTSE 100
What REIT has Steve W been buying? Find out in this week’s Playing FTSE Podcast!
As is usually the case, we’ve got a game to start off with. This week it’s Steve W with a game about the FTSE 100. Paul and Steve D take turns at naming stocks in the FTSE 100. Smallest market cap wins. Nice and simple. Find out why there are 101 stocks in the FTSE 100 and find out what Paul looks like when he gives a good answer to a quiz question. Is Associated British Foods bigger than ITV?
Following our game, Steve W leads us through a quick whip through the recent US bank earnings. There were some winners, some losers, and one bank that wasn’t really either. Rising non-interest expense (wages) put pressure on JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, while Bank of America and Wells Fargo went flying high. Citigroup continues to be something of an unknown quantity. But we all have different ideas on which banks stand out to us. Find out which one’s catching Steve D’s eye, which one commands all of Paul’s attention, and which one Steve W is attracted to.
Next up, we have our say on the Microsoft/Activision deal. Steve D saw Microsoft raising capital a while ago now and has been quietly wondering what they were getting ready to make a move on. Paul has his say on Activision’s games roster and what Microsoft are getting for their money. Steve W points out the implications from an antitrust angle and the timing of Microsoft’s move with shares in Activision down significantly from this time a year ago.
UK news follows, with a discussion of Unilever’s attempt to acquire GSK’s consumer products business. During the week, news of Unilever’s attempt to buy GSK’s consumer products business as part of a pivot to sectors with more growth emerged. Steve W’s been looking at this story with some interest and has some thoughts about Unilever and its prospects.
Last is a big deep dive on a company that Steve D has his eye on. The London Stock Exchange Group sounds like a boring company. So why’s it been catching the eye of the show’s growth investor? Turns out there’s a lot more to LSEG than you might think at first. There’s an infrastructure company with an impenetrable-looking moat and a data business with software-style margins and capital requirements over the top of it. Steve and Steve talk about the stock, the business underneath it, and why it might be one of the best stocks for UK investors to have a look at.
