James Earl Carter (Part Two).

In Part One of our series, we discussed the persistent attempts on the right to draw parallels between the Carter and Biden administrations. We looked at the rise of James Earl Carter from humble beginnings on a farm, to the Naval Academy and into the governor’s office in Georgia. Each step of his early journey offers insight into the development of his worldview and governing style. In Part Two, we do a deep dive into the first half of the White House years to understand the challenges that faced the new administration, some significant early legislative wins and the undercurrent of trouble brewing on the horizon. The (Fake) Debt Ceiling Crisis: The GOP’s Dangerous Gamble.

The debt ceiling crisis is a completely manufactured, self-inflicted wound that only the GOP sees fit to weaponize when it suits them. Forget the fact that it has been raised 78 times since 1960, 49 of which were under a Republican president—the House Republicans are determined to derail Biden’s economic gains any way they can. Today’s Topical Cream breaks down the fallacy of the debate and puts our budget in context with our debt. Visit the episode's accompanying site page. James Earl Carter (Part One).

Today we begin our look back at the brief but remarkable tenure of President Jimmy Carter. The late 70s is a fascinating period on a number of levels. Civil Rights groups had fractured into several pieces, the Vietnam era had come to a disgraceful close and the economy was beginning to falter after more than two decades of astounding post-war growth for the middle class in particular. The GOP’s grip on Washington was tenuous after Nixon’s resignation and the country wasn’t sure whether Ford was up to the task. For their part, Democrats were still healing from the ‘68 Convention and being sidelined by Nixon’s GOP. Out of the fog came a slow talking southern boy named Jimmy who shocked the world and secured the Democratic nomination for president. This is his origin story. Chapters Intro: 00:02:04 Chapter One: The Origin Story. 00:08:18 Chapter Two: A Good Old Boy Bids for the White House. 00:14:29 Post Show Musings: 00:23:22 Outro: 00:30:06 Resources Office of the Historian, Foreign Service Institute: The Panama Canal and the Torrijos-Carter Treaties  The New York Times: Jimmy Carter’s Unheralded Legacy  The Atlantic: The Passionless Presidency Vox: The Republican myth of Ronald Reagan and the Iran hostages, debunked  Politico: The Humiliating Handshake and the Near-Fistfight that Broke the Democratic Party  Brookings: Today’s global economy is eerily similar to the 1970s, but governments can still escape a stagflation episode Book Love Kai Bird: The Outlier: The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter David Rockefeller: Memoirs -- If you like the pod version of #UNFTR, make sure to check out the video version on YouTube where Max shows his beautiful face! www.youtube.com/@UNFTR Please leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts: unftr.com/rate and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at @UNFTRpod. Big Tech Layoffs: The Madness of Capitalism.

GDP growth was stronger than expected. Unemployment remains historically low. Supply chain issues continue to work themselves out. China is entering a period of strong projected growth. The Fed has even signaled that it will slow the pace of interest rate increases. And yet, the tech sector is laying people off like you read about? What’s behind the doom and gloom in Silicon Valley and some areas on Wall Street? We look into the recent spate of mass layoffs and try to square the tech industry narrative with real economic facts on the ground. Airline Crisis: Why Is the FAA Failing Under Buttigieg?

Pete Buttigieg is in the news a lot for a Transportation Secretary. Either he’s a media darling the democratic establishment is keen to keep in the public eye, or he’s really bad at his job. Methinks it’s both. Today’s Topical Cream examines Mayor Pete’s borderline catastrophic run as head of the agency and the fallout from the multiple airline crises that have plagued his tenure. Who To Trust in Media.

We’re gearing up and doubling down in 2023. Today, Max makes a couple of big announcements (big to us, at least) before musing on the state of the media. The balance of the show is dedicated to highlighting other great work that we admire and follow. We are all the sum of our experiences. These experiences help cultivate our individual biases. As consumers of UNFTR—and in light of one of our announcements—we thought it appropriate to reveal the media sources we trust. We’re anxious to hear your thoughts as well, so let us know who you rely on for political news and information.  Chapters Sketch: 00:00:05 Intro: 00:03:35 Post Show Musings: 00:36:18 Resources Pew Research Center: News Platform Fact Sheet Pew Research Center: Measuring News Consumption in a Digital Era Chartable: Apple Podcasts — United States of America — News Slate: The New Nightmare Scenario for the Media Naomi Klein Cornel West Yanis Varoufakis Jeff Sharlet The Jacobin Mother Jones The New York Times The Marshall Project Al Jazeera Murtaza Hussain Peter Maass Laura Flynn Jeremy Scahill Ryan Grim Abby Martin Spencer Ackerman Laura Flanders David Sirota Thom Hartmann Amy Goodman Christiane Amanpour Throughline Sam Seder David Pakman Jennifer Briney Congressional Dish Brad Onishi Dan Miller Straight White American Jesus Danny Bessner Derek Davison American Prestige Richard Wolff Economic Update Nick Hanauer Pitchfork Economics David McWilliams Chapo Trap House Bitchuation Room Francesca Fiorentini Best of the Left -- If you like #UNFTR, please leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts: unftr.com/rate and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at @UNFTRpod. Public Education: Parts One, Two, and Three.

Public education is a universal part of the American experience. Every one of us interacts with our system of education whether directly or through taxation. Since the nation's founding, a commitment to universal education has been a pillar of our society. More recently, however, public education has come under attack from several places. Some of the criticism is fair. But some of the sharpest attacks have been coordinated by far right extremists determined to break the system and replace it with private enterprises, faith-based curriculums or even...nothing. This episode combines our previous three-part series into one thorough, albeit incomplete, history of public education and the challenges it faces.
