Capitalize on Nonprofit Board Membership and Strengthen Your Resume

This week, I complete my presentation explaining how to capitalize on nonprofit board membership. There are 5 domains that cover most of those skills. Financial Management Data Management Business Management Leadership Talent Management I described each of them in Episode #254. In this episode, I explain how I used my volunteer experiences to obtain such skills beyond those developed during my medical training and clinical practice. For each, I describe specific experiences you can acquire while volunteering for a nonprofit. These skills are developed by actively participating in the following: Board of Directors Board Committees Non-board Committees And in each case, the best new skills can be obtained by serving as chair of the board, or committee. How Nonprofit Board Membership Can Be the Key to Leadership Experience

This week we return to a leadership and management topic. One challenge that must be faced when pursuing a nonclinical job, especially if it is a leadership or executive position, is demonstrating that you have the skills needed to be successful in that role. So, we start with that end in mind. Where do we get those skills, if they aren't picked up in medical school or residency? Several places • Pre-medical school experiences • Post-residency experiences • By developing them doing clinical work – so-called transferable skills. What are the 5 areas that I'm talking about today? 1. Financial Management Skills 2. Data Management Skills 3. Business Management Skills 4. Leadership Skills 5. Talent Management Skills Volunteering on a nonprofit board can provide many of those experiences. In Part 1 of this 2-part series, we begin by describing the 5 major domains of management skills that physicians often lack, with examples of each one. Next week in Part 2, we will learn how to gain experience and learn those skills doing nonprofit board and committee work. Are Career Ambitions Beyond Conventional Practice Within Reach

In 2014, Dr. Abeyna Bubbers-Jones was an NHS Urology Specialist Trainee working in Blackburn (in northern England). Having graduated from medicine at the age of 22 at Nottingham, she worked for several years as a surgical trainee in the NHS. But she was yearning for something more. She moved to South Africa and worked as a trauma surgeon for nearly 2 years, revitalizing her love of medicine and realizing that a new challenge had helped her to gain the real satisfaction she needed to develop as a professional and individual. She returned to the UK where she noticed that many doctors were experiencing similar issues she had faced. They were stressed and burned out, feeling doubtful about their careers with low self-worth, and considering leaving the profession. That led Abeyna to create Medic Footprints with her school friend Sara Sabin. It was designed as a community and network for doctors exploring alternative careers and support. Medic Footprints now helps doctors around the world overcome burnout and learn how to apply their passion and expertise in new ways. In this week's interview, Dr. Bubbers-Jones tells her story and describes the satisfaction she experiences helping her colleagues.
