By listener request, Jason is continuing to branch out into the wider world of hobby gaming. Ken Pickering and Garett Kopczynski from Reverie Studios stop by the show to chat about an upcoming, super awesome Live Action Role Play (LARP) they are organizing called Saturnalia. This is based on an ancient cultural festival involving, among other things, vampires! Players will be walking around the streets of New Orleans for a weekend, getting into adventures and celebrating collaborative storytelling. Ken and Garett share their experiences designing and executing this LARP. This conversation focuses on how to construct an experience for maximum collaborative fun. They discuss game mechanisms to foster trust and insure consent. They also have some thoughts about how to deal with "alpha players", which is something cooperative board gamers know quite well! We discuss the meaning of a historical game, what they are and what they are not, and how games get it wrong. In essence, history games should present counterfactuals. They should allow us to imagine and game out different ways that history could have gone.
