The Future of University... Or not? | Geoff Norcott

Geoff Norcott is one of Britain's favourite comedians. He's also one of those rarest of things, a right-wing comedian. Before his comedy career, he was a teacher, and during his time as a teacher in the 90s and noughties, he encouraged lots of his students to go to university. Now though, with fees much higher and satisfaction levels at university at an all-time low. He's wondering whether it's really the case that his son should go to university. So he's embarked on a documentary for the BBC saying, is university really worth it? It's a great watch and Jeff came on Jimmy's Jobs of the Future to chat about what he thinks the future of university and the workplace is. The Future of Timpson

Timpson is one of the most recognizable brands in the whole of the United Kingdom. With 2, 000 stores they have a presence on every single high street. They employ 6, 000 people and what you might not realize is 10 percent of those are prison leavers. It's a remarkable statistic and James explains to us how they actually teach people how best to rob them.Timpsons was started in 1865 by shoemaker William Timpson and his brother-in-law, Walter Joyce, in Manchester. To give you an idea of the legacy Timpson has in the UK, it was listed on the Stock Exchange in 1929. 150 years on, it has over 2,000 shops across the UK with brands including Johnson's The Cleaners, Snappy Snaps, Jeeves of Belgravia, The Watch Lab and Flock Inns.Today I'll be talking to James Timpson, in one of their flagship stores and chatting a bit about his new book, The Happy Index, which looks at upside-down management. We speak about the rules of success of a business that has seen itself go through two world wars, a pandemic, and the changing nature of the high street to create one of the most endearing brands in the United Kingdom. LIVE | the Future of Liz Truss | Harry Cole & James Heale

Welcome to this special episode of Jimmy's Jobs of the Future. It was recorded in front of a live audience. The guests were Harry Cole, the political editor of The Sun, and James Heale, the political correspondent of The Spectator. They are perhaps most famous for having written the book Liz Truss - Out of the Blue. It became so wildly popular that it became a meme in the year that she became Prime Minister. We spoke to them about what it was like writing the book and how the job of being a political journalist is changing in such a fast-moving environment. Politics and business at times can be very serious, the whole point of these evenings is that they are a bit more light-hearted. We kick off with a bit of comedy from yours truly at the beginning, but it's also mixed in with some searing insight into how our politics and media are changing. The Future of neurodiversity

Longtime followers of Jimmy's Jobs of the Future may have picked up on the fact that I'm dyslexic, a detail that becomes even more evident if you've perused my substack. While some people label dyslexia as a business superpower, as Richard Branson has done, it's perhaps easier to declare such sentiments when you're worth several hundred million quid and own your private island.Growing up and especially in the early stages of my career, I didn't always perceive dyslexia as a superpower. However, over time, things have changed for the better. Our understanding of dyslexia and various forms of neurodiversity has significantly advanced. Much credit for this progress goes to our guest today, Dan Harris, who has served as a director at Deloitte for an impressive 22 years.Three years ago, Dan initiated the Neurodiversity in Business global charity, dedicated to supporting neurodivergent professionals and fostering a more inclusive and comprehensive understanding of neurodiversity in the workplace. In this episode, we delve into the valuable contributions neurodiverse individuals bring to the table.Having dealt with the challenges of integrating such individuals into crucial sectors like government communications headquarters during my time in government, I recognize the significance of tapping into the unique brain power they possess.Follow us on socials!YoutubeInstagramTiktokTwitter / XLinkedinWant to come on the show?Get in touchSponsor the show or Partner with us:Get in touch Learn more about your ad choices.
