Scott Sunderland on the Circuit of Success
In 2001, Scott Sunderland found himself lying in a hospital bed, unable to move any part of his body. In just three days, he had gone from a very capable, athletic man to being completely paralyzed with a mind full of fear. However, Scott believed he was greater than just his body, and he used that power throughout the next year to teach himself how to literally walk out of that room and into a new life. However, on July 27th, 2012, Scott’s world came crashing down once again while walking on a beach with his best friend and three children. The sand collapsed under their feet, throwing them into a current, fighting for their lives. Scott made it to shore only to watch his best friend, Brad, take his last breath before a wave washed over him and he was gone. This experience left Scott completely broken and searching. For the next five years, he yearned for Brad’s forgiveness, only to realize that it was his own that he was searching for. Scott made a promise to live an inspired life for both Brad and himself. Scott left a life that wasn’t serving him and stepped into the power that he realized he always was. Today, Scott has kept his promise and tells his stories as triumphs. Teaching others that all their limitations, failures, sicknesses, losses, and addictions are just there to show them the door to their own greatness. Scott strives to inspire, motivate, and empower people and help them realize they are the victor just waiting to be uncovered.

Tom & Jen Satterly on the Circuit of Success
Join Brett Gilliland and Tom & Jen Satterly for a great conversation about battling through tough times.
Coping with physical, mental, and emotional pain on a daily basis created challenges and stresses that almost buried them both. From that success came the determination to help others who struggle learn to dust off their hard won skills and apply them to living the best life possible, giving hope and purpose to the one next to them, and the next. Each one, teach one.
Bio:
Command Sgt. Major (ret.) Tom Satterly served in the Army for 25 years, 20 of those years were spent in the military’s most secretive and elite Special Operations unit, Delta Force. As an Operator and CSM, Tom fought in and lead countless high profile military missions including Operation Red Dawn (Saddam Hussein’s capture) and the Battle of Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down) which was the longest sustained firefight since Vietnam. That 18-hour firefight ended with Tom, along with several of his teammates, running the Mogadishu Mile to safety.
Although the physical, mental, and emotional toll of war had compounded over the years, Tom never faced his Post-Traumatic Stress symptoms and in 2013 he nearly ended his life. Had it not been a text from his now wife, Jen, he would have joined the 22 veterans who commit suicide every single day.
As Director of Film and Photography of an elite Special Operations training company, Jen embedded with Navy Seals, Green Berets, and Army Rangers in (RMTs) Realistic Military Training exercises sometimes for weeks at a time. During this time, she began to notice the same symptoms Tom was battling and began to ask questions. What was being done? Who is helping our warriors on the homefront heal? Who is helping the families with secondary PTS? She didn’t like the answers and became certified in health and wellness to better understand PTS and the body.
Tom and Jen decided something had to be done and the work they did together training and preparing warriors to fight overseas turned into a mission of helping warriors and their families fight the silent war and to heal from it on the homefront. The Satterly’s founded All Secure Foundation in August 2017 as a resource library for helping warriors and their families navigate the maze of treatments and modalities of healing from PTS. They have worked individually with hundreds of warriors and their families and soon became more than a referral website but also a provider of education, awareness, and programs for healing.
In 2019 ASF launched one of the only programs in the country for warrior couples to tackle PTS and Secondary PTS together with Emotionally Focused Therapy through their Special Operations Warrior Couples Retreat Workshops. The program was so successful that they filled all 6 of the retreat workshops in 2020 in a single day. With additional funding, more workshop retreats will be added (to donate to or sponsor a retreat, please visit our DONATE page).
In 2020, All Secure Foundation has also began working directly with Special Operation units and the FRG (Family Readiness Group) by providing PTS Resiliency training at bases across the United States. In addition to working with the DOD, Tom and Jen also speak across the country to provide awareness and education on PTS including Congress, the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs, The White House Communication Agency, USAA, Lockheed Martin, NAMI, and countless veteran organizations.

Mike Michalowicz on the Circuit of Success
Join Brett Gilliland and Mike Michalowicz as they talk about the entrepreneurial roller coaster and the things he learned from the marketing side. Mike did not aspire to become an entrepreneur someday. That changed after he had a few beers with a colleague and heard his story that sparked Mike’s interest in becoming an entrepreneur. In this episode, Mike shares his journey to entrepreneurship that eventually led him to become an author of seven books.
Sudden Realization
Becoming an entrepreneur did not cross Mike’s mind until he had a few drinks with a colleague and heard his lamenting about having to work for someone. Mike presumed his colleague’s boss to be the kind that sits on a chair in the back room counting money and smoking cigars. As someone working his ass off for a theater company at the moment, Mike got tired of pushing printers and selling, being the person running the little store. That was the moment he told himself that he should own a business. The following day, Mike started his business, a computer system integration similar to computer networks. At 23, he got married and had his first son. At the same time, Mike was starting a business for the first time in his life. He was clueless, and he struggled, but he thought it was a good thing. Fear was Mike’s great motivator because he has no option to fail and have to see the way through it. Despite that, Mike survived, and that was when he became passionate and loved entrepreneurship.
Dark Times
Mike was successful with his first business as it was acquired by private equity after eight years. His second business, involved with computer crime investigation, hit the jackpot because they were hired to do the defense analysis of Enron’s Nigerian Barge Trial for Kenneth Lay. That put their business on the map, their revenues jumped, and they started getting high-profile cases. It was then acquired by Robert Half International, a Fortune 500 company. Due to his success, Mike thought he got it all figured out, that he had the Midas touch. He decided to become an angel investor as his third business, but that was when things began to crumble. Mike invested in ten businesses that all failed. It resulted in him wiping out all the wealth he had earned, lost their house and their car. It was good that a neighbor who knew their situation made Mike and his family live in their place rent-free as they were heading to Europe. At that point, Mike found the silver lining in his situation that inspired him to be an author. He took all the things he knew about entrepreneurship and investigated what works and does not. Fast forward, Mike was able to bounce back from the dark and devoted his life to helping others on their way to becoming entrepreneurs. His goal: to eradicate entrepreneurial poverty.
About Mike Michalowicz:
Mike Michalowicz is the author of ‘Fix This Next,’ ‘Clockwork,’ ‘Profit First,’ ‘The Pumpkin Plan’ and ‘The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur.’ BusinessWeek called Toilet Paper Entrepreneur a business cult classic. His books have been translated into ten languages.
Mike is also the founder of Profit First Professionals. The Profit First Professional organization is designed to support accountants, bookkeepers, and other financial professionals to substantially differentiate themselves in the market – so they can dictate a premium for their services and attract more clients. How do they do it? By introducing a significant service differentiator – the tools and techniques to maximize the profitability of your clients. If you own a bookkeeping or accounting business, and you want to distinguish yourself from your competitors, consider applying to be a Profit First Professional.
Mike is a co-founder of Provendus Group, a business growth consultancy. He has founded, built, and sold two technology service-based companies. Mike’s second company, PG Lewis & Associates, was sold in a public transaction in 2006. His first company was acquired by private equity.

Tom Ackerman on the Circuit of Success
Join Brett Gilliland and Tom Ackerman as they talk about his hard work journey and struggle that ultimately led him to his success. Tom is the sports director at KMOX and the host of The Garage Happy Hour, but getting to where he is today did not happen overnight. His love for the craft, paired with his father’s encouragement, pushed him to live his dream in the sports entertainment industry. In this episode, Tom shares his story of reaching greater heights in order to be where he wants.
Childhood Dream
Tom loved listening to the radio and watching on the television whenever the St. Louis Cardinals have a game. What even fascinated him as a child were the broadcasters who report the facts and announce the scores. He loved the cadence of the radio broadcast and the excitement of the television broadcast. One of Tom’s favorite sportscasters was Jack Buck, who amazed him so much with the way he talks as if sitting with a friend and explaining the game in the best way possible. Having these influences made young Tom follow them and decide to himself that he will become a sportscaster in the future. He manifested the dream in his playtime – calling his games of throwing a tennis ball outside against a stack of railroad ties like Danny Cox pitching and hitting the strike zone. He even tried imitating the spiels of the sportscasters and even their voices. Tom believes that his love of the sport and the medium brought him to his current work, and he is happy that he gets to live his childhood dream.
Pursuing the Career
Having an interest in sports, Tom was able to experience playing a variety of them: basketball, baseball, football, and even golf. Yet, being a small kid in high school, playing was not working out for him, so he decided to make a change and see if he could get into the press box. He went straight up to the public address announcer and asked about the man’s job. That encounter allowed him to make the call for the freshmen games and eventually became the public address announcer for his remaining years in high school. That was only the start of his experience behind the microphone. Tom applied for a shift in a student radio FM station in college that did a little bit of sports content. During the second semester, he got an opportunity, starting from three in the morning up to six every Monday. As he moved up in college, he eventually got a better timeslot. Tom mustered enough courage to try applying to KMOX with some people to help him get to the door as a reference and land him an interview. Thankfully, he got accepted at KMOX, had his big break as a reporter, and worked there for almost half his life. Tom’s efforts paid off well. His passion and love for the career he chose were the driving force behind fulfilling it.
About Tom Ackerman:
Tom Ackerman is Sports Director at KMOX, overseeing a department that serves as the flagship station for the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Blues. He is also the lead sports anchor on KMOX’s “Total Information A.M.” and a host on the Cardinals Radio Network.
In 18 years at KMOX, Ackerman has worked as a host, play-by-play announcer, anchor, and reporter since beginning his career at the radio station in 1997. He’s interviewed the biggest names in sports, covering Super Bowls, World Series, All-Star Games, and Final Fours. He’s traveled throughout the NFL, launching his career in 1999 with his extensive coverage of the Rams’ Super Bowl title.
For the past decade, Ackerman has called college basketball play-by-play for the University of Missouri, the Missouri Valley Conference, and various national rivalry games, including Syracuse-Georgetown, Kansas-Kansas State, and North Carolina-N.C. State. He’s also handled play-by-play duties for the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Ackerman began his broadcasting career calling play-by-play for Indiana University basketball, football, and baseball for WIUS-AM in Bloomington (1993-1997). He recently served as the delegate for Indiana University president Michael McRobbie at the Saint Louis University Presidential Inauguration. A St. Louis native, Tom is a graduate of Indiana University and St. Louis Country Day School. He and his wife, Angie, live in St. Louis with their daughters, Erika and Audrey.
Outline of the Episode:
[07:05] Tom gives a little background of himself.

[18:13] Tom talks about his father, who gave him the motivation for his dream.
[20:51] Doing bold actions to make a statement without being too overly aggressive.
[23:36] Brett dives into Tom’s favorite stuff, making him pick among some choices.
[36:07] Tom’s advice to himself back then.

Daniel Hack on the Circuit of Success
When Daniel Hack’s father took his own life, Hack was at a crossroads: he could let his sorrow consume him, or he could use the tragedy as a catalyst for leading a more gratifying, authentic life. He chose the latter. That’s why he’s dedicating his life to the power of choice and to bring others up with him.
In order to help others live a life of fulfillment, he first had to look inward to make sure he was living a life authentic to himself. He had become who I thought others wanted me to be, seeking external validation looking to impress people with material things.
In light of this realization he decided to flip the script. He turned everything upside down; he sold his condo and moved into a van with his dog Jackson.
During this period of self-reflection, he heard something that would change the course of his life. It was a quote from Nick Santonastasso, a motivational speaker, athlete, and internet star who was born with no legs, an undeveloped right arm, and a left arm with one finger. Santonastasso said, “The world would be a better place if everyone lived life through a lens of gratitude.”
At that moment, an idea sparked within Hack. He decided to start a sunglasses company to serve as a vehicle to facilitate the gratitude mindset out into the world.
His movement brand, Gr@titude Lenses, pairs a quality product with a profound purpose: to encourage one billion people to join the fight for mental health.
The sunglasses serve as everyday reminders that, in any situation, our reality is determined by the lens through which we view life and that, just like the sunglasses, each of us is made by design and put here for a purpose. We have the choice to make it a great day. For every pair of sunglasses bought, Gr@titude gifts a pair to a family affected by suicide.
Daniel is the founder of the movement brand Gr@titude and invests in real estate across the country. He’s raised over $16 million for San Diego athletic teams and programs through an online platform called Snap Raise SD. He is a leader in Pathfinders, a business ministry helping people leave a life of external affirmation to create a pathway of success. You can usually find him playing beach volleyball or visiting the dog park with his pup Jackson!

Aurora Winter on the Circuit of Success
Join Brett Gilliland and Aurora Winter as they talk about how she realized her dream of becoming a writer and used it to help and inspire people to let their messages out to the world. Aurora believes that everyone has something to tell, yet they do not try due to negative thinking. Her passion for liberal arts pushed her to teach people the framework for effective communication, to turn words into wealth. In this episode, Aurora shares her knowledge with those who have something to say and gets them to start writing that book they always wanted to write.
Love for Words
Hooked by the works of C.S. Lewis, especially The Chronicles of Narnia series, Aurora, at nine years old, realized what she wanted to be – a writer. She was able to grasp how Lewis embedded a lot of values into his storytelling and made a difference in people’s lives that she dreamed of becoming as good of a writer herself as he is. With that, Aurora’s love for words and storytelling made her a writer, and she has worked for film and television production. Aside from writing screenplays, fiction, and non-fiction, Aurora also gives aid to leaders and entrepreneurs to pour the words out they desire to speak, whether in videos, TV, podcasts or by writing a book. She wants everyone to be aware that communication is a superpower everyone possesses; the only question is how to be effective.
The Neuroscience of Communication
To be able to convey the message effectively, Aurora says that one must have to understand the neuroscience of communication. She briefly explains that three stages need to get passed through for effective communication. First is the ancient reptilian brain that is looking for something quick to grasp, or in other words, a hook that will spark interest to the audience. It needs to answer the questions “why should you listen?” and “what’s in it for them?” that would be calling the shots for people to listen. Second is the midbrain, which Aurora refers to as the social status test. After getting the audience’s attention, one needs to keep them from paying attention, so Aurora says that having status gets people to keep listening. One example is by having a book, and so it builds up credibility. The last is the cerebral cortex, the high-functioning brain that processes information. Aurora says that to get the message across, both left and right hemispheres of the brain should be used, so creating a mix of storytelling and information ensures that. Mastering the neuroscience of communication makes a higher chance of communicating effectively and helps the speaker do it differently than the mainstream. Aurora also believes that if you have the right message and have the right opportunity to present your message to the right audience, it can dramatically shift your business, career, and opportunities.
About Aurora Winter:
Serial entrepreneur Aurora Winter demystifies the magnetic marketing messages needed to trigger success. A TV writer-producer, she uses her film-making background and neuroscience to help entrepreneurs get their messages out to the masses. The most effective communication integrates smarts, showmanship, and storytelling — think Hollywood meets Silicon Valley.
Leaders launch startups and movements by leveraging clear, concise, compelling words. Yet, many intelligent people sabotage their success because they fail to master communication skills. Failure can be avoided with the proper training. Aurora trains people to confidently share their memorable message, whether delivered as a pitch, talk, video, or book. A sought-after speaker and trainer, Aurora is frequently featured in the media, including ABC TV, CBS TV, KTLA TV, Success magazine, Elle magazine, and Oprah radio to name a few.
Outline of the Episode:
[01:39] How Aurora realized her dream of becoming a writer and how she is lucky to be living the dream.
[03:07] Aurora gives a rundown of what she does besides writing.
[05:34] The importance of teaching people the framework behind communication as told by Aurora.

Nelson Tressler on the Circuit of Success
Join Brett Gilliland and Nelson Tressler as they chat about how making choices can affect one’s life and keep motivation running. Nelson was once a victim of circumstances that kept his morale down, but because of his family’s support, he started to believe in himself and achieved what he thought he couldn’t. In this episode, Nelson relates the experience that eventually brought him to the doors of success.
A Matter of Belief
Nelson became the first person in their family to get a college degree, thanks to his grandmother’s faith in achieving such a feat. Her support made him believe in himself too, and things got better from that point in his life. Having someone see his potential kept Nelson’s motivation up. After college, he got into commercial real estate, became the number one salesperson worldwide several times for a top commercial real estate firm, and even found himself among the United States Air Force ranks. It was all thanks to Nelson’s and his grandmother’s belief that got him to where he is, despite the trials he faced during his childhood.
Tragedy was upon Nelson the moment he was born. He was conceived because of a police officer who sexually assaulted his mother, 15 at that time. His grandfather took revenge and got himself a life sentence in prison. Things even got worse when Nelson’s mother had an abusive alcoholic husband. He had four siblings, and as the eldest, Nelson skipped school to help his mother take care of them. With the accidental death of his stepfather and the failed suicide attempt of his mother, Nelson’s family split up, and he moved into his grandmother’s house. Things went differently there because he felt sheltered for the first time in his life. Fast forward to the present, and Nelson looks into the bright side and shares in his book “The Unlucky Sperm Club” how all these experiences made a significant impact on his success.
Motivation in an App
The life experiences that eventually brought him success led Nelson to establish IGOTSMARTER. This app focuses on goal achievement and aims to help people keep motivated in order to succeed. It is programmed to work on an individual’s goals using strategies that can increase the likelihood of achieving those goals. Some features in the app include daily morning and evening rituals, self-assessment exercises, and a task management alert system. The IGOTSMARTER app also teaches people to be accountable for themselves, stressing that their choices keep them a step closer to their success. Nelson’s objective with the app is simple: to change the world one person and one inspiring goal at a time.
About Nelson Tressler:
Nelson Tressler is the founder and CEO of IGOTSMARTER, a goal achievement program and app created to help people succeed in every aspect of life. Despite his unbelievably difficult beginnings, Nelson rose to become a top commercial real estate agent and investor, completing well over $1 billion in transactions. As a serial entrepreneur, he has successfully founded over ten businesses, including one of the largest privately help pet resort chains in the nation. Nelson’s first big goal was when he became the first person in his extended family to earn a college degree, receiving a BSBA in Finance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is a US Air Force Veteran. His current company IGOTSMARTER utilizes an app and goal program that increases goal achievement by 95%. The program is built on 15 philosophies Nelson has learned from his “murder to millions” personal journey. Currently living in Las Vegas, Nelson has been married for over 25 years and has three sons.
Outline of the Episode:
[01:32] The backstory of Nelson that inspired him to write his book.
[05:22] Moving in with his grandmother was the turning point for Nelson’s life.
[08:04] How his grandmother’s belief in him pushed Nelson to reach his dreams.
[11:37] Seeing your potential makes you achieve great things.
[13:32] Nelson breaks down to Brett how his app IGOTSMARTER works.
[17:14] Time is the most precious resource.
[19:32] Nelson shares the struggle he faced in his early married life.
[22:00] Nelson gives Brett some tips on how to continue doing when things get complicated.
[23:51] The huge risk Nelson took – investing in some children’s daycare centers.
[27:57] You choose to be where you are today.
[29:46] The features of the app which was based on Nelson’s life experiences.

Ryan Alford on the Circuit of Success
Join Brett Gilliland and Ryan Alford as they talk about how he started out working as a marketing executive and ended up establishing his own marketing company and podcast. While juggling his time between being a father to four boys and a CEO, Ryan makes sure he gets everything done by having a flexible schedule. In this episode, Ryan explains the importance of shifting to digital marketing and how small companies can get on the same page with the giants.
Effective Marketing for Everyone
The shift from analog to digital marketing created a platform for small businesses to compete with the big ones; the only question is how. Having a lot of experience as a marketing executive working with big brands, Ryan started his own company, Radical, to provide comprehensive marketing services to their clients and give them the edge. He points out how social media has changed the rules of the game in terms of marketing. Now, everyone can put their business out there without spending millions in marketing, instead of television and radio marketing which are the common platforms back in the day. Ryan’s company uses this advantage for their clients and helps their businesses thrive with big names.
Everyone can use social media like Facebook and Instagram as a marketing tool, but Ryan says that running a business also requires consistency. Having regular posts on these platforms helps build a personal brand, creates credibility for the company, and shows the client’s expertise in the field. It also keeps the audience reach growing because the goal is to be out there and be seen, and Ryan’s company works with their client to ensure that this goal is achieved.
Marketing Through Podcasting
Ryan has been a podcaster for ten years, and his own podcast, The Radcast, started alongside his company. With his podcast’s help, Ryan promoted Radical by having conversations with companies they want to collaborate with. It also became his strategy to create his network of connections – he invited people on The Radcast who could introduce him to prospective clients. He shares that if he cannot make his podcast guests his clients, he can still learn from their conversation, making him up to date with new concepts, businesses, and industries, and more equipped when meeting potential clients. Building Radical’s brand through The Radcast has been successful for Ryan as he says that one out of three clients who hired them for marketing services heard the podcast or were referred by someone listening to the podcast.
Ryan hit two birds with one stone because he built Radical’s and The Radcast’s brand simultaneously. While he promotes Radical, his podcast also gained more listeners, making it the fastest-growing marketing podcast in the country, which only took him almost three years. Now, he shares his success with his listeners through his content, guiding them to building their own brands.
About Ryan Alford:
Ryan Alford is a marketing executive with 20 years of experience who has worked with and guided brands like Verizon, Lexus, Samsung, Toyota, NFL, Firehouse Subs, and more.
He is the CEO and founder of Radical, a boutique full-service digital marketing agency in Greenville, South Carolina, built for skill, speed to market, and unmatched capability. Radical provides digital marketing, e-commerce development, Magento development, and other services related to marketing.
Ryan is also the host of The Radcast, a marketing and business podcast that features unique marketing perspectives and strategies from industry pioneers and entrepreneurs. His podcast gives practical advice and actionable guidance while also keeping subscribers updated with the latest news in marketing and e-commerce. Ryan has a passion for discovering and having conversations with brilliant minds that create radical results for their brands. The Radcast highlights the stories that drove their marketing and advertising success and then shares those stories with listeners.
Outline of the Episode:
[00:39] Ryan shares what he does on his podcast, The Radcast, and stresses the importance of execution to his work.
[02:29] Ryan gives his life background, from his hometown and family to his education and work experience, including some brands he collaborated with.
[05:26] Helping out small to medium companies with marketing is the main focus of Ryan’s company, Radical.
[07:11] Running a business takes a lot of time and consistency.
[08:51] Ryan explains how leveraging social media channels, especially LinkedIn, can be advantageous in building a personal brand for small B2B industries.
