The Overlap of Disordered Eating, Eating Disorders & IBS

There is a complex relationship between disordered eating, eating disorders and digestive disorders. It is important that these conversations happen in the GI space, and as health care providers we need to be cautious of how we are helping patients who are navigating care in this space, to prevent disordered eating patterns that can harm them further. In today's episode we have special guest Beth Rosen, a non diet registered dietitian specializing in GI nutrition and disordered eating. During our conversation Beth shares how her own experience with IBS inspired her to get into the field of GI and dietetics. She talks about how ED are actually a spectrum, how restrictive eating habits can present as digestive disorders or exacerbate them further and why seeking a community who understands you is the best way to support many patients who struggle with gut issues and diet. In this episode, we cover: Beth shares how she got into dietetics Working with patients who deal with ED and why it's a spectrum How ED patterns can present as a digestive disorder Tools and resources that can help Why diversifying your food intake doesn't help your gut overnight It's important to treat the ED first Shifting from the restrictive eating mindset due to GI issues What if you could develop skills to help manage IBS symptoms in only 10 minutes per day? Today's episode is sponsored by Mahana Therapeutics, who has made cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) more accessible through their app, Mahana IBS. This is a new app that offers evidence-based CBT to reduce the severity of IBS symptoms - until the end of June 2022 this is available at no-cost for eligible patients. Why Weight Loss Isn't Always The Solution

One aspect of IBS that isn't often talked about is weight gain and weight loss. In general, resources and support for weight management while dealing with IBS is about as non-existent as support for IBS in mainstream healthcare. That doesn't mean the help doesn't exist, it's just harder to find. However, today's guest is an expert in helping her clients approach healthcare from a weight-neutral perspective while dealing with a digestive disorder. In today's episode, I am talking to Shana Spence, a fellow registered dietician nutritionist based in New York. Shawna is passionate about spreading the word on food freedom, nondiet approaches, and Health at Every Size health care. During our conversation, Shana talks about how to advocate for higher quality healthcare for yourself, the issue with stigmatizing language around weight in healthcare, and what Health at Every Size Matters. In this episode, we cover: Shana shares more about her own journey to becoming a dietician Intersecting anti-diet work with State-regulated healthcare Stigmatizing language around weight and its impact on community healthcare What is Health at Every Size How to advocate for quality healthcare Navigating healthcare with a chronic illness Today's episode is sponsored by Seed. Their signature product, the DS-01™ Daily Synbiotic, is a combination of science-backed probiotic strains and prebiotics that work in synergy to promote healthy digestion, ease of bloating, glowing skin, and more. My name is Shana and I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist based in New York. I label myself as an "eat anything" dietitian. Life is already complicated, why restrict yourself? I wanted to create a platform for open discussion on nutrition and wellness topics considering all the information circulating around these days. Was I always interested in nutrition? No. In the not so long ago past I worked in the fashion industry and hated it. (Joke to myself: I got a B.S in Fashion Merchandising...get it?) I decided to make a change, go back to school and became involved in food policy and public health. Update: I love what I do and want to share as much as possible.
