When the word punishment is weaponized it can start to conjure up many different thoughts. The problem being that they are majority negative. Almost on a regular basis in these times, we find this to be occurring more frequently. In some cases, it’s almost a competition amongst the insane to see who can out perform the other group in their choice of weaponized words. Training advice from vets can often be a controversial topic of heated discussions within the training community. Some vets have been known to give great advice where others have made outrageous claims. Sounds like any other industry really, However, this is the industry that we’re all in as trainers. We rely on our vets to help us through health issues of all variations throughout the life of our pets. Our trusted vets are incredible people that are highly skilled and talented in their field. That field however, often does not include training. Where some vets have gone on to do behaviour and training as an additional skill and can validate their advice, most can not and they shouldn’t. We should have a close and symbiotic relationship with each other and refer to the appropriate profession based on the requirements. While writing this, it is important to note that the veterinarian profession has some of the highest suicide rates out there. Their jobs are highly stressful with some of the highest rates of abuse in any profession. If you have a great vet, promote them and also let them know you appreciate them. it’s nice to know you’re loved and appreciated. Embracing the path of Chaos sounds confronting. In this episode we talk about the types of language you use around your life. How you interact, how you coach, how you live your life. We also speak about how teaching and coaching starts to flow into states of chaos and how it’s best to be prepared for those times. In essence, you have to make friends with Chaos because even though that word can conjure up some powerful thoughts, feelings and beliefs, it’s around us. The Chinese refer to life as a relationship with Yin and the Yang. The relationship of control and chaos with each element possessing a small part of the other, while providing balance and harmony. Boyd Hooper is a name that has been mentioned on this Podcast and in many circles around Australia. Boyd was Glenn’s first coach in bite work training, which is where Boyd really made a name for himself from the very early 1990’s up. Many of the freedoms and liberties that we have still been able to enjoy in the Australian dog industry have largely been thanks to Boyd and the other industry Titans that stood in the way. Before many of the known groups reared their heads up to minimise access to training and tool use, Boyd was one who regularly stood fast in opposition and rebutted with prepared science and logical debate. In addition, Boyd was an early pioneer of established training for the Australian Dog community in both customer and trainer education platforms, providing training to many thousands over a 40 year period. The past, the present and the future. It sounds like something from the hauntings of Ebenezer Scrooge as it is reflective of the toils that many, even most of us dable in frequently. This episode started dabbling in the mechanics of shaping and chaining and then went on to complex skills. In the relationship of training and our relationship with our dogs, it’s not uncommon to be time travellers. What we mean by that is, we use the linear scope of time to think of what we would like to do, while remembering what we did and hope because of that we can do better in the moment. The juggling act of the sands of time should mean that we can make the best use of past and future possibilities to direct our present and not confuse the shit out of ourselves or our dogs. The minimum effective dose can be reference to many things. You may look at it and feel that the word, dose would mean medicine or vaccine. Given the turbulent times we are all in and how much news that’s all making it would almost seem like a no brainer. However in this context, the word dose is reflecting on amount. It was something that Pat mentioned during the episode recording which is how I, (Glenn) often come up with a name for each episode. During the edit, something either one of us says or something we have heard is the motivation behind the naming. It closely relates to the concept of, No more one more time, which is discussed alongside this heading to remind us how to all be far better at communicating with our dogs. The relationship between the decoy and handler is one that needs to be based in honesty, integrity, vulnerability and compassion. There is so much information both said and unsaid that is bouncing between 3 entities, the decoy, the handler and the dog. Then you have the audience who are watching and taking notes along the way. So what is it that makes this type of dog training such a high level of involvement? A decoy really relies on the attention to detail and instruction from a handler. In return, the handler has to trust and be ready to act on said instructions to ensure that the dog has a good experience and is learning the most accurate and relatable behaviour. This relationship is intense and rapidly changing and evolving which is why there are so many variables all colliding. A trainer without a dog is often a difficult position for some trainers. They may have lost the dog due to some unforeseen circumstance or may not have one at all. This conversation was the result of a trainer putting something up in our Facebook page, which in turn, got us thinking about the complexities. A world without tools is an objective to several groups and individuals in the dog training communities. Clearly we’re talking about the training tools that some trainers choose to use during the training process. These are tools recognised as electric or remote training collars, prong collars, correction or choke chains, martinagles, slip leads etc. To certain groups of dog trainers, many of these are the essentials, where some or all of them are selected over the training process and used in ethical educational outcomes. To others, they are a tormenting and diabolical to be considered at all. In Australia we sometimes refer to a ‘tool’ as an imbecile. So we have a training industry saying that suggests, “It’s not the training tool that causes the problems. It’s the tool on the end of the lead that does that”.
