In the early 1930’s, Stalin’s brutal policies to reign in the control of Ukraine resulted in the starvation and deaths of approximately 4 million people. The communist controlled the growing of crops, the distribution of crops, and the ability of Ukrainian farmers to feed themselves and their families. To further ensure that Ukrainian farmers did not leave their villages to seek food in the cities, the Soviet government started a system of internal passports, which were denied to farmers so they could not travel or obtain a train ticket without official permission. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were not just making a corporate or political decision to separate from the British: each man was signing a potential death sentence. By placing their names on the Declaration of Independence the Founders of America were stating that they would defy the tyrant King George for the sake of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We live in an age where what has been universally understood as beautiful is now derided as ugly and where we are told that we must embrace and celebrate the ugly as beautiful. The news that the informational data dam may have broken several weeks ago through Elon Musk’s purchase of the social media platform Twitter sent the world into a hyper-spin mode and into two entrenched camps: those who value free speech and the free flow of information and on the opposite side, those who believe in authoritarian restrictions and strict methods of informational control. To those who value free speech, the opportunity for truth to arise in an era of repressive tolerance would signal at least a glimmer of hope that constitutional norms may be restored in the United States of America. To those who wish to enforce authoritarian controls on the free flow of information, the announcement was viewed as a “step back” from the technocratic subjective goals of those that wish to engineer a totalitarian future. In the end, both views should be seen as less than sufficient if mankind is to follow a pathway of free inquiry that leads to an objective pathway of a “better life” for our nation. As history has taught us, we should not place our hopes on any one man to free us from the bonds of slavery; physical or mental.
