EP 94: PAUL WHATUIRA TALKS NRL FAME & FIGHTING HIS DEMONS

Paul Whatuira is best known as a hugely successful NRL Athlete, Kiwi player, 2 x Premiership winner. He has played for the Warriors, Melbourne, Storm, Parramatta Eels,  West Tigers, Huddersfield Gians.  But the high points of his athletic career were matched with lows in his personal life, his mental health. A victim of sexual abuse as a child, he realised he had really never dealt with the trauma and when his wife became pregnant with their first child it sent him into a tail spin that lead in  2009 to him being admitted to a psychiatric ward in England after attacking two men. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and heavily medicated, effectively ending his league career. Paul spent five years heavily medicated and trying to work through his problems but emerged a much stronger man for his experiences. In his own words Paul says:  "I had to rediscover myself, and build that self-confidence and that reconnection with family and people that are important to you, and having the awareness for living for today," explained the 16-test Kiwis player. "I genuinely believe that your strength is for living in the now and you have to forgive yourself from the past - you can't bring it back. You have to focus on today and be grateful for the things you have." "The healing for the things I went through was reconnection with my family, culture and being grateful what I have. EP:90 FROM UNHEALTHY, UNFIT SMOKER TO ULTRA MARATHON CONQUEROR -TANIA CAHILL'S STORY

This is the tale of a 49 year old Australian woman who in the space of few short years went from being a totally unfit, overweight smoker who didn't really even think about running or fitness to having a life defining moment at a doctors one day and changing her life. Losing a huge amount of weight, stopping smoking, starting walking and then running and then running further then running some more.   This is a story of an endurance adventure that ultimately challenged Tania both physically and mentally. Along with Robert, her partner who supported her as her one and only crew, she embarked on the mammoth task of running the 440km Hume and Hovell Track.      Beginning at Cooma Cottage in Yass, the track follows the trails discovered by explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in the south east of NSW, Australia.  It traverses both rugged and beautiful countryside while following a mix of public roads, fire trails, purpose built single track and over 100 footbridges and finishes at the Hovell Tree at Albury.     The track is without a doubt one of New South Wales’ best kept secrets.  After 18 months of planning, Tania realised her dream of completing the track when she finished the entire journey at the Hovell Tree in Albury at around 8:30pm on October 2. But this journey wasn't just a physical one but a journey to health and strength, to confidence and resilience and to much soul searching in the aftermath. Injuries to knees rate high as do calf problems achilles, plantar fasciitis and more so is there a more effective way to train. Why does it work when you are young doing this high mileage system but often lead to problems as the miles and years pile up and is there a better way.

Ep 84: How to build a team and lead them to success - in business, in sport or at home

In this podcast Lisa discusses how to develop a good team culture and how important your state of being, your values and your consistency is in helping the team achieve it's goals. She discusses why setting totally unrealistic goals just demotivates and teaches a team to fail.  Why goals should stretch and challenge a team but be doable.  She discusses the leaders emotional state and how influential this is on the team around them and how the culture in a company or a sports teams is always a reflection of the leadership.  If your team isn't performing, look to yourself first. She discusses the 5  different levels of being.  1. Being Present 2. On Alert 3. Loaded state - things are go pear shaped 4. Fight or flight state  5. Total overwhelm and full on panic. If you turn up in any level except level 1 your team will likely be on the next step up.  So reflect on how you are turning up.
