Human Hair & Sheep’s Wool: A Tale of Two Textiles
In today’s show, an introduction to the wool series, Betty and Trev respond to a podcast episode called ‘Wearing Hair’ from ‘Articles of Interest’ by Avery Trufelman. We discuss the concept of wearing human hair textiles as an alternative biomaterial as spearheaded by the Dutch company ‘Human Material Loop’ asking… is it vegan to wear human hair? We go on to unpack some of the inherent ethical issues with sheep’s wool as a material and critique the wool advocacy of author and knitting influencer, Clara Parkes. Riot Dogs: Protest dogs of the world with Betty and Meg
In 2008 during the Greek Austerity riots, a strange phenomena was born. Stray dogs began joining in the protests in Athens Greece against the IMF and their austerity measures directed toward every day citizens. These good boys and girls would voluntarily join protests and actively try to protect protesters against the police and their violence, siding always with the demonstrators. Photographers and videographers were the first to notice that the same dogs were turning up day after day, barking at the police, grabbing and running away with tear gas cannisters and otherwise trying to help their human comrades. They became known as the Riot Dogs.... And again in Chile during the 2011-2013 student protests, arguably of the most famous of the riot dogs, The Black Matapacos, joined the protests to protect his human comrades in the fight against oppressive neoliberal policies. From the actions of these brave dogs spawned an avalanche of songs, artwork, documentaries and even a game celebrating their inspiration and their lives. This is their story... Who Cares About Insects?
Why do we overlook insects so often? In this show we decided to focus on insects for a change. Our guest Alex Hill is doing his PhD research on human insect relationships. We discuss why people including animal advocates and vegans do not consider insects much at all. We have a short quiz on insects, we talk about the threat of insect extinction and look into the details about different species of insects.
