Possums in Aotearoa (NZ)

Listen back to this episode to hear what has happened ever since settlers brought the brushtail possum to Aotearoa (New Zealand). Our guest is Emily Major, a PhD Candidate at Canterbury University in Christchurch. A Multispecies Justice Approach: Creating a Just World for Animals and People

We speak with Dr Bill Lynn and Dr Fran Santiago-Avila about Multispecies Justice, an alternative approach to negotiating the complex relationships of coexistence between other animals and humans. Importantly, Multispecies Justice centres animal needs, as well as humans, when determining how to create a just world. Fran is the Big River Connectivity Science and Conservation Manager for Project Coyote and The Rewilding Institute. Find out more about the excellent work Project Coyote do by visiting their website - http://www.projectcoyote.org/.  You can find out more about Bill and Frans work by visiting PAN Works, an independent non-partisan think-tank dedicated to the wellbeing of animals which they are both part of.

Animal Voices

It is common for animal advocacy campaigns to describe animals as voiceless, and portray humans as speaking on their behalf. This is incorrect, animals DO have voices! Davita and Trev discuss the theory behind animal voices, with contributions from Nicole Beasley and Belinda Morris. We explore the links to other social justice issues, and why we should listen to and amplify animal voices with our advocacy. You'll get to hear the voices of many animals, including the rooster pictured in the podcast photo Tilt! Links: Baby Bats Babble Like Human Toddlers: https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2021-08-20/baby-bats-babble-like-human-infants/100381484 Carl Safina - Becoming Wild: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51122634-becoming-wild Eva Meijer - When Animals Speak: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44601448-when-animals-speak Joan Dunayer - Animal Equality: Language and Liberation: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/839265.Animal_Equality Hana Low of The Microsanctuary Movement: http://www.microsanctuarymovement.org/ An excerpt from Beasts of Burden, By Sunaura Taylor: https://thenewinquiry.com/on-ableism-and-animals-2/ Laura Jean McKay - Animals in that Country: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52527550-the-animals-in-that-country Music: TRH 'Loser Curse' Telenova 'Tranquilize' https://telenovamusic.bandcamp.com/album/tranquilize Mo'Ju 'Wave' https://open.spotify.com/album/2roZhR0fCZQbphZ0M7Ek01

The Plant Based Treaty with Greta Cuthell from Youth Climate Save VIC

We discuss the Plant Based Treaty with Greta Cuthell, organiser for Youth Climate Save VIC and why our food systems are inextricably linked to the climate crisis. Greta is an animal advocate and activist, ambassador for climate action and a vegan.  The Plant Based Treaty has been designed as a companion to the UNFCCC/Paris Agreement and is the first of its kind to put food systems at the heart of combating the climate crisis. The Treaty aims to halt the widespread degradation of critical ecosystems caused by animal agriculture, to promote a shift to more healthy, sustainable plant-based diets and to actively reverse damage done to planetary functions, ecosystem services and biodiversity. Read more here: https://plantbasedtreaty.org/  Youth Climate Save Victoria are on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/youthclimatesavevictoria/ We played the following songs on the show: Runaway by The National https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1z9AL3mJvcM  Float On by Modest Mouse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTAud5O7Qqk Capsicum by The Teethers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wk4UMNF0KWc  You can find music from Freedom of Species on our Spotify playlist here https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3TJQujKYjGFoFP6LhBbaTS?si=qKy5N4EcQXeShbrs_VaQdg&dl_branch=1 Freedom of Species t-shirts: All of the looser fit Freedom of Species shirts have now been sold but there are still fitted shirts available for the reduced price of only $15!
