In 1897, Belgian naval officer Adrien de Gerlache organized the first major expedition to Antarctica in half a century. It will kick off the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. They encounter hardships and scarcity of resources on their return journey, but manage to form a tentative coexistence with the Aboriginal people. John McDouall Stuart is remembered today for his lasting contributions and has landmarks and a town named after him.
