#6: Anna Hemmings MBE OLY
RQ - Lessons on Resilience - Anna Hemmings MBE Olympian Anna founded Beyond the Barriers Training Consultancy in 2009 at the end of a glittering sporting career, where she won 6 World titles in marathon kayak racing and competed at two Olympic Games. Anna saw a great opportunity to use her experience at the highest level of sport to inspire people and help them overcome their own barriers and fulfil their potential; with this mission in mind, Beyond the Barriers was born. Since transitioning from the world of elite sport into business Anna works globally as a training consultant, executive coach, a workshop facilitator and keynote speaker. She is adept at translating the lessons that she learned in sport into the business world and has developed a reputation for helping individuals and teams unlock potential by breaking down those barriers that may prevent change and improvement. She aims to help others build personal resilience, meet challenges head on and achieve results.I interviewed Anna Hemmings MBE, OLY who has done so much for the Inspiring Leadership Trust and the charity work of Leigh Bowman-Perks. Anna’s tale is one of triumph over adversity... After becoming a 3 time world champion she was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and told by medical experts she might never race again. But Anna battled her way to full recovery and between 2005 and 2007 she went on to win a hat-trick of three world titles in a row and compete at her second Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. Anna learnt some valuable lessons about resilience which she is passionate about sharing. Her top advice for building resilience: 1. Have a clear Goal to help you find a way forward despite the odds against you. 2. Build a strong support network – it’s a valuable source of resilience3. Balance stress and recovery – resilience is as much about how you recovery as it is about how you endure. Look out for: A feeling that you are working longer and harder just to keep up? You’re finding it difficult to switch off and relaxYou lose your temper at the smallest thing and find it difficult to manage your emotionsAnna said - you WILL face demands and stresses - so how do you recover and find balance?Like in sport you must spot when you empty your metaphorical tank. She knows from bitter experience that constant energy expenditure without rest and recovery leads to depletion of your health and wellbeing. It is key that you spend and recover energy. The maximum is 90-minute periods of focus with short recovery and focussed breathing in between. Disconnect from the phone for a few minutes. Find strategies to get back your energy - the compound effect will be phenomenal. #InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #purpose #Inspiringleadershiptrust #Annahemmings Hosted on Acast. #4: Values Led Leadership: Philippa Snare - EMEA Head of Global Business Marketing, Facebook
Before Philippa Snare joined Facebook as director of business marketing for EMEA, her role was all about the three Ps – people, purpose and positivity. Philippa ran all of Microsoft’s centralised marketing services, which includes its owned and operated websites, marketing communications, CRM programmes, social media and relationships with external digital agencies. Her business and consumer experience led to her becoming CMO in 2011. She joined Microsoft in 2000 and is a qualified web developer.Philippa has worked in the internet industry for over 25 years and is a qualified web developer and MBA Graduate. She began at Scoot, building a dotcom business growing £100M in Classified Ads and then Yell as Business Development focusing on distribution with multi-national and global partners. In 2000, Philippa joined Microsoft in MSN and grew online Services by 300% in advertising revenue; she has subsequently lead PR, built a Modern Marketing organisation, driving strategic initiatives for Microsoft in the UK. In Facebook she continues her passion in building extraordinary future digital marketing impact demonstrating thought leadership and driving positive change. In her spare time, Philippa is passionate about horse riding, diving and travelling, she occasionally plays Polo.Great leadership track record as CMO Microsoft & Global Role in Facebook. People know Philippa as Inspirational - she cares deeply about people, nature, leadership & learning. She especially values time in nature - which she finds gives her energy. When I worked with Philippa as her coach I was impressed by all she does for others and for our planet - from personally cleaning up the sea bed to coaching vulnerable girls. She has worked for remarkable Leaders - eg Duncan McKillop technical leader at Scoot who is very values led. Judy Gibbons MSN she found was exceptional at getting ownership and working together on a mission using people’s skills & strengths. Sarah Personette in Facebook stood out for her too as a vibrant energy giver. Also very respectful of coach Mike Pegg Philippa cares deeply and willing contributes to society via the Inspiring Leadership Trust charity for vulnerable girls set up by Leigh Bowman-Perks. Also Blue Marine foundation & Prince's Trust International. she got great energy from involving her team designing campaigns reducing knife crime. When discussing learning from mistakes and faults, we had a great chat. Some senior leaders don’t like too much openness or honesty. She's often got herself in trouble for “being unconventional” by being very blunt and not mincing words. However - they know where you are. the downside is leaders with a fixed rather than growth mindset feel threatened or exposed. I have been working on "Toning down" that frankness. Top tip - lead with your personal values and if they are continually compromised, then you have to make a decision. #InspiringLeadership#leadership #marketingacademy #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #resilience #Boards Hosted on Acast. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for distinguished services in Afghanistan in 2015.Paul is a talented and deep thinking officer who I met on his Coaching Programme at Henley Business school.Paul has made the art and practice of leadership his profession and calling. When I asked Paul what "Leadership" means he focussed on the Fundamentals.3 things he believes strongly make good leaders: 1. Develop and forge strong teams to work together 2. Problem Solving - learn how to tackle complex decisions and empower those you lead3.Serve to Lead - lead by example and put your people before yourself.Leaders take “Extreme Ownership” of what happens. Too often in society and Politics people in leadership positions rarely take accountability for the impact of their decisions or poor behaviour.Paul Spoke of the crucial military philosophy of "Mission Command". Also to understand the key issues for your leader and that he can clearly encapsulate: "Commander’s Intent". Disciplined initiative is required by leaders to exploit fleeting opportunities.Put Stress the importance of delegation and empowerment so that decision-making is given to the leader at the point where the information is. Too often in business it is given to the person with the most senior role - who doesn't necessarily know what is going on.It is the responsibility of Leader to retain ultimate accountability - even if you give authority to others to act. He spoke of Good leaders vs Selfish individuals.Special qualities of British Army Officers - these are even more highly relevant to Business Employers today than ever before.Especially Reserve officers. These qualities are: Leadership development, decision making, problem solving, generating high performance teams & leading teams. We both Discussed the Executive Coaching skills of Army officers. I know that Paul is a experienced and high calibre executive coach himself and feels that these skills are crucial for army officers to develop and employ with all those the lead and influenceArmy leadership is very different from the traditional stereotypes people criticise. Less tell - more encouraging of greater self-awareness, to recognise blind spots, seek 360 Feedback, have coaches. In a recent survey of soldiers - they want more coaching & mentoring from their NCOs and Officers.. Tips – remember the basics - be yourself, never stop learning - it's a lifetime journey#InspiringLeadership #leadership #courage #CEOs #MotivalionalSpeaker #teamcoach #resilience #Boards Hosted on Acast. Tips - Work out what works for yourself. “Leave your ego at home”. Alison says - I’m not your archetypal leader; more of a team coach leading in a thoughtful way.Im definitely not loud & directive - not “the big I am!” She has found that what works best for her is- "Set the strategy, then work to empower your team to deliver"."Hire really good people and let them have their wings and fly." As a recovering perfectionist it’s quite scary to let go. However, When you do then that’s when the magic happens. She learnt that style from others and passed it on. "You get the greatest sense of achievement when you see others succeed". Particular she found it very important "Getting from the engine room to steering the ship from the bridge. There you can be looking out for icebergs"."Hire and develop the very best and surround yourself with an army of giants". Trust is a really important - both ways. Consistency. Learning from mistakes. Fear of failure & trusting your own judgement. Her main regrets - is making bad hires.Crucial to tackle White Collar Psychopaths & stop any culture of bullying. Top Tip – inspired in the rebuilding of Manchester by Sir Howard Bernstein. He created “the Power of Purpose” – So inspiring working for him and coming to work "on purpose"#InspiringLeadership #leadership #marketingacademy #CEOs #MotivalionalSpeaker #teamcoach #resilience #Board Hosted on Acast.
