#43: Matt Oppenheimer - CEO Remitly

Matt is the Co-founder & CEO of Remitly, the largest independent digital money transmitter in the US, whose vision is to transform the lives of immigrants and their families by providing the most trusted financial services on the planet. Matt’s passions an d leadership have been influenced by the environment he was raised in. Generations of his family, including his father, have been entrepreneurs. His mother, an art therapist, role modelled introspection and emotional intelligence. After graduating from Dartmouth with a BA in psychology, and receiving his MBA from Harvard Business School, Matt eventually took an opportunity with Barclays Bank in Kenya. There, the inspiration for Remitly was born. Matt saw first-hand the difficulty of sending money overseas and recognised the global impact his business could have. Since launching Remitly in 2011, he has drawn from the influences of his family and experiences to lead a high-performing team. For Matt, foundational elements to effective leadership are leaning into your strengths, awareness of your weaknesses, self-care, and investing in your team. He lives by the motto that “it will all work out." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

#42: Alex Chisnall - Founder of Screw It, Just Do It Podcast Agency - Inspiring the next generation of Podcasters

As Steve Jobs says, you can only join the dots when you look back.I started straight from University as a trainee journalist at BBC Radio Wales interviewing everyone from heavyweight champion of the world Lennox Lewis, to leader of the opposition Neil Kinnock. I now feel life's come full circle as I'm back in the audio space, helping leading brands & entrepreneurs tell their stories through the power of podcasting. In between I'd had my head turned & left to see the world with Virgin Atlantic Airways. Then Inspired by my boss, Sir Richard Branson, I left Virgin to set up my own business.I'm now the founder of the Screw It, Just Do It podcast agency. From initially launching my own show and receiving two downloads, to last year getting a #1 rated business show from the UK to Uganda and downloaded in 140+ countries, I passionately believe that everybody deserves to be heard & everybody should have their own voice. Podcasting is a great enabler in this regard. More than anything, it has been about the people I have met. Great leaders of hugely successful businesses such as Innocent's Richard Reed, Ted Baker's Ray Kelvin CBE, Not On The High Street's Holly Tucker MBE. People I would have never got to have met without my podcast, and who have grown my network immeasurably. In hindsight, I wish I'd asked Richard more questions as we used to see a lot of him in the early days of the airline. When I re-joined Virgin, in the guise of his not-for-profit Virgin StartUp, helping entrepreneurs get funding & mentoring, he was living on Necker Island! My biggest takeaways when it comes to leadership was seeing how well he recruited people who had skills he didn't. How he empowered them by giving them autonomy, by delegating, and by creating an incredibly positive company culture.I am also an advisor for global startup-generator and VC, Antler.co, whilst I also chair the Accelerate Event Series for British American Business - the US Chamber of Commerce in the UK. In 2011 he gained an MSc in Major Programme Management from Said Business School, University of Oxford, where he is now an Associate Fellow.  Nick left the British Army in 2005 having served a full career in the Infantry and as a staff officer principally in operations and planning. #40: Mark Pollack - Owner & co-founder Aston Chase. Leader and philanthropist.

Mark shares very personal stories - both of learning from family financial hardships and from beginning at the bottom of an organisation and working his way up. He earnt from other’s success and financial wealth and from working his way to becoming an entrepreneur and owner of his own business. Aston Chase is a boutique property business - finding beautiful properties at the top end of the market, then selling, buying and letting them. He shared his lessons from how as entrepreneurs you can overstretch yourself and how you need to have a nose for realising when you’ve got something wrong. He’s a great believer in giving back to society and has raised millions for charities and very deserving causes making use of the kindness of his friends and contacts who also want to make a difference for those less fortunate than themselves. He is a great believer in constantly developing your team and yourself as leaders and as people. As part of his charitable fundraising he is an enthusiastic cyclist and has thrown himself at some of the biggest challenges in the cycling world to raise money for others less fortunate than himself. Family and friends pay a very big part in his life and he is very proud of all that they have achieved too.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast. Don’t let landmines get in your way. Understanding influence is vital if you want to succeed in business, how decisions are really made in your organisation, in and out of meetings, so work on how you influence and how others are influenced around you. And finally understand the boardroom early on in life and consider a community board because it will give you an opportunity to truly enhance your leadership and strategic skills. #InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast. #38: Lt General Robert Baxter CBE - Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Health)

Robert has had the pleasure and privilege of over 40 years’ service in the Regular and Reserve Armed Forces of the UK leading young men and women in organisations from around 30 strong to over 10,000. Leadership approaches have varied from the ‘follow me’, through traditional hierarchical command and control to rather more nuanced approaches of ‘nudge’ and influence. The opportunity to observe the approach to leadership of much more senior people at close quarters has proved invaluable. He has no time for those who rant, lack humour and do not possess a thirst to improve their professional competence – no affected dilettantes. His key observation is that leadership is not something that is ‘done’ by one person to a group but rather a complex ecosystem of context, the leader, the led and the mission: John Adair would have recognised this. The prize goes to the leader who is acutely aware and has the flexibility of mind to adjust. This is well described in Stan McChrystal’s latest book, Leaders, Myth and Reality, with some fascinating case studies.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast. #37: Annette Barnes - Former CEO LBG Private Bank

I always wanted to be a physiotherapist, to help others. Arthritis in my back stopped that, so whilst taking a ‘year out’, I trained as an IT Systems Programmer. I progressed into broader IT roles, then moved to a new credit card company, MBNA Europe. I took every opportunity presented (IT, Contact centres, Underwriting etc). When I left MBNA 16 years later, I was on the main Board and we were the largest issuer in Europe. I moved to Lloyds Banking Group and undertook a variety of leadership roles: Supporting 14,000 colleagues in Customer Operations, overseeing Bank of Scotland (Retail Bank) and, as CEO of Lloyds Bank Private Banking Ltd, leading a talented team of Wealth Advisors.I chose to conclude my executive career in 2018 to progress a portfolio of Non-Executive roles. I currently work with 3 organisations (Old Mutual Wealth Ltd, Leeds Building Society and GlobalData plc).Genuine people that lead with integrity inspire me. My key leadership tips would be: 1) Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right 2) Take every opportunity 3) Learn how to let go and stop ‘doing’.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast.
