#86: Kate Oliver – Motorcycling Tour Guide in the Himalayas
Kate Oliver is a motorcycle tour leader and leads tours in the High Himalaya in India, Sikkim and Nepal. She is also a qualified stone mason, a poet, writer and a member of Kellogg College Oxford Alumni where she studied for her Masters in Creative Writing and critical practice. Although she has received no formal leadership training she has been required to show inspirational leadership to take her customers on two week tours in the Himalaya on Royal Enfield Motorcycles where altitudes of up to 18 000 feet, meltwater crossings, rock falls and landslides are the norm. Coupled with altitude sickness, egos and ad hoc teams of strong willed but sometimes low skilled riders, she has learnt to be empathetic to enable her customers to put their egos aside, express their fears and overcome the considerable challenges they encounter. She is not inspired by any one person in particular and is wary of perpetuating the myths surrounding some of the ‘great’ leaders. Her leadership abilities have come from a variety of people she has encountered and of course by solving the people-problems she regularly faces on adventure motorcycle tours.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast. #85: Chuka Umunna - Board Advisor and Former Members of Parliament
Chuka has had a varied career which has involved being a public figure for much of the last 10 years. The common thread running through his two-decade career, first in corporate law, then in public policy, and now back in business has been desire to build a better and more responsible capitalism in which all citizens have stake. The son of an entrepreneur, from a mixed heritage family, he has observed how he would not have had the opportunities he had were it not for the power of enterprise. Not afraid to try new enterprises in politics and to challenge group think and tribalism, he was one of a number of MPs who left the main parties to set up the new party, Change UK. He switched to the Liberal Democrats before leaving politics. For any organisation to thrive, Chuka believes internal challenge is vital, as is an understanding that success is not all about any one individual but a group. But any group needs a leader to lead and bring decisions to a head.Top Tip - Draw up a strategy – which will always evolve - and then focus laser like on the tactical execution of it, whilst having a ‘Plan B’ if ‘Plan A’ doesn’t work out.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards Hosted on Acast.
