#310 Aging & Thriving in Place - Jed Miles
Aging & Thriving in Place - Jed Miles The Not Old Better Show, Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #310. Today's show is sponsored by SnugSafe.com It's time to elevate the conversation about aging in place. Forget about grab bars and wheelchair ramps. Those are elements of last resort for "old" people. And who wants to be labeled "old"? Certainly none of us in The Not Old Better Show audience. The problem with aging is that there isn't a single point at which we are officially "old." All other major life events—graduating from college and starting a career, for instance, or getting married and starting a family—have a clear starting point. Not aging. It's not only gradual, but also different for each of us individually. Long before our hips fail us, we might be a little shaky on our feet. Years before we need memory care, we could become unsure of our decisions or forgetful. Aging is relative. Some people are born "old." Others are young into their nineties. Yet despite all of these vagaries, we do know several things for sure: America has an aging population with an increasing life expectancy, most of whom desire to stay in their homes indefinitely as they age. In fact, already 118.7 million strong, the population of Americans age 50 and older is expected to swell by another 10 million—nearly 10 percent—by 2020, just over a year away, according to AARP. The number of Americans age 85 and older, meanwhile, is expected to more than triple by 2060, making them the fastest-growing age group in the country. Americans aren't merely aging, however; they're also living longer, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, which says a baby born in 2016 will live to an average age of 79.9 while one born in 2060 will live to an average age of 85.63. Someone born in 1950, on the other hand, has an average life expectancy of just 68.4 My guest today on The Not Old Better Show, Jed Miles. Jed Miles is the National Sales Manager for Stander. Stander is all about being independent as we age. Jed Miles is here to help us sort through some of the numbers, some of vagaries, the myths, realities, and some of the options to meet the housing needs of an aging population that plans to stay in their homes, and aren't likely anytime soon to admit they're aging. These independent Not Old Better Show audience members are interested in thriving in place, and not just aging in place. #309 Rewired - Author, Dr. Ajay Seth
Rewired - Author, Dr. Ajay Seth The Not Old Better Show, Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm host Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #309 As part of our Art of Living Author interview series, we'll be speaking with author of the new book, Rewired, Dr. Ajay Seth. Dr. Ajay K Seth is a board certified orthopedic hand and upper extremity surgeon located in North Canton, Ohio. That is an important element to the story, and we'll get to that… On December 10, 2015, Dr. Seth became the first surgeon in the United States to perform a surgery allowing an amputee, Melissa Loomis, who we'll be speaking with in part 2 of this wonderful 2 part interview. But, Dr. Seth's surgery allowed amputee, Melissa Loomis, to move and feel her prosthetic hand with her brain. The procedure was a 16.5 hour surgery, during which he was able to re-route nerves in the upper arm to give the patient the ability to feel as though the prosthetic hand is her own. Six weeks after surgery, the patient demonstrated that she could feel and move a prosthetic arm and hand. Hear Dr. Seth's story, with an excerpt read by Dr. Seth, and enjoy this new, inspirational book, Rewired. #307 Evangelicalism in America - Joseph Slaughter
Evangelicalism in America - Joseph Slaughter Smithsonian Associates, Interview Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm your host Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode number 307 As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living, interview series, we are going to be talking today about a favorite topic of mine, and from your emails over the last few months, a favorite topic of our Not Old Better Show audience: religion, politics, and evangelicalism, with Joseph Slaughter, professor of history. Every election cycle, and this last one followed the same pattern, American evangelicals are heavy hitters on the demographic scene, a force to be reckoned with for journalists, pundits, politicians, and political strategists. But it was not always so. Who exactly are the evangelicals, where did they come from, how fragmented is evangelicalism, the divisions among evangelicals based on age and ethnicity and what does the term "evangelical" even mean? #306 JD Salinger - The Eloquent Recluse
JD Salinger - The Eloquent Recluse Smithsonian Associates, Interview Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm your host Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode number 306. As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living, series, we are going to be talking about one of my favorite authors, JD Salinger, and our guests today are Daniel Stashower & Scott Sedar. Daniel Stashower is a well known author of history, and Scott Sedar, an actor, who will read selections from JD Salinger's most celebrated works. This show and interview are a treat for me as JD Salinger, and Catcher in the Rye, are all time favorites of mine. Ever since my freshman year of high school, when the book, Catcher in the Rye was suggested to me by my mother, who was an English teacher, I have been infatuated with it. I remember reading it, and re-reading it, I think 6 times, even over the summer months, between freshman and sophomore year of HS. The novel follows a boy, Holden Caulfield, who has an issue with growing up and the loss of innocence. Needless to say, I could relate, as many of us in the Not Old Better Show audience can relate. I love author JD Salinger and his book, Catcher in the Rye, so much because I find beauty in the idea of preserving innocence and appreciating the moments. Not that I hope to be Holden Caulfield (he clearly does not seem to have the perfect life yet who does), but rather I wish I had the same ideals and perspective (of perceiving innocence in everything, and living in the present). We'll talk about that today, innocence, and much more, including whether Holden Caulfield and JD Salinger are really one and the same. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Daniel Stashower and Scott Sedar, who'll be presenting at Smithsonian Associates program, January 7, 2019, JD Salinger, The Eloquent Recluse. #305 Heart Disease Survivor - Hank Plain
Heart Disease Survivor - Hank Plain The Not Old Better Show, Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #305 brought to you by HeartFlow. As part of our Art of Living series, today's show is specifically for those in the Not Old Better Show audience interested in knowing more about the heart, and what the Center for Disease Control has determined is the cause of 1 in every 4 deaths in the United States: coronary artery disease. Coronary Artery Disease is the most common type of heart disease…it is the leading cause of death in the US in both men and women, about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack, and over 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States, again, according to the Center for Disease Control. We have some answers for you today, and our guest, Mr. Hank Plain, is going to tell you his heart disease story. And, by the way, Hank Plain, who has family history of heart disease, thought he was doing all the right things to prevent heart disease. Hank Plain's story has a very happy ending, as Hank and his physicians used the only test on Hank that was truly definitive in defining both the amount of Hank Plain's blockage in his coronary arteries and the actual blood flow restriction. We're going to hear from Hank Plain in just a moment, but I want to emphasize the importance of Hank's story, message and the degree of education available to you about this high mortality condition. Further, we've been given an excellent brochure from HeartFlow, the actual diagnostic test that Hank Plain received, to better educate you all about questions, details and concerns you may have with respect to Coronary Artery Disease. Links to the downloadable brochure will be in today's show notes, or you can email me at info@notold-better.com, and I'll make sure you get one, but please if you're at risk, unsure of your risk, or want to know for a family member, take the next step in a treatment plan that has "demonstrated higher diagnostic performance compared to other non-invasive cardiac tests." That's according to published data, which we'll also link to, HERE> https://hfdc-corpweb.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/assets/docs/HF-3720_PatientBrochure-PGbyPG_Coated-FINAL_2017Jul12/HF-3720_PatientBrochure-PGbyPG_Coated-FINAL_2017Jul12.html For more information about today's show, please check out: https://notold-better.com Talk About Better™ The Not Old Better Show on Radio & Podcast! #304 Traveler's Diarrhea - Holiday Travel Tips
Traveler's Diarrhea - Holiday Travel Tips Food & Travel Interview Series... Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #304, sponsored by Travelan. As part of our Food & Travel Interview Series, today's show is for our Not Old Better Show audience on the move this holiday season, and beyond. In today's show, we'll be joined by Travis Robins, in his role as Director of US Sales for Immuron, the maker of Travelan, the natural supplement that prevents diarrhea from ruining your season's travel plans. If you've ever encountered a stomach bug while traveling either in US or outside, you know it can quickly cut a trip short, and make for an urgent out of town, or out of country medical visit, and visits, either on the other side of the world, or on the other side of the state your visiting. Travis Robins is here to talk about the preventive effects of Travelan, but to also offer general health tips to avoid what's known as TD, traveler's diarrhea, high risk countries to consider planning ahead for use of Travelan, and some of the Travelan technology. As I say, Travelan generously sponsored today's show, but they left the editorial questions and direction to me, knowing we'd want a show with education and information, but when we find a great product, we share it with our Not Old Better community. I should point out that Travelan is approved by regulatory agencies and it has passed rigorous US Army tests of efficacy and treatment value. Because the holidays are upon us, and because we'll be off seeing relatives, grandchildren, and our families who may be scattered, like mine, all over the globe, many of us will be traveling. I want you to do so safely, comfortably, and with as little interruption as possible. I think you'll value this interview with Travis Robins, and most importantly be introduced to a new soluation to a very old problem. Please join me in welcoming to the Not Old Better Show, Travis Robins.
