#3805 COKIE ROBERTS MEMORIAL AND INTERVIEW FROM 03/2019

COKIE ROBERTS MEMORIAL AND INTERVIEW FROM 03/2019 The Not Old Better Show Cokie Roberts, a pioneering journalist who was perhaps best known for her savvy insight and analysis of politics, government and Washington D.C., died today at the age of 75. Her death was due to complications from breast cancer. I will echo many who along with her family, will miss Cokie beyond measure, both for her contributions and for her love and kindness." I spoke to Cokie and Steve Roberts in March of this year and thought I'd re-release this interview as Cokie expresses so well what we came to know about her, and what we'll miss: her kindness, generosity, sharp intellect and thoughtful take on the big issues of the day, including the 4th estate, which she discusses with me. Roberts won many awards, including three Emmys, throughout her decades-long career. She was named a "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress in 2008. Now my interview with Steve and Cokie Roberts… Talk About Better™ The Not Old Better Show on Radio & Podcast! Hosted by Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.

Garrett Graff has written a new book about the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America, titled 'The Only Plane in The Sky, An Oral History." I've had a chance to experience the book and have listened to several of the accounts, what author Garrett Graff refers to as the "Oral History," and this is an excellent book, for all audiences, but our Not Old Better Show audience will remember well the history of 9/11 and genuinely relate to these stories of survival and triumph. Garrett Graff himself has an excellent, impressive history and is today a magazine journalist and historian. Garrett Graff has spent more than a dozen years covering politics, technology, and national security. #378 Dr Bart Ehrman - Great Controversies in Christianity

Dr. Bart Ehrman - Great Controversies in Christianity The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #378. It's great to be back with you all, and thanks for all the warm wishes, welcoming my son, Avery home! We appreciate it. We're back with another great segment today, and as part of our Smithsonian Associates author interview series, we are joined today by author, historian, Christianity scholar, and expert on Jesus Christ and the New Testament, Dr. Bart Ehrman. Dr. Bart Ehrman will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program, September 7, 2019, and the title of his presentation is More Great Controversies in Early Christianity: Bart Ehrman Ponders Four New Questions. Scholars of the New Testament and early Christianity continue to debate a number of crucial issues that matter not only to people of faith but also to anyone interested in the history of the world's largest religion. Following the success of last year's "great controversies" seminar, Bart Ehrman, a leading authority on early Christianity, the New Testament, and the life of Jesus, returns to explore four more intriguing questions. On today's show, we talk all things Christianity with Dr. Bart Ehrman, because Christianity has arguably been the most important force in the history of Western civilization. Whether we view it in religious, social, political, or economic terms, Christianity has deeply and integrally influenced the Western worldview and way of life, as well as our most basic notions of selfhood, morality, and ethics. Without the presence and role of Christianity, our world would be considerably different. As such, understanding Christianity is fundamental to understanding our civilization, our culture, and our origins. Please join me in welcoming back to The Not Old Better Show, Dr. Bart Ehrman, who will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program, Sept. 7, 2019, and the title of his presentation is More Great Controversies in Early Christianity: Bart Ehrman Ponders Four New Questions. #377 What Does a Fitness Hiatus Do to Us Physically?

What Does a Fitness Hiatus Do to Us Physically? New Research from Sabrena Jo. The Not Old Better Show, Fitness Friday Program Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #377. Today's show is brought to you by Stander, at Shopstander.com, where their way of doing business is about you being and remaining independent. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo. On the Fitness Friday program we talk with Sabrena Jo about excise and fitness. But, we've not talked much about getting back to the gym after taking a small hiatus... it can feel like lifting weights, running, or balancing for the very first time. The change is real, and can be pretty discouraging—physically and mentally. But how much is that really throwing you off your fitness goal? And how long is too long before you've disrupted all that hard work you put in? Today on the Fitness Friday show, we'll hear from Sabrena Jo about what happens to your body when you fall off the workout wagon (hey, life happens), and how much progress you really lose. Life does happen, and in some cases, sometimes your body may need the rest, and a time to reset. For most people that are exercising regularly and have a moderate to solid conditioning level [you work out four to six times a week], a week off is an opportunity to take a break and refresh the mind and body, and assuming you don't make it regular habit, you don't need to stress about falling out of shape. Our guest today, recurring exercise researcher, Sabrena Jo, from the American Council on Exercise has new research on how and if your fitness level can fade. Sabrena Jo, ACE Fitness Director of Science and Research Content is here today to tell us, based on new research from the American Council on Exercise, which we'll link to, "Yes, your fitness will fade over time." But, Sabrena Jo will help us understand by how much, and by how quickly? Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via interview phone, ACE Fitness' Sabrena Jo. Today's show is brought to you by Stander, at Shopstander.com, where their way of doing business is about you being and remaining independent. #375 HeartFlow Technology - Interview with CTO, Charley Taylor, Ph.D

HeartFlow Technology - Interview with CTO, Charley Taylor, Ph.D. Science & Technology Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Science & Technology Interview Series, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #375. Today's episode is brought to you by HeartFlow. As part of our Science and Technology Interview series, today's show is excellent, behind the scenes look into the use of a new heart disease diagnostic test using precise 3D images, and at the same time, it reduces healthcare system costs. Today we're speaking with HeartFlow co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Charley Taylor. HeartFlow's Charley Taylor is that rare combination of businessperson and academician. While getting his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Stanford University, Charley Taylor spotted an opportunity to combine computer simulation methods with medical imaging data for patient-specific modeling of blood flow to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. We've talked about Coronary Artery Disease previously, it being the most common type of heart disease…it is the leading cause of death in the US in both men and women, about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack, and over 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control. Charley Taylor answers our questions about Coronary Artery Disease, about potential cost savings to the healthcare system, and future of HeartFlow, and the next healthcare frontier: web, tablets, apps, etc…that emphasize precise visuals, 3D modeling and the sheer power to improve patient care. We'll be joined by Charley Taylor in just a moment, but I want to emphasize the importance of how HearfFlow technology transforms the way cardiovascular disease is diagnosed and treated. Further, we've been given an excellent brochure from HeartFlow, emphasizing the HeartFlow analysis, to better educate you all about the questions, details, and concerns you may have with respect to Coronary Artery Disease. Links to the downloadable brochure will be in today's show notes, or you can email me at info@notold-better.com, and I'll make sure you get one, but please if you're at risk, unsure of your risk, or want to know for a family member, take the next step in a treatment plan that has "demonstrated higher diagnostic performance compared to other non-invasive cardiac tests." That's according to published data, which we'll also link to. Please, though, now join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Dr. Charley Taylor. #374 Grandkids & Exercise - Fitness Friday, Sabrena Jo

Grandkids & Exercise - Fitness Friday, Sabrena Jo Fitness Friday, The Not Old Better Show Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #374. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo. We talk about this a lot on The Not Old Better Show, and our audience knows well, that as we get older, we tend to spend less time in physical activity than when we were younger. According to the Center for Disease Control, less than half of adults exercise enough to meet health guidelines, and even fewer older adults tend to do so (cdc.gov). While getting older is a predictor of reduced physical activity, children today are also getting less physical activity than they did in previous generations, to the detriment of their health and physical development. So, if you are a grandparent (or have friends with grandchildren), you might agree that kids today have less unstructured free play than you did during your own youth. When I was a child, I spent time after school and on weekends riding my bike everywhere, fitness and Physical Education classes were more the norm, and I played with friends all manner of sports, like skiing, which I've talked about before a lot. From what I see, children today are spending more time in front of televisions, computers, and mobile devices. Many governments around the world, like here in the US, have launched campaigns to increase the amount of time families spend in an activity. Both Go4Life.gov and HealthFinder.gov are great websites where you can read about the issue and ways to address this growing health, fitness, and creating exercise habits. But, getting back to grandparents, the American Council on Exercise has new research on how to get kids and grandparents working together, exercising, and having fun all at the same time. Sabrena Jo, ACE Fitness Director of Science and Research Content is here today to talk about a few exercises you can do both on your own and with the younger generation. Since getting older means that we spend less time in physical activity, and with kids moving around less as well, why not set a great example and have fun at the same time! Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via interview phone, ACE Fitness' Sabrena Jo. #373 One Giant Leap - Apollo at 50 - Charles Fishman

One Giant Leap - Apollo at 50 - Charles Fishman Inside Science & Technology Interview Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #373. As part of our Science & Technology, author interview series, today's guest is author, historian, journalist, Charles Fishman. As a reporter, Charles Fishman has tried to get inside organizations, both familiar and secret, and explain how they work. In his most recent book, One Giant Leap, Charles Fishman introduces readers to the men and women who worked to solve 10,000 problems before astronauts could reach the Moon. From the research labs of MIT, where the eccentric and legendary pioneer Charles Draper created the tools to fly the Apollo spaceships, to the factories where dozens of women sewed spacesuits, parachutes, and even computer hardware by hand, Fishman captures the exceptional feats of these ordinary Americans. One Giant Leap is the captivating story of men and women charged with changing the world as we knew it—their leaders, their triumphs, their near disasters, all of which led to arguably the greatest success story, and the greatest adventure story, of the twentieth century. Of course, one of those leaders, President John F. Kennedy astonished the world on May 25, 1961, when he announced to Congress that the United States should land a man on the Moon by 1970. No group was more surprised than the scientists and engineers at NASA, who suddenly had less than a decade to invent space travel. Hearing those stirring words from President Kennedy in 1961 brings back that unique, special time in history. I've invited Charles Fishman author of the new book, One Giant Leap, to talk about his book, the history of that impossible Apollo Mission, and the remarkable story of the trailblazers and the ordinary Americans on the front lines of the epic mission to reach the moon. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Charles Fishman.
