#410 Lindsay Graham - American Elections: Wicked Game
Lindsay Graham - American Elections: Wicked Game The Not Old Better Show, Artist Interview Series Welcome to a special segment of The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #410. The US election season is underway, and our country's political heavyweights will make the big 'final push' in important campaigns across the United States. You know this, but today US voters face a choice that could shape the nation for years, and is so important to all of us, not just members of The Not Old Better Show audience. The November of 2020 elections are approximately 1 year away, and citizens of the United States will cast ballots to elect their president. With feelings of political polarization at an all-time high, though, many are dreading another year of outrage, mourning, and animosity. I hear the following refrain wherever I go, and as Not Old Better Show audience, we ask frequently, "Can't we just go back to the "good ol' days" when political parties worked together, and politicians put country over party? Well, it turns out, those days never existed. It's time to rethink what you thought you knew about presidential politics with the new Wondery podcast: American Elections: Wicked Game. The new show from Wondery, American Elections: Wicked Game looks back some, from the unanimous election of George Washington in 1789 to Donald Trump's surprise victory in 2016, and each episode will explore the truth behind all 58 of America's elections - all the way through the 2020 election. American Elections: Wicked Game host, Lindsay Graham, the host of American History Tellers and American Scandal, and offers answers to the questions: was there ever a "good ol' days" or was presidential politics always played dirty? Americans have this very real animosity. Many of us wonder why we can't just go back to those days where the political climate was far more temperate, and to a renewed spirit of political bipartisanship. And that agreeable past we all remember, a mirage…it was never really there. What is likely to happen? Final outcomes are difficult to predict, especially as media suggest turnout could be the highest it's been in decades, and many prognosticators believe the races remain on a knife-edge of victory or defeat. It won't take much of a nudge in either direction to topple a lot of races! With all that in mind, we'll be speaking with the host of American Elections: Wicked Gam, Lindsay Graham. And, while you're listening, make sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you're listening right now. Just open your podcast app and search for "American Elections: Wicked Game." #409 BEN FOLDS - A Dream About Lightning Bugs
BEN FOLDS - A Dream About Lightning Bugs Smithsonian Associates, The Not Old Better Show Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #409. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Year of Music series, this will be a very special show. In a minute or two, I'll be speaking with Ben Folds. And I'll tell you right out of the gate, I'm a huge fan. My exercise playlist repeats Zak and Sara, and that opening piano in Zak and Sara is just Ben Folds at his best! As a matter of fact, it's hard to think about Ben Folds without the characters in his songs. And now, Ben Folds, in his first book, a memoir titled A Dream About Lightning Bugs: A Life of Music and Cheap Lessons, Ben Folds opens up about those characters, what he knows, what he thinks he knows, and what it took to move from a working-class childhood in North Carolina to stardom. Join me and Ben Folds for a conversation during which Ben Folds talks about his creative process; how his personal life intersects with his songwriting; why he insists that the ups and downs are essential for any artist; and how paying his dues (his polka career never quite took off) and never losing sight of his dream of a creative life helped shape him into the musician he wanted to be. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Ben Folds. #407 Ford V. Ferrari - Review and Conversation
Ford V. Ferrari - Review and Conversation The Not Old Better Show- Movies Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #407. As part of our movie reviews for adults, today we're talking about the new film, Ford V. Ferrari. We've all likely seen the ads, promos, trailers, etc., for the new 'Ford v. Ferrari,' movie. I saw the movie yesterday, and want to share my review, plus two recordings from the film and from Matt Damon about his role. Let's listen as the cast talks about "how Ford needs to think like Ferrari," and what victory at Le Mans will mean to Ford. It's a real 'David and Goliath" story, and one where America shines brightly, but not overly so, in a 'jingoistic' manner, but genuinely tough, smart, and resilient. Just the way we love movies to be. The characters are reluctant heroes, people who live by a strong moral code all their own, often idiosyncratic, sometimes less than law-abiding, but true to their values. We want to be moved, to cry to laugh... to be inspired. This movie is all of that and more." This is a great date night film, so I suggest going early, and try seeing it in IMAX. As a matter of fact, I'm going again, and this time to our local IMAX, taking my son for a car flick for the family. My thanks to EPK for help with the Matt Damon clip, which isn't original to me. My thanks to you, our wonderful Not Old Better Show audience. Talk About Better. The Not Old Better Show. Thanks, everybody. Talk About Better™ The Not Old Better Show on Radio & Podcast! #405 Presidents and the Space Program: How Kennedy, Nixon, and Reagan Set the Trajectory
Presidents and the Space Program: How Kennedy, Nixon, and Reagan Set the Trajectory Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Inside Science Interview Series. featuring Dr. John Hogsdon Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #405 As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Inside Science author interview series, our guest today is Dr.John Logsdon. Dr. John Logsdon is often referred to as the "Dean of space policy," and an educator, author, analyst, and historian of the presidential decisions that have shaped the U.S. space program since its inception. Dr. Logsdon will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates Inside Science author interview series, November 19, 2019. Check out our site for more details. Dr. John Logsdon is the author of John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon and After Apollo? And, Richard Nixon and the American Space Program. In 1961, John F. Kennedy decided that being the leader in space was essential to the United States' national interest, and chose to send Americans to land on the Moon as the most visible element of that quest for preeminence. Even as Apollo 11 achieved the goal set by Kennedy, Richard Nixon decided that there was no need to set an ambitious post-Apollo objective. He mandated that the space agency should compete for priority and funding with other government programs, choosing the space shuttle as the centerpiece of NASA's efforts. Ronald Reagan, with his Kennedy-like rhetoric, treated the space program as an example of American exceptionalism and global leadership. He gave NASA the second half of its post-Apollo ambition, developing a space station as "the next logical step." Though he was the first president to become enthusiastic about potential private-sector space activities, Reagan was a fiscal conservative who followed Nixon's lead in limiting NASA's share of the government budget to far less than what it had been during the Apollo project. Join me and Dr. John M. Logsdon, for a discussion of how presidential leadership impacted America's space program, featuring video clips of remarks by Kennedy, Nixon, and Reagan reflecting their views on that exploration. Dr. Logsdon will be presenting Talk About Better™ The Not Old Better Show on Radio & Podcast! Hosted by Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.

#404 New Edition of Joy Of Cooking - Becker & Scott
New Edition of Joy Of Cooking - Becker & Scott Smithsonian Associates, The Not Old Better Show Author Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #404 Ahhh, I love that music…hopefully it brings to mind images of cooking, food, kitchen time because as part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living author interview series, our guests today are "Joy of Cooking" next-generation co-authors, co-editors, cooks, and husband and wife, John Becker and Megan Scott, and we will be discussing the newest Joy Of Cooking edition. There are nearly 20 million copies of Joy of Cooking in print today, and it's safe to say that most of them are well-worn and close at hand in their owners' kitchens. Originally self-published in 1931 by Irma S. Rombauer, a widowed St. Louis homemaker, the first commercial edition of Joy of Cooking was published in 1936. Subsequent editions were revised and updated by Irma Rombauer and Marion Rombauer Becker throughout the 20th century. Irma Rombauer's great-grandson John Becker, one of our guests today, joined by his wife, Megan Scott, will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates Art of Living author interview series, November 14, 2019. Check out our site for more details. In the process of creating the 9th edition of this classic 'Joy Of Cooking,' experience, John Becker and Megan Scott tell us that in addition to covering all the classic recipes better, one of the important goals was to include all of the ingredients people can now encounter that would have been more difficult to find since the last edition of Joy of Cooking, which was in 2006! In our conversation today John Becker and Megan Scott tell us all about how they've infused the latest incarnation of Joy of Cooking with a contemporary voice informed by culinary tradition, a family's legacy, an encyclopedic coverage of ingredients and techniques, an understanding of the science behind the food, and advice about how to be a great cook: you'll love the answer. That, of course, is Megan Scott, one of our guests today, who, along with her cook, co-author and co-editor husband, John Becker, will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates Art of Living series, The New Joy of Cooking: A Family Recipe, November 14, 2019. #402 How To Recover, Post Workout, After Age 60
How To Recover, Post Workout, After Age 60 Fitness Friday Series with Sabrena Jo Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #402. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo. When we talk about fitness with Sabrena Jo on The Not Old Better Show, we talk a lot about "activity," but not a lot about recovery from activity. As Sabrena Jo reminds us, and our audience knows this well, as we get older we tend to spend less time in physical activity than when we were younger, and even less time recovering from the limited activity we do do. Sabrena Jo, Director of Science and Research Content for the American Council on Exercise, tells us that recovery from exercise depends on many biochemical, hormonal, and physiological processes that can affect the repair and remodeling of protein in muscles and connective tissue. It's quite complex and involves immediate recovery after exercise and slower recovery over the next 24 to 72 hours. Research on age-related muscle recovery has produced inconsistent results. Some studies have found that in older ("masters") athletes, muscles recover more slowly than in their younger counterparts, while other studies have found similar recovery rates between older and younger athletes. It may depend, in part, on the type of exercise. Older athletes tend to recover better from intense cycling, for example than from exercise like running, which leads to greater muscle damage. Of course, all this depends on the age of the athletes (there's almost always a big difference between a 40-year-old and a 70-year-old), how fit they are, and genetic factors. Sabrena Jo, ACE Fitness Director of Science and Research Content is here today to talk giving muscles a day off to recover between workouts. For instance, do a lower-body workout one day, upper-body the next day. Or alternate days of strength training with days of cardio workouts. We'll talk about much more related to exercise recovery today like eating, drinking and protein, so please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, ACE Fitness' Sabrena Jo. My thanks always to Sabrena Jo, ACE Director of Science and Research Content for joining us today. Of course, my thanks to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience.
