#491 John Lennon 1980 - Author Ken Womack
John Lennon 1980 - Author Ken Womack The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Author Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #491. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Year of Music author interview series, our guest today is Beatles biographer extraordinaire, Ken Womack. Ken Womack has written numerous highly acclaimed books about the Beatles and will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program via Zoom, Dec 2. More details are available at the web sites we have listed in the show notes. In today's conversation, music historian Kenneth Womack traces the story behind Double Fantasy, John Lennon's remarkable 1980 comeback album with wife Yoko Ono. Along the way, Womack reads from his forthcoming book John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life and he'll explore with us the powerful, life-affirming story of the former Beatle's renaissance after five years of self-imposed retirement. Lennon's final pivotal year would climax in several moments of creative triumph as he rediscovered his artistic self in dramatic fashion. In thinking about Lennon, Womack shows how the gifted songwriter and musician lived, rather than how he died much too soon. That of course is our guest today, author Ken Womack, reading from his new book, John Lennon The Last Days in the Life. Drawing on new interviews, John Lennon 1980 is an informative, engaging, and often deeply moving portrayal of the final chapter in John Lennon's remarkable life. It isn't a story about how the gifted songwriter and musician died, but rather, about how he lived. Our Not Old Better Show audience loves John Lennon and the Beatles, and you'll love this Smithsonian Associates presentation by Ken Womack, but we have him here today, so please join me in welcoming via internet phone, Beatles author, Ken Womack. My thanks to Beatles biographer, Ken Womack, author of the new book: John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life. Ken Womack will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates on Dec. 2, via Zoom. More details available in the show notes. My thanks, as well, to the fine folks at Smithsonian Associates who always help so much with the show. And, of course, my thanks to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience. Be safe everyone, practice smart social distancing, and Talk About Better. The Not Old Better Show. Thanks, everybody. #490 Are Humans Naturally Good or Bad? - Dr. Rui Diogo
Are Humans Naturally Good or Bad? - Dr. Rui Diogo The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #490. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living series, our guest today is evolutionary biologist, Dr. Rui Diogo. For centuries, philosophers have attempted to answer the question of whether humans are naturally good or evil. Despite the publication of thousands of works on the subject, no satisfactory answer seems to have been found. If philosophy hasn't found the clue, what do other disciplines say about humanity's propensity for good or malice? Evolutionary biologist Rui Diogo, who will be at Smithsonian Associates, via Zoom, Nov 5, 2020, tells us what empirical research actually says about this age-old question. Drawing from the sciences, anthropology, history, sociology, and other fields, Dr. Rui Diogo looks at what empirical data says about our basic nature, and which societies' members are more likely to do each other good or harm. In answers that might surprise you, he cites figures such as those charting homicide rates, life expectancies, suicide rates, types of foods consumed, levels of egalitarianism, frequency of sexual relationships, and stress levels around the world. You might not leave as a better person, but you'll have a better idea of why you—and perhaps all of us—behave as we do. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, via internet phone, Dr. Rui Diogo. Thank you to Rui Diogo for joining me on the show today. Remember, Dr. Rui Diogo will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates, and the title of his presentation is Are Humans Naturally Good of Bad? notes and details are available at our web site, or at Smithsonian Associates' web pages. #489 COVID and Your Gym - Sabrena Jo
COVID and Your Gym - Sabrena Jo The Not Old Better Show, Fitness Friday Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #489. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo. On the Fitness Friday program, we talk with Sabrena Jo about excise and fitness. We all know that exercise is important, especially for our physical and mental health. Returning to exercise after an illness is often a very tough battle, and during our COVID 19 quarantine period, when we've cooped up, without our gyms, we need to be mindful of easing ourselves back into exercise again, particularly after the current Coronavirus outbreak. COVID-19 has dramatically altered the landscape of exercise. Throughout this time, Sabrena Jo and the American Council on Exercise team has been hard at work to ensure that gyms, certified exercise professionals and health coaches, and the public are equipped with timely information to stay safe and adjust to this new normal. Since gyms were forced to close back in March, many gyms have been running free classes via their web sites, doing creative programs, and all sorts of new, innovative ways to keep their community engaged. How's this working…we'll be talking to Sabrena Jo about that and more. I love speaking with Sabrena Jo, American Council on Exercise (ACE) Fitness Director of Science and Research Content, because of her research orientation. Research, fact-based analysis, and outcomes orientation is critical to our Not Old Better Show audience. Please join me in welcoming back to The Not Old Better Show, Sabrena Jo. My thanks always to Sabrena Jo, ACE Director of Science and Research Content for joining us today. And to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience. Please keep your emails coming to me with show ideas, suggestions, and comments: @ info@notold-better.com. Practice smart social distancing, be safe and be well. #486 Active Aging Week - Connie Ruiz, Personal20 & COVID
Active Aging Week - Connie Ruiz, Personal20 & COVID Fitness Friday, The Not Old Better Show Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode # 486. As part of our Fitness Friday series, today's interview is another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. It's Active Aging Week here in the US, and we are celebrating aging and the benefits of active living at any age, Active Aging Week showcases the capabilities of older adults as fully participating members of society. This campaign also spotlights role models that lead the way. Learn how you can join with thousands of Active Aging Week supporters to help change the way we age. Active Aging is Redefining aging. Today we'll be speaking with Connie Ruiz, founder and executive director of Personal20, which is an Electric Muscle Stimulation company, based here in Northern Virginia. "Electrical Muscle Stimulation." I'll say it again, Electrical Muscle Stimulation, known as EMS, is just what it says: electrodes stimulate muscle contractions using electricity. As a matter of fact, with EMS over 36,000 muscle contractions occur, targeting deep muscle fibers, while you are doing an exercise workout program with a skilled Personal Trainer who is approved to work with this new wearable technology. The "you" in the last sentence is actually "me," as I traveled to the Personal 20 facility and was connected to the various electrodes and then spent 20 minutes "exercising" with resistance, all coordinated by personal trainer, Connie Ruiz. Is it safe? Good question. The Personal20 system from e-Fit is one of the systems available with full FDA clearance and approval as an official medical device passing the FDA's regulatory requirements. We'll speak with Connie Ruiz today, and I'll review my progress with you over the next few shows, and I will be speaking with one of the Personal20 trainers about working with older adult clients, all for Active Aging Week. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Connie Ruiz. My thanks to Connie Ruiz, founder and executive director of Personal20, and to all of you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show listeners. As part of our Inside Science interview series, our guest today is Dr. Eliseo Perez-Stable. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, M.D. is Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He oversees the Institute's appropriated budget of $335.8 million to advance the science of minority health and health disparities. Under this framework, the Institute conducts and supports research programs to advance knowledge and understanding of mechanisms to improve minority health, identifies and understands health disparities, and develops effective interventions to reduce these disparities in the community and clinical settings. Recently, the National Institutes of Health has awarded nearly $234 million to improve COVID-19 testing for underserved and vulnerable populations. A part of the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) initiative, the RADx Underserved Populations (RADx-UP). The program will support 32 institutions across the United States and will focus on populations disproportionately affected by the pandemic. These groups include African Americans, American Indians/Alaskan Natives, Latinos/Latinas, Native Hawaiians, older adults, pregnant women, and those who are homeless or incarcerated. Dr. Perez Estable will tell us why it is critical that all Americans have access to rapid, accurate diagnostics for COVID-19, especially underserved and vulnerable populations who are bearing the brunt of this disease. #483 Ralph Nurnberger - Presidential Election
Ralph Nurnberger - Presidential Election The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #483. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living Series, our guest today is historian Ralph Nurnberger. This will be an excellent interview on a subject very much on our minds: Presidential Elections, as well as the Veeps they choose and why. Ralph Nurnberger will be presenting 3 different Smithsonian Associates events, all of which we'll have links to in our show notes. The United States has held 57 presidential elections since the first in 1789. Voters are invariably informed that the current one is "the most important ever," but some elections have proven more significant and historic than others. These led to landmark political changes, including a Constitutional amendment, the dissolution of major political parties, or changes in national policies—including those that altered civil rights for decades to come. Several elections had contested results in which the winner remained in doubt weeks after the ballots were counted. As the 2020 presidential election approaches, historian Ralph Nurnberger looks back on controversial elections under myriad election rules of the day involving electors who cast two indistinguishable ballots. It took 36 votes in the House of Representatives before a winner was declared the winner. We're talking today about Vice Presidents, too. Over the years, presidential nominees' choices of a running mate have reflected everything from an afterthought to a carefully calculated balancing act. While the vice president's duties are spelled out in the Constitution, how they are selected and deployed in the campaign and office seems to change with every election. This is fascinating stuff, and right on time for our 2020 Vote. Join historian Ralph Nurnberger as he clarifies the official aspects of the position and explores the vice-presidential nominee's importance to the overall election. The shifting criteria used to make the decision For more information about Ralph Nurnberger's upcoming Smithsonian Associates presentations, please click these two links: https://smithsonianassociates.org/ticketing/tickets/presidential-elections-of-1800-and-1876 https://smithsonianassociates.org/ticketing/tickets/choosing-vice-president-why-second-spot-is-of-primary-importance Talk About Better™ The Not Old Better Show on Radio & Podcast! #482 Deepak Chopra - Interview Total Meditation
Deepak Chopra - Interview Total Meditation The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Art of Living Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #482. As part of our Smithsonian Associates author interview series, our guest today is Deepak Chopra, appearing at Smithsonian Associates via Zoom, Sept. 29…more details on our web site and at Smithsonian Associates. How can an ancient practice help us face an uncertain future, especially in times during COVID? Two and a half millennia ago, the Buddha taught that inner peace and freedom could be developed and cultivated through training in the mindfulness, compassion, and insight found in the practice of meditation. And research in neuroscience confirms key understandings of this timeless tradition. Join us today with Deepak Chopra as he draws on his new book Total Meditation: Practices in Living the Awakened Life to examine why meditation can serve as a potentially powerful tool to meet the challenges of the moment. Deepak Chopra, who has been at the forefront of the meditation revolution for the last 30 years, shares how meditation awakens new levels of awareness that can cultivate a clear vision, heal suffering in your mind and body, and help recover who you really are. He leads a short meditation practice to get you started on the path to a centered self-meditation practice at the conclusion of the program. My thanks to Deepak Chopra, who will be presenting at Smithsonian Associates on September 29, 2020, via Zoom. Details are available on our web site, or at Smithsonian Associates. Deepak Chopra's new book Total Meditation: Practices in Living the Awakened Life is available, too. Check out the details on the Smithsonian Associates web site.
