Munich became a hotbed of right-wing extremism, with synagogues under attack and Jews physically assaulted in the streets. After the end of World War II, top-secret research continued across the United States as engineers and programmers rushed to complete their confidential assignments. Among them were six pioneering women tasked with figuring out how to program the new Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC). The world's first general-purpose, programmable, all-electronic computer, ENIAC, was built to calculate a single ballistic trajectory in 20 seconds rather than 40 hours by a human hand—but there were no instruction codes or programming languages in existence to guide the women. They succeeded, but their story was never told to the reporters and scientists fascinated by the huge computer after it became public—and it was lost. #656 Dear Barack - Claudia Clark
Dear Barack - Claudia Clark The Extraordinary Partnership Between Barack Obama and Angela Merkel Welcome to The Not Old Better Show on radio and podcast. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and today's show is generously brought to you by Ka'Chava, Elysium Health, and Newspapers.com Working with people who are dissimilar in personality and thought can prove perplexing, if not impossible, yet it doesn't mean that successful working partnerships cannot be developed. One such partnership nearly didn't happen; then, after it did, it nearly died. One of the great political friendships of the modern world is between US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel as two of the world's most influential leaders, together at the center of some of the biggest controversies and most impressive advancements of our time. But while their friendship has been the subject of both scrutiny and admiration, few know the full story. Our guest today, author Claudia Clark, tells us about the two world leaders taking office at the height of the 2008 global recession; Obama was keenly aware of the fractured relationship between the US and Europe. And for her part, Merkel was suspicious of the charismatic newcomer who had captivated her country, a state visit, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom award…let's listen as Claudia Clark reads a passage from her new book. That, of course, is our guest today, Claudia Clark reading from her new book, Dear Barack, which is a thoroughly researched document of the parallel trajectories that led to Obama and Merkel meeting on the world stage and the trials, both personal and political, that they confronted in office. Join Claudia Clark and me as we discuss a story of camaraderie on a global scale; Clark's book and our interview today about 'Dear Barack' shows that it is possible for political adversaries to establish bonds of respect—and even friendship—in the service of the free world. My thanks today to our sponsors, Ka'Chava Newspapers.com and Elysium Health. Please check out our show notes for more information about our sponsors, and please support our sponsors because they, in turn, support the show. Please check out our show notes today about each sponsor and support our sponsors as they support the show. Peregrine falcons nesting on high-rise ledges, cougars prowling in yards, and seals lolling on urban beaches: these are now familiar sights to city-dwellers and to those who follow them on social media. As environmental studies professor Peter S. Alagona shows in his new book THE ACCIDENTAL ECOSYSTEM: People and Wildlife in American Cities this relatively new phenomenon of thriving animal life in urban areas is more than an eye-catching curiosity or an example of society encroaching on nature. Instead, it's a whole new ecosystem, one that shows how animals and humans can live together peacefully, how species can adapt in extremely short time periods, and how we can start to right the ecological sins committed when urban sprawl first began. Peter Alagona will be reading a brief passage and description from his book in just a moment, but let me give you a quick message from one of our partners today, Ka'Chava… I've asked our guest, Peter Alagona, to introduce his reading selection today for us… That of course, is our guest today, Peter Alagona reading a passage from his new book, THE ACCIDENTAL ECOSYSTEM: People and Wildlife in American Cities. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and today's show is brought to you by Ka'Chava and Find A Grave. Please check out our show notes today about each sponsor and support our sponsors as they support the show. What does it mean when someone says, "I'm not wired that way." Usually, that adage refers to whether we can learn something, understand something, or how easily a person's brain pilots us through new information and more. Our guest today on the Not Old Better Show, Science Interview Series is Dr. Chantel Prat, who'll help understand the human brain's adventure. With style and wit, Chantel Prat takes us on a tour of the meaningful ways our brains are dissimilar. Dr. Prat will use real-world examples and other data to show us today how to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your own brain while learning what might be going on in the brains of those who are unlike you. Dr. Prat's new book The Neuroscience of You will be the focus of our conversations and will help us see how brains that are engineered differently ultimately take diverse paths when it comes time to prioritize information, use what they've learned from experience, relate to other people, and what does it mean to be different? That of course, is our guest today, Dr. Chantel Prat, reading from her new book, 'The Neuroscience of You.' Please join me today for a wonderful conversation to help us understand ourselves and others by zooming in so close that we all look gray and squishy. #653 Home Economics: Why Now? - Danielle Dreilinger
Home Economics: Why Now? - Danielle Dreilinger The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series The Secret History of Home Economics Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates interview series on radio and podcast. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and for all of us in The Not Old Better Show audience, the term "home economics" may conjure traumatic memories of lopsided hand-sewn pillows or sunken muffins. But the common conceptions obscure the real story and value of the once-revolutionary "science of better living." The field exploded opportunities for women in the 20th century by reducing domestic work and providing jobs as professors, engineers, chemists, and businesspeople. And, according to our Smithsonian Associates guest today, author Danielle Dreilinger it has something to teach us today: that everyone should learn how to cook a meal, balance their bank account, and fight for a better world. Danielle Dreilinger will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up so check out our website for more information. But, we have Danielle Dreilinger today, and we'll talk about her new book, The Secret History of Home Economics: How Trailblazing Women Harnessed the Power of Home and Changed the Way We Live, and she'll traces the field's of Home Economics history and the achievements of the women in it who became chemists and marketers; studied nutrition, health, and exercise; tested parachutes; created astronaut food; and took bold steps in childhood development and education. Home economics followed the currents of American culture even as it shaped them. Danielle Dreilinger will discuss the racism within the movement and the strides taken by women of color who were influential leaders and innovators. She also looks at women's personal lives in the field, as they chose to be single, shares lives with other women, or try for egalitarian marriages. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates interview series, author, and Smithsonian Associate, Danielle Dreilinger. My thanks to author Danielle Dreilinger who will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates, so check out our website for more information.
