NCAA Champion Charles Hicks Turns Pro, Joins Nike Bowerman Track Club
"Even in the first week, it's just extremely apparent that this is the perfect environment for me. We've already done workouts that would pretty much have been impossible for me before, but I think it's just having so many World Championship Olympic quality guys in a train that I can just hop into and be a part of that just really elevates every athlete. A lot of people think you become the average of the people you spend the most time around–and these guys are just the absolute best in the world"
Charles Hicks who is coming off a runner-up finish in the 10,000 meters at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where he finished right behind his Stanford teammate Ky Robinson.
Last November, he made history as the first runner from Stanford University to win an NCAA individual cross country title. In his four years at Stanford, he has earned multiple All-American and Pac-12 honors and titles. In addition to all of the collegiate success, he is a two-time European under-23 cross country champion while representing Great Britain.
Now, he’s ready to open a new chapter. He has decided to forego the remainder of his NCAA eligibility to turn pro, sign with Nike and join the Bowerman Track Club under coach Jerry Schumacher.
In the latest episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast, we discuss everything about the decision, how long he’s wanted to be a pro runner, what his hopes are for representing Team GB at global championships and the future of his YouTube channel.

Eliud Kipchoge On What's Next After Boston Disappointment, Faith Kipyegon's Rise (Bonus: Kelly Clarkson Trivia)
"The six stars is still the dream. We’re still seeing what will happen but it’s still a dream."
It’s been two months since Eliud Kipchoge walked off Boylston Street following a sixth-place finish at the Boston Marathon. It was a bit of a shocker for him. He, entered the weekend with 15 wins in 17 marathons and looking to check off Boston from his list of the World Marathon Majors that he has yet to win. The ideal plan would have been win Boston, win New York and then focus on becoming the first man to win three Olympic gold medals in the marathon. Not everyone gets the storybook ending. The Boston victory will have to wait. Plans for the fall have yet to be announced but are expected soon.
I was invited to Kenya by the NN Running Team to get a first-hand look at how Kipchoge lives and trains in his camp in Kaptagat. I witnessed a morning workout on the track, a 40K long run, a strength session and also got to join in on an easy run. It was easy for him – not so much for me. I stayed on the heels of the greatest marathoner in the world for two miles before he took off. It was a surreal experience and I’ve been comparing it to being invited by Michael Jordan for a pickup game of basketball on his home court.
Eventually, the altitude (7800 feet above sea level), the jet lag and maybe a little lack of fitness compared to all of these pro runners led to me getting dropped. I did manage to complete the whole 10K run and while I was solo for the final two miles, I took a moment to appreciate how my career landed me in such a unique and blessed opportunity to be in Kenya among some of the best marathoners in the world.
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to catch up one-on-one with Kipchoge for a brief interview. You can catch his previous appearance on the podcast here: https://apple.co/3CNguVd
In this short chat, you’ll hear a bit more about what happened in Boston, what happens next, Faith Kipyegon’s recent success and of course – our shared love for Kelly Clarkson, who just released a new album. I made sure to let him know while I was at the camp.

NN Running Team Coach Patrick Sang On His Success With Faith Kipyegon, Eliud Kipchoge
"We think of ourselves as people on a journey. So when you get to your first station, that's not the end of the journey. We still have to walk some more distance. That is their mindset and it's my mindset because if I dwell on the past, then we'll end up in that station. We still have many to cover, and I’m happy that they still trust me to cover their distance and be with them."
CITIUS MAG is in Kenya. I am coming to you live from Eldoret, where I had the pleasure of being invited to visit and cover some of the behind-the-scenes of how the NN Running Team trains.
Coach Patrick Sang is 59 years old and is the man behind all of Kipchoge’s success on the track and the roads. He’s the runner who Eliud grew up admiring since Sang was a silver medalist in the steeplechase at the 1992 Olympics. He’s been coaching for more than half his life and is one of the most knowledgeable men in the sport. While he keeps it traditional and old-school in some of his approaches to training with three hard workouts a week for most of his athletes including Kipchoge, his philosophy is aimed at making his athletes well-rounded.
One of his most recent success stories has been Faith Kipyegon cementing herself as the greatest 1500m runner ever by breaking the 1500m world record in 3:49.11 at the Florence Diamond League on June 2 and then surprising herself a week later and breaking the 5000 meter world record in 14:05.20.
What you’re about to listen to is my conversation with one of the greatest minds in the sport and someone who wasn’t surprised by Faith Kipyegon. He’ll share how we got to this point, where we’re going and what brings him joy and satisfaction in the sport.

Adaejah Hodge’s Road to World Championships Makes A Stop At New Balance Nationals + Coach Gerald Phiri On Coaching Generational Talent
"I always define the impossible as possible. Nothing is impossible to me. I always put my mind to do impossible things."
Montverde Academy rising senior Adaejah Hodge shook the track and field world when she won the New Balance Nationals Indoor 200m title in 22.33 seconds. The performance broke the previous record of 22.97 by Bianca Knight, which stood since 2007.
Hodge also qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary later this summer, where she will represent the British Virgin Islands. She holds the BVI national records in the outdoor 100m (11.11s) and indoor 200m (22.33s).
On Memorial Day weekend, we paid a visit to Clermont, Florida to witness her work on her powerful start and smooth stride alongside coach Gerald Phiri.
The 17-year-old has tremendous potential to become one of the best sprinters in the world. Her work ethic and her personality are unmatched for someone her age.
Hodge is entered in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x200m relay and 4x400m relay and sprint medley relay at New Balance Nationals Outdoor from June 15-18 in Philadelphia. You will be able to watch all of the action LIVE and for FREE on the New Balance YouTube channel.

Get To Know CITIUS MAG Europe Correspondent David McCarthy + Interviews With Jakob Ingebrigtsen & His Father Gjert Ingebrigtsen
"This is a lesson to all people out there to keep the faith. Sometimes even though what you think you might want, might not be what's for you. As my mother always said to me, 'What's for you won't pass you by.' Sometimes we just need to have a little patience. And sometimes that patience can not just be weeks or months but it can be years. I've always thought I'm meant to be in the sport. I have to be in the sport. That's not being egotistical. It's good to have passionate people in this sport. That's what we need. I feel like I can bring that and I'm so grateful now that I can bring it through CITIUS."
David McCarthy is CITIUS MAG’s Europe correspondent right now. We’ve had him at On Track Nights in London and Paris. He was at the Paris and Florence Diamond League. He secured interviews with Jakob Ingebrigtsen and his father Gjert, which have taken off on our YouTube channel but you’ll also be able to listen to within this episode. His passion for track and field has made him an instant match to work with us at CITIUS.
The athletes have seemed receptive to him. The fans have enjoyed watching. I figured I’d give him a proper welcome to the team and have him share a bit of his own backstory on the podcast since you’ll be seeing and hearing much more from him on CITIUS MAG’s channels.
