The Owen Jones Podcast
Owen Jones
Owen Jones, journalist, author of Chavs and The Establishment, or "that left-wing idiot off the telly", is fed up with the establishment media. After all, it punches down, not up, blames minorities for all the problems in society, and, let's face it, often just parrots the government line. So this podcast is offering something different: speaking truth to power, giving the marginalised a voice, offering hope - and having a laugh along the way. From Michael Sheen to Judith Butler, Prof. Devi Sridhar to Noam Chomsky, Peter Hitchens to Chelsea Manning and Gary Younge to Stewart Lee, the interviewees couldn't be more eclectic. Expect documentaries, too, exposing injustice and going to enemy territory - and discussions with experts on everything from COVID dreams about the pandemic to the history of US-backed coups. We'll learn a lot - but above all else, have our optimism in a better world rebooted. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Hosted on Acast. General Election NOW!
As Liz Truss is forced out of office, Britain will have its third prime minister this year. Whether it's Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt or indeed Boris Johnson - who is plotting a return - this farce leaves Britain in an economic and soil death spiral. Only a general election gives this country hope of being prised away from the grip of these lunatics - but will the Tories ever allow an election which could wipe them out? And how much is the Tory crisis about something far more profound - a broken economic model that itself has to go?We're joined by the brilliant economist Faiza Shaheen. Please subscribe - and help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Does Liz Truss HATE me?
According to Liz Truss' former advisor, the now Prime Minister had one person she never wanted to appear on Question Time with because "he was a long-time baiter". Well, as someone who's been on the programme with her... was she talking about me? On Question Time I made an argument about a major threat posed by the Tories if we left the EU on their terms - and there's a big lesson to learn from it..Please subscribe - and help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. New Poll: Liz Truss Nearly As Unpopular As Putin
As a new poll shows that Liz Truss is almost as unpopular with British citizens as Vladimir Putin, her 'apology' should be treated with the contempt it deserves. But don't let the Tories get away with blaming all this on her: this was a team effort, and now they all have to pay. Please subscribe - and help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. "Why We Threw Soup At Van Gogh"
When Just Stop Oil threw soup at a Van Gogh painting, there was outrage across social media - including from people who considered themselves naturally sympathetic to their cause. So I wanted to find out the truth: as it turns out, the soup was thrown over glass - no painting was harmed in the making of this protest - and Emma Brown from the group joins me, asking what should we really be angry about - soup over a glass, or the destruction of our planet. But was this tactic helpful or counterproductive - and how does she answer their critics? This is the only media outlet where you'll find a fair platform for the group, which we're glad to provide. Please subscribe - and help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Trussterf*ck: Why Liz Truss' Biggest Disasters Are Still To Come
Liz Truss has already had the most disastrous record of any new British prime minister: after a mini budget which promised a massive raft of tax cuts to the wealthy plunged the economy into turmoil, she's thrown her Chancellor under a bus, u-turned on her policies and appointed Jeremy Hunt. But Hunt is a passionate cheerleader of austerity and has already committed to spending cuts - after years of slash-and-burn economic policies have devastated public services. Is Truss going to survive - and what does a return to cuts mean for Britain's society and economy? We're joined by New Statesman Senior Editor George Eaton economist and writer James Meadway to talk it all over. Please subscribe - and help us take on the right-wing media: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Tories: Facing Oblivion?
After a disastrous party conference, Liz Truss and the Tories are in polling freefall, and the spectre of electoral calamity now seems increasingly likely. Is it all over? And where is Labour in all this?We are joined by Opinium pollster Chris Curtis, and Guardian columnist Zoe Williams. Please subscribe - and help us take on the right wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Stella Assange Speaks Out
Julian Assange faces up to 175 years behind bars if he's extradited to the United States. Why? Because he embarrassed the world's remaining superpower by exposing its war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. His wife, Stella, joins us to explain why what Assange did is so important, why he has suffered persecution, the human impact on both of them - and why everyone should join a human chain around Parliament on Saturday 8th October: https://www.nuj.org.uk/learn/ems-event-calendar/free-assange-human-chain.htmlPlease subscribe - and helps us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Behind the Scenes at Tory Conference: Fear and Loathing
The Tories under Liz Truss face catastrophe - but sadly, so does the country. I've gone straight to Conservative conference to ask delegates exactly how it's all going. Brace yourselves!Truss's attempt to slash taxes for the rich caused the markets to collapse, and despite a humiliating u-turn on the 45p rate, the government is still set to cut taxes for big business while hacking away benefits for the struggling. It hasn't gone well - the Tories' polling has collapsed, and they're set, as things stand, for a devastating election defeat. What does the grassroots think about all of this: well, wow, is all I can say...Please subscribe - and help us make more videos challenging the Tories here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Behind the Scenes at Labour Conference 2022
So, the Tories are in polling meltdown and they've crashed the economy: the election is now Labour's to lose, and here at the annual conference, delegates know it. But is this party still a broad church? Has Keir Starmer abandoned the promises he made to become Labour leader? Has the party finally adopted a bold transformative agenda in this crisis-ridden country? And could Labour really finally be on the brink of power? Please subscribe - and help us take on the right-wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast.
