The Owen Jones Podcast
Owen Jones
Owen Jones, journalist, author of Chavs and The Establishment, or "that left-wing idiot off the telly", is fed up with the establishment media. After all, it punches down, not up, blames minorities for all the problems in society, and, let's face it, often just parrots the government line. So this podcast is offering something different: speaking truth to power, giving the marginalised a voice, offering hope - and having a laugh along the way. From Michael Sheen to Judith Butler, Prof. Devi Sridhar to Noam Chomsky, Peter Hitchens to Chelsea Manning and Gary Younge to Stewart Lee, the interviewees couldn't be more eclectic. Expect documentaries, too, exposing injustice and going to enemy territory - and discussions with experts on everything from COVID dreams about the pandemic to the history of US-backed coups. We'll learn a lot - but above all else, have our optimism in a better world rebooted. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. Hosted on Acast. 96. Steve Turner on standing to be Unite's left-wing general secretary
The race to be Unite's next general secretary could not be more politically important: the union is as the very heart of the British left. But there are three left-wing candidates standing, and the right-wing candidate - Gerard Coyne - has every chance of winning because of a split vote. The political consequences for the left would be nothing short of catastrophic.Steve Turner - who won the most nominations - sets out his case to be Len McCluskey's successor: from his record as the chair of the People's Assembly Against Austerity to his lifelong commitment to socialism, why he supported Jeremy Corbyn to his anti-fascism, how Unite would fight for workers and left-wing policies - to what's at stake for all of us in this election.Help us take on the right wing media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. 95. Why I'm supporting BDS - and why you should too
The Palestinian people have endured over 5 decades of Israeli occupation, the longest belligerent occupation on earth. Their land is being colonised by illegal settlements on the West Bank, while Gaza is under perpetual siege. This is not just occupation, siege and colonisation: as Human Rights Watch have recently announced, this is apartheid. In Israel-proper, Palestinians are treated as third class citizens, formalised by the so-called ‘nation state law’. Since 2000, over 10,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed by Israel, nearly 8 times the number of Israelis who have been killed. In the recent Israeli onslaught against Gaza, 256 Palestinians were killed, including 66 children. Here's why I'm backing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions on Israel - including answering the questions and concerns I had, and why we owe this to the Palestinian people.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. 94. The Establishment war against trans people
Most of the British media is spending Pride month monstering trans people and Stonewall, the country's main LGBTQ+ charity. The same tunes that were once repeated about and gay and bisexual people are being played about trans people. We're told trans rights are a threat to women's rights and a threat to children's safety. To tell the truth - about the actual lived experience of trans people, about the law, about transphobic myths - are journalist Freddy McConnell and lawyer Lui Asquith.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. 92. Paris Lees: the truth about trans people
Paris Lees is a trailblazer: a trans woman who emerged into public view at the beginning of the 2010s when trans people had very little visibility at all, she was the first trans columnist at Vogue, a presenter, a journalist, and campaigner. Her stunning new memoir - What It Feels Like For A Girl - documents a life that began on a Nottinghamshire council estate, the anti-LGBTQ hatred she suffered growing up, spending time in a young offender's institution, to ending up a panellist on Question Time to presenting shows on the BBC.We talk about her life - and how trans people are suffering a vicious campaign of transphobia in modern Britain.Help us take on an often hateful media here: https://patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. 91. Ed Miliband on thinking big, regrets, the climate emergency, and what Labour stands for
Ed Miliband regrets not being bolder when he was Labour leader, and his new book - 'GO BIG: How To Fix Our World' - is bursting with ideas, like universal basic income, citizens assemblies, a housing revolution, a Green New Deal, and why struggle from below pays off. We talk about how a world wracked with crisis needs courageous and bold ideas - and I ask why Labour is failing to dismally to offer an inspiring alternative.Help us take on the right-wing media here: patreon.com/owenjones84Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast.
