He is best known for his advocacy of anti-natalism in his book Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence, in which he argues that coming into existence is a serious harm, regardless of the feelings of the existing being once brought into existence, and that, as a consequence, it is always morally wrong to create more sentient beings. He’s also the author of books like The Second Sexism: Discrimination Against Men and Boys (2012), and The Human Predicament: A Candid Guide to Life's Biggest Questions (2017). In this episode, we focus on The Second Sexism. We first go through some concepts, definition and clarifications. Dr. Benatar distinguishes between the first and the second sexism, and also between disadvantages and wrongful discrimination. We then address several domains where there is wrongful discrimination against men, like violence and sexual assault, family laws, education, military service, imprisonment and crime sentences, and circumcision. We also discuss social stereotypes about men and women, and where behavioral differences come from, and if they are ethically relevant. We also talk about how misleading the term “gender violence” is, and in any ways some arguments put forth by feminists against the second sexism are wrong. We specifically address the arguments Dr. Benatar names as the inversion argument, the costs-of-dominance argument, and the distraction argument. He is known for efforts to involve the public as citizen scientists in arthropod surveys and bacterial flora studies. His projects include studies of belly button biodiversity, mites that live on human faces, ants in backyards, and fungi and bacteria in houses. He’s the author of five books, his most recent one being Never Home Alone: From Microbes to Millipedes, Camel Crickets, and Honeybees, the Natural History of Where We Live. In this episode, we focus on Never Home Alone. We discuss how living in homes changed our dynamics with other species, particularly species of insects, bacteria and fungi, and how some of them adapted to the home environment. We talk about how some of them are neutral, others beneficial, and still others detrimental to our health, and also about the importance of being exposed to biodiversity. We also get into the effects that the most common pets (cats and dogs) might have on us. Dr. Andrews is on the board of directors of the Borneo Orangutan Society Canada, a member of the College of the Royal Society of Canada, and the author of several books on social minds, animal minds, and ethics. In this episode, we talk about how to properly study animal minds, and also issues regarding animal ethics. We start by discussing how difficult it is to study non-human animals’ behavior and minds, and Dr. Andrews presents the calibration method. We also discuss how we can use folk psychology as a starting point. We talk about the flaws with anthropomorphism and anthropectomy. We then get into the issue of theory of mind, and how to deal with consciousness in animal cognitive studies. Dr. Andrews also refers to recent exciting research that points to the possibility of plants also having consciousness and minds. Finally, we get into animal ethics, and discuss specifically issues related to how we can determine if there are other animals that also are moral agents, and how to study moral normativity in non-human animals. His primary research interests are metaphysics and its history (mainly in German philosophy). His first book, Kant’s Modal Metaphysics, was published by Oxford University Press in 2016. While most of Dr. Stang’s published work has been about Kant, he is increasingly interested in pre-Kantian rationalism (Leibniz, Spinoza) and in post-Kantian figures, especially Hegel and Heidegger. He also works on contemporary metaphysics and aesthetics. His side interests include: Jewish philosophy, early analytic philosophy, philosophy of mathematics, and critical theory. In this episode, we focus on Kantian philosophy, particularly on his metaphysics, epistemology and ethics. We start by presenting what metaphysics is, and the sorts of questions it deals with. We also talk about hos modern metaphysics positions itself in relation to science and Physics, referring on the way to the epistemological limits of a materialist approach. Then we get into Kant’s metaphysics, and explore concepts like the noumenon and the phenomenon. After that, we move to his epistemology, and discuss sensibility, the categories of understanding, and pure Reason with its antinomies. Finally, we go through Kantian ethics, and the necessity of a God, a soul and free will. Camerer is the Robert Kirby Professor of Behavioral Finance and Economics at the California Institute of Technology, where he teaches cognitive psychology and economics. His work seeks a better understanding of the psychological and neurobiological basis of decision-making in order to determine the validity of models of human economic behavior. His research uses mostly economics experiments—and occasionally field studies—to understand how people behave when making decisions (e.g., risky gambles for money), in games, and in markets (e.g., speculative price bubbles). In 2013, Dr. Camerer was named a MacArthur Fellow. In this episode, we focus on the modern science of economics, integrated with cognitive and experimental psychology, and neuroscience. We first discuss the different types of decision-making that we are cognitively endowed with. We address what rationality is from an economics perspective. We talk about the importance of collecting data from different sources to develop a full understanding of our cognitive mechanisms, from psychology, economics, anthropology and neuroscience. Then, we focus on the current state of the art in neuroscience, its limitations as a discipline and at the level of its imaging techniques, and the knowledge we can draw from it. We also refer to the limitations of lab experiments, and how they can be complemented by field studies in natural settings. We also talk about individualist vs collectivist approaches in economics; how to think about social norms; and what are “beliefs” in economics. In his research in personality psychology, he has examined the theoretical structure of personality and the biological basis of personality. In this episode, we talk about the Big Five personality traits and their ten aspects. We first go through the ten aspects. We then talk about the personality traits of liberals and conservatives, and gender differences in personality. We discuss the behavioral genetics of personality, the neuroscience of it, and the changes in personality that occur across the lifespan. In the latter part of the conversation, Dr. DeYoung explains his Cybernetic Big Five Theory (CB5T), and a cybernetic theory of psychopathology. Her areas of specialization include cross-cultural psychology, social psychology, and socio-ecological approaches to human behavior. He holds a BCL from University College Cork (2006); an LLM from Trinity College Dublin (2007); and a PhD from University College Cork (2011). He was lecturer in law at Keele University in the UK from 2011 until 2014. He joined NUI Galway in July 2014. Dr. Danaher’s research focuses on the ethical, legal and social implications of new technologies. He maintains a blog called Philosophical Disquisitions, and produces a podcast with the same title. He also writes for the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies, and is the author of the recent book, Automation and Utopia: Human Flourishing in a World without Work. In this episode, we go through the major topics in Dr. Danaher’s book, Automation and Utopia. We first talk about human obsolescence, the present conditions of the labor market, and how to improve them through automation. We discuss technological unemployment and the Universal Basic Income. Then, we talk about how automation might interfere with domains of human life that could impede human flourishing. We also address the advantages and disadvantages of turning into cyborgs.
