Dr. Kristina Durante is an associate professor of marketing, Marketing Department Vice Chair, and the marketing Ph.D. program coordinator at Rutgers Business School. She is a social psychologist interested in the biology of decision-making. Her research lies at the intersection of social psychology, evolutionary biology, and consumer decision-making. Dr. Durante’s research program focuses on how our evolved biology (ancestral ecology and internal physiological systems) and our modern social environment interact to influence behavior.
In this episode, we focus on ovulation, and women’s mate preferences and consumer behavior. We discuss how female intrasexual competition changes across the ovulatory cycle, and how that manifests in terms of consumer choices and health-related risky behavior. We talk about how we should think about the relationship between our evolved psychology and the modern conditions we live in. We refer to what happens to women’s consumer patterns in a situation of economic decline. In the final part of our talk, we discuss how women can improve their mate preferences, to be more in line with modern conditions, and also how they might improve their current relationships.

Dr. John Hoffecker is Fellow of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR). He specializes in archaeology and human paleoecology. His primary research focus is the global dispersal of anatomically modern humans, which began more than 50,000 years ago in Africa. He is the author of several books, including Modern Humans: Their African Origin and Global Dispersal (2017).
In this episode, we focus on Dr. Hoffecker’s book. We cover some of the major topics of the book, including: the importance of the human hand and the vocal tract in our evolution, and particularly for the development of culture; what are modern humans; Out of Africa migrations for both species before and after H. sapiens; the technology H. sapiens needed for the migrations to be possible; the evolution and interaction with Neanderthals and Denisovans; the origins of H. sapiens; the reasons behind the migrations; the extinction of megafauna; and human geographic races.

Dr. Niels Dingemanse is Tenured Professor in Behavioural Ecology in the Department of Biology at the Ludwig Maximilians University, Germany. He conducts evolutionary behavioral ecology research, asking questions about the adaptive evolution of behavioral strategies, and their genetic architectures, within an ecological context. His research is motivated by behavioral ecology, life-history, and quantitative genetics theory, and seeks to test predictions and assumptions of adaptive theory using observational and experimental approaches in the laboratory and the wild.
In this episode, we focus on animal personality. We discuss the relationship between ecology and evolutionary biology, the evolution of behavioral traits, and behavioral plasticity. We then get into personality, and go through its behavioral genetics, social roles, and ecological aspects individuals respond to.

He has served as editor or editorial board member of numerous journals and is past president of the Animal Behavior Society and the Society for Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology (APA Div. 6). He has edited or co-edited 6 books and authored The Genesis of Animal Play: Testing the Limits (MIT Press, 2005).
In this episode, we talk about the evolution of play. First, we define play from a biological perspective, including five different criteria for a particular behavior to be classified as play. We talk about the three different categories of play (locomotor, object, and social). We also discuss play signals, role reversals, self-handicapping, the diversity of play, its downsides and costs, pseudo-copulatory play in spiders, and the surplus resources theory. About killing in ward, we address questions like what is a just and an unjust war, the circumstances where soldiers are morally justified to kill other soldiers, excusable conditions for participating in war, when civilians might be liable to being targeted by soldiers, coercion, and teaching moral philosophy to soldiers. In the second part, we discuss the ethics of vegetarianism, and we go through different objections to it, like the pleasure we derive from eating meat, the possibility of the extinction of farm animals, and raising animals in a humane way. We also talk about eating already dead animals, cannibalism, and lab-grown meat.

Her research is in the philosophy of the cognitive sciences. She is the author of The Epistemic Innocence of Irrational Beliefs.
In this episode, we talk about The Epistemic Innocence of Irrational Beliefs. We start with some basic concepts, like “irrational beliefs”, “epistemic irrationality”, “epistemics functionality”, and “epistemic innocence”, and we apply them to a philosophical and scientific context. We go through some examples where epistemic innocence applies, like self-narratives, optimism and pessimism, mental disorders, romantic relationships, and religious beliefs. Finally, we discuss how the epistemic innocence project might apply in a clinical context, and in understanding how our normal cognition works.

Dr. Paul Bloom is the Brooks and Suzanne Ragen Professor of psychology and cognitive science at Yale University. His research explores how children and adults understand the physical and social world, with special focus on language, morality, religion, fiction, and art. He is the author of books like How Children Learn the Meanings of Words (2000), How Pleasure Works: The New Science of Why We Like What We Like (2010), Just Babies: The Origins of Good and Evil (2013), and Against Empathy: The Case for Rational Compassion (2016).
In this episode, we talk about human nature and empathy. We start with a bit of developmental psychology, and discuss how we study babies, and how good they really are as models for human nature and the innateness of behavior. We also deal with mind-body dualism, and how people think about the physical world and the social world differently. We then get into moral development. We also talk about Against Empathy, the distinction between emotional and cognitive empathy, compassion, and psychopathy. We tackle the link between morality and violence, and we talk a little bit about dehumanization. Finally, Dr. Bloom lifts the veil on his upcoming book, about pleasure and/in pain.

Dr. Christopher J. Ferguson is professor of psychology at Stetson University. He is interested in media violence and, in particular, video games. Dr. Ferguson is also interested in the sociology of media research itself...how political pressure, social moral panics and culture war can distort media effects research into "opinions with numbers.". He’s the author of How Madness Shaped History: An Eccentric Array of Maniacal Rulers, Raving Narcissists, and Psychotic Visionaries.
In this episode, we talk about the psychological effects of media, and How Madness Shaped History. We start by talking about a bit of the history of how people tend to demonize new technology. We then get into specific technologies, like videogames, movies, and series. We address specifically 13 Reasons Why, and screen time. Finally, we cover come of the main topics of How Madness Shaped History, and discuss things like a distinction between madness, mental illness, and insanity; how complicated it is to diagnose historical figures; if mental health professionals should diagnose politicians; and how someone gets mad.
