Moment #26: From Individual Contributor to Leader

Moment #26 // Of the many mistakes that new leaders are prone to make, over-functioning for certain individuals is one of the most common, and the most insidious. When you do this, it tells your people that what they're doing isn't good enough. It trains them to be lazy and complacent, because you'll always step in to finish their job for them if you’re not happy. And they'll keep getting paid for not doing their job to the standard you expect. Excellent leaders give their people clarity of purpose, resources, coaching, and autonomy. They lead people to do their jobs—they don’t do their jobs for them. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.172: Stop Doing Your People's Work, or by reading my article in Harvard Business Review.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Building a Better Mousetrap: The productivity reality

Episode #255 // Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door!”. This quote, espousing the value of innovation, has been liberally used and abused over the years.I came across it again recently in an article from McKinsey: Turning Around the Productivity Slowdown… so, what is productivity? And what’s the relationship between productivity and innovation? In today’s episode, I look at productivity from a number of different angles. What does it mean in the world of macroeconomics? How does productivity impact our standard of living? On a day-to-day level, what does it mean for your type of industry and organization? Can productivity provide a competitive advantage? It doesn’t matter what type of organization you’re leading in, improving productivity will reap huge benefits for all your stakeholders… including the people who work for you. But, getting your head around why you should have a constant focus on productivity improvement can be a little tricky… hopefully this episode will help.Source Material: No Bullsh!t Leadership Episode:Ep.115: Does Innovation Create Value?Ep.203: Defending Against Disruptive InnovationMcKinsey Global Institute Article:Turning Around the Productivity SlowdownDiary of a CEO EpisodeEp.252: Ex-Google Officer Speaks Out On the Dangers of AI————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #25: Why Management Teams Become Stale

Moment #25 // High-performance is fragile. Teams can lose their lustre for a whole range of reasons, and leading a team of high performers can be incredibly challenging. The best teams push each other pretty hard, and it can be difficult to maintain constructive tension, without it boiling over into acrimony. And, yes, sometimes your people just stop listening to you. Over time, familiarity breeds contempt, and the downside of consistency (a much sought-after leadership characteristic) is predictability. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.99: Don't Play One Season Too Many.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE:Want to boost your leadership capability? What the Best Leaders Do Differently with Scott J. Miller

Episode #254 // We’re approached all the time to interview other thought leaders on this podcast. However, since No Bullsh!t Leadership is predominantly a solo cast, we reluctantly decline 99% of these requests. But one email popped into our Inbox a few months ago, and we couldn’t resist it: Scott Jeffrey Miller is a speaker, author, and podcaster (sounds familiar, I know!) What’s different about Scott is that he’s worked for over 25 years with FranklinCovey, the legendary company started by Stephen Covey, which has not one, but three seminal works to draw upon:The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People The Speed of Trust, andThe 4 Disciplines of Execution (one of my favorites).Scott has worked with these original thought leaders for decades, and as host of FranklinCovey’s On Leadership podcast, he’s had access to some of the best-known and highest-profile leaders on the planet. In today’s interview, I drill into Scott’s deep learning, asking him what it’s like to interview the biggest names in business; his experience of writing best-selling books; and what’s in store for the future of leadership.Check out Scott's new book here!Connect with Scott on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottjeffreymiller/————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #24: The Risks Of Office Romances

Moment #24 // As a leader, how do you set appropriate boundaries in your work relationships? How do you strike the balance between establishing trust-based, caring relationships with your people, and maintaining professional distance? The social pendulum has really swung in the last 3-5 years. Organizations are increasingly seeking to impose themselves in the personal decisions of their people. As a leader, you need to be hyper-vigilant about how these shifting dynamics can potentially affect your career. Your role is to set the tone, the pace and the standard for your people, and being in a workplace relationship makes that so much more difficult. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.14: Friendly, Not Friends.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Lifters and Leaners: The contribution mentality

Episode #253 // In life, there tend to be two kinds of people: there are lifters and there are leaners. Lifters carry the burden for themselves and others… they take on more accountability than the average person, and they don’t rely on anyone else to make things happen. And leaners are happy to let them do so! In this episode, which I hope you find to be pretty straightforward and easy to absorb, my goal is to do just one thing: to explain the differences between lifters and leaners, and help you to clarify which one you are, right now.As a leader, you want the personal brand of being a lifter, not a leaner. Once you know the difference, the rest is up to you. Like everything in life, you get to choose your path, and make it happen… or not! I’ve also created a free PDF downloadable so that you can undertake a self-assessment which you can download here: Are you a lifter, or a leaner?Source Material: No Bullsh!t Leadership Episode:Ep.110: Getting In the ArenaMark Manson Article: The Most Important Question of Your Life————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #23: Mastering Your Mindset

Moment #23 // You don't want your business to suffer the impact of poor decisions that are driven by fear. If you can sense, and then short-circuit your physiological reactions as they arise, you’ll be in a better position to implement some coping strategies, rather than just letting nature take its course. If you learn to control your physical state, it opens up the pathways for your conscious mind to handle things. Once your response is in the conscious, you can ask yourself a series of questions that will help you to manage your fear by bringing greater perspective to the problem. Staying calm and rational is a prerequisite to making great decisions. Hard Lessons of the Ego: The pride before the fall

Episode #252 // Chris Licht, the former CEO of CNN, resigned recently after a scathing exposé in The Atlantic. What was supposed to be an opportunity to provide a firsthand account of a miraculous company turnaround, ended up in embarrassment, reputational damage, and the inevitable sacking. This isn’t the first time someone has invited the media to make a contemporaneous record of a firm’s excellence, only to have it backfire spectacularly! In the 1970s, British Steel was the subject of a documentary film which, instead of showcasing its leading edge management performance and industrial dominance, as had been expected, uncovered an unhealthy culture that made any aspirations of commercial excellence impossible. What causes leaders to believe their own bullsh!t? Why would they open themselves up to public scrutiny if they didn’t genuinely believe in their abilities, and the almost inevitable success of their mission? In this episode, I look at these two case studies, and dig into the root causes of hubris. Moment #22: Unmasking Reluctant Leaders

Moment #22 // Some people really don't want to lead. But they don’t necessarily know that they don’t want to. So, why would they take on a leadership role if they have no desire to lead? And how do you identify a reluctant leader? The clue is in the expectations they place upon their team? Do they lead them to greater heights, or just accept whatever an individual chooses to do on any given day? Weak leaders lower the standard to meet the performance, strong leaders lift the performance to meet the standard.Whatever you do, it’s important to set an expectation that all leaders do the hard work of leadership in their teams… even the reluctant ones. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.164: Leadership Not For You?.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability?
