HR Happy Hour 188 - Live from the NBA Summer League - Featuring The 8 Man Rotation Recorded Live from Las Vegas, Saturday July 19, 2014 Host: Steve Boese Guests: Kris Dunn, Lance Haun, Matt 'The Professor' Stollak This week on a very special HR Happy Hour Show, the guys from The 8 Man Rotation series of Ebooks on Sports and HR made their annual midsummer pilgrimage to Las Vegas to take in a few days of the Samsung NBA Summer League competition, catch a little music courtesy of Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails, and record a fun HR Happy Hour podcast over a few cheeseburgers. Steve and the boys talked basketball (of course), but also hit upon many of the angles that apply to non-sports contexts as well, and can be relevant to HR, talent management, and building teams of any kind. The NBA Summer League is one of the great, real-life experiments in talent management and development - you have players trying to learn and acclimate, coaches and on-court officials also trying to prove themselves, and you see played out how team executives talent management strategies manifest in how they try to build their teams. This was a really fun show, (apologies for the background music and the occasional interruption of the waiters), and many thanks to the guys for participating. HR Happy Hour 187 - 'LIVE Summer Special' Broadcast LIVE Thursday July 10, 2014 - 8:00PM EDT Hosts: Trish McFarlane, Steve Boese Back in the first few years of  he HR Happy Hour Show, Thursday nights at 8:00PM was the normal weekly day and time when the HR Happy Hour Show would broadcast live, and take calls, check out the #HRHappyHour backchannel on Twitter, and just enjoy hanging out (virtually) with the great HR community. So even though it has been a while since the HR Happy Hour Show has actually broadcast live, we thought it might be fun to occasionally bring back the live format and connect with the listeners, take a few calls, and have some fun on the back channel So this week the show will be going LIVE at 8:00PM EDT on Thursday July 10, 2014 to talk about some of the most interesting and challenging topics in HR, work, and the workplace and to take your calls as well. We will plan to hit a wide range of topics but most of all want to hear from you. So we hope you can join us on the show, back live for the first time in 2014.

HR Happy Hour 186 - 'A Look Back, A Look Forward' Recorded Monday, June 30, 2014 Hosts: Steve Boese, Trish McFarlane This week on the HR Happy Hour Show, hosts Steve and Trish talked about the recently concluded SHRM Annual Conference, shared some information about the session they delivered on HR Technology selection and evaluation, and looked back over the last few years of the HR Happy Hour Show. The mid-year timing, and with the 4th of July long weekend and holiday coming up made it a good time to reflect back a little on some of Steve and Trish's favorite shows, as well as talk about that the rest of 2014 has in store for the show. Also, new listeners to the HR Happy Hour Show can spend some time on the long weekend, (in between hamburgers and hot dogs), to dig back through the show archives and play on-demand some of the shows that Steve and Trish mentioned, including ones with guests like Dave Ulrich, Sherry Turkle, Matt Stillman, and more. HR Happy Hour 184 - Work and the Next Generation Leader Recorded Thursday May 22, 2014 Host: Steve Boese Guest: Lindsey Pollak This week on the HR Happy Hour Show, Steve caught up with bestselling author, and expert on Millennials in the workplace, Lindsey Pollak to talk about some of the most important developments and trends that are defining and impacting work and the workplace. The next generation of workers are already here - and increasingly these members of the millennial generation are assuming important and leadership roles in organizations. The smartest and most successful organizations are embracing these shifts in workplace composition and creating environments where millennial employees and leaders can make their mark in the workplace. Lindsey also had some great information to share about her work with The Hartford on how to better understand and plan for millennial leaderships and also shared some observations and recommendations for HR and talent leaders on how to best navigate these workforce changes. This was a fun and interesting conversation and many thanks to Lindsey and the folks at The Hartford for making the show so much fun.

HR Happy Hour 183 - Sports and HR with the 8 Man Rotation Recorded Thursday, May 15, 2014 Hosts: Steve Boese, Trish McFarlane Guests: Kris Dunn, Matt Stollak, Tim Sackett, Lance Haun Fantastic to have the entire crew from the 8 Man Rotation series of E-books on Sports and HR all together in the HR Happy Hour house to share some takes on the top sports issues of the day and their impact/relevance to work and workplaces everywhere. The 8 Man Crew hit a wide range of current sports topics - Donald Sterling, the NBA coaching turmoil, Michael Sam and the NFL's readiness for their first openly gay player, and even dipped in the world of college sports with a take on the unionization and payment of college athletes. Also, Steve shared his dark horse pick for the upcoming soccer World Cup, and as expected, we completely ignored the sport of hockey. Ultimate Software, across their thousands of customers, supports over 15 million people records in the cloud. Cecile shared with us one of the primary considerations that Ultimate takes into account when building software for so many people - the almost radically different expectations people have in their relationship with any technology. People's personal lives are filled with technologies that are adaptive, responsive, fun, engaging, and are also simple to use. Cecile shared the key things to consider: provide user value, hook users in early with a great experience, and be useful and help them get their jobs done.
