Her new book, Tired of Apologizing for a Church I Don't Belong To is generating international conversation about the changing religious landscape. It continues the theme of her 2013 book When ‘Spiritual But Not Religious’ Is Not Enough about the growing number of people who claim "none" as their religious preference. Guest Info/Bio: This week we cover a topic that is very important to us. We had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Stephen Hinshaw about the nature of stigma and mental health. Dr. Hinshaw grew up in our hometown of Columbus, Ohio and attended Harvard and UCLA. A professor of Psychology (UC Berkley) and Psychiatry (UC San Francisco), he is an international presence in clinical psychology/mental health, with over 320 articles/chapters and 12 books. He received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2001; his Teaching Company (‘Great Lecture’) series, “Origins of the Human Mind,” appeared in 2010. He has been recognized as the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology (2015), the James McKeen Cattell Award from the Association for Psychological Science (2016) for a lifetime of outstanding contributions to applied psychological research, and the Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Child Development Award (2017) from the Society for Research in Child Development. He lives in Berkley, California, with his wife Kelly Campbell; they have three sons. His newest book, “Another Kind of Madness,” chronicles his father’s recurring mental illness and the doctor-enforced silence surrounding it, plus the huge need to combat stigma. Guest Info/Bio: This week we speak with Jonathan Wilson Hartgrove! Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove is a celebrated spiritual writer and sought-after speaker. A native of North Carolina, he is a graduate of Eastern University and Duke Divinity School. In 2003, Jonathan and his wife Leah founded the Rutba House, a house of hospitality where the formerly homeless are welcomed into a community that eats, prays, and shares life together. Jonathan directs the School for Conversion, a nonprofit that has grown out of the life of Rutba House to pursue beloved community with kids in their neighborhood, through classes in North Carolina prisons, and in community-based education around the country. Jonathan is also an Associate Minister at the historically black St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church. An evangelical Christian who connects with the broad spiritual tradition and its monastic witnesses, Jonathan is a leader in the New Monasticism movement. He speaks often about emerging Christianity to churches and conferences across the denominational spectrum and has given lectures at dozens of universities, including Calvin College, Bethel University, Duke University, Swarthmore College, St. John’s University, DePaul University, and Baylor University. This week we are thrilled to bring you our interview with Dr. Michio Kaku! Dr. Michio Kaku is the co-creator of string field theory, a branch of string theory. He received a B.S. (summa cum laude) from Harvard University in 1968 where he came first in his physics class. He went on to the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley and received a Ph.D. in 1972. In 1973, he held a lectureship at Princeton University. Michio continues Einstein’s search for a “Theory of Everything,” seeking to unify the four fundamental forces of the universe—the strong force, the weak force, gravity and electromagnetism. He is the author of several scholarly, Ph.D. level textbooks and has had more than 70 articles published in physics journals, covering topics such as superstring theory, supergravity, supersymmetry, and hadronic physics. He holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York (CUNY), where he has taught for over 25 years. He has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, as well as New York University (NYU). Kaku has starred in a myriad of science programming for television including Discovery, Science Channel, BBC, ABC, and History Channel. Beyond his numerous bestselling books, he has also been a featured columnist for top popular science publications such as Popular Mechanics, Discover, COSMOS, WIRED, New Scientist, Newsweek, and many others. Dr. Kaku was also one of the subjects of the award-winning documentary, ME & ISAAC NEWTON by Michael Apted. He is a news contributor to CBS:This Morning and is a regular guest on news programs around the world including CBS, Fox News, CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, RT. Guest Bio: This week we have the great honor of speaking with the legendary John Dominic Crossan! Dr. Crossan is one of the preeminent New Testament scholars and historian of early Christianity. He is known for his contemporary historical Jesus research and he has written both popular and academic books on an array of topics. Dr. Crossan received his Doctor of Divinity at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, the Irish national seminary and completed two additional years of study in biblical languages at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He completed two additional years of study in archeology at the Ecole Biblique in Jordanian East Jerusalem. He served as co-chair of the Jesus Seminar and also served as president of the Chicago Society of Biblical Research from 1978-1979, and as president of the Society of Biblical Literature in 2012. Guest Bio: This week we speak with Kester Brewin! Kester is a mathematics teacher known as one of the leading thinkers in philosophy of religion and technology. The power of his work lies in the synthesis of ideas from disparate fields, playing the history of piracy off a psychotherapeutic reading of Star Wars, or pushing Harry Potter to play alongside both Batman and Shakespeare’s Prospero. Accessible, challenging and richly rewarding, his work has been hailed on both sides of the Atlantic as some of the most courageous and unflinching theological writing of recent years, charting his own path from the orthodox belief of his childhood to a radical death-of-God reading of Christian atheism. He is a sought-after speaker, and has presented at festivals throughout mainland Europe, the UK and the US. In 2013 he presented at the prestigious TEDx Exeter event on his work exploring our enduring fascination with pirates. He has also written and presented for BBC Radio 4, and is a regular contributor on technology in the Huffington Post.
