#122 – Father Abraham
Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley continue their discussion in the book of Romans by looking at Romans 4:1-8.Questions Covered in This Episode:So the church hears that everyone is broken and everyone has fallen short and Paul predicts the question from the Jewish Christians: What about Abraham? What role did Abraham play in Israel’s story? Why invoke his name here?Paul pulls Abraham into the justification question: Why?What did Abraham believe? (V.3)Let’s talk about the fundamental difference between faith and works. Talk about “gift” language...Then we get a David name drop (V.6): What was David’s significance in Israel’s story? Why is invoking his name a big deal?Helpful Definitions:Unmerited Gift: You cannot earn it, undeserved, or incongruent: doesn’t line up with what you have done, its disproportionate. Once we have received this grace that we do not deserve and we cannot earn it’s supposed to have an impact on us. Its unconditional but not without hope for impact or reciprocity.Unconditional Gift: A gift given without any conditions.Righteous -> Blessed: To have one’s lawless deeds forgiven, sins covered, and that the Lord will not count your sin against you.Resources Mentioned in This Episode:Romans 4:1-8, Genesis 15:6, Romans 5:1, Romans 6:1-2, Galatians 3:3-9, Matthew 20:1-16, Psalm 32:1-2, Psalm 130:3Knowing Faith Romans EpisodesKnowing Faith Michael Kruger EpisodesAmazon affiliate links are used where appropriate. Kyle Worley is joined by Dr. Gregg Allison to answer the question, did Martin Luther have anything to say about the righteousness of God in Romans?Questions Covered in This Episode:Did Martin Luther have anything to say about the righteousness of God in Romans?Outside of the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit, was there anything that was happening at a linguistic or a theological level in Luther’s understanding of the concept that was the key to that discovery? How did that change happen?Helpful Definitions:Justice of God: God’s wrath and condemnation towards sinners.Righteousness of God: A gift that God gives to sinners who repent, confess Christ, turn to Christ through the gospel. A gift of perfect standing before God. God’s gift of the righteousness of Christ by which we can stand before him.Justification: Divine declaration. We are no longer condemned or guilty, we are forgiven of our sins and the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ is attributed to us. So God when he sees us, sees us clothed in the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ. The Sweet Exchange: Our sin is imputed to Christ, Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us.Guest Bio:Dr. Gregg Allison is a professor of Christian Theology at Southern Seminary.
