Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley come back to one of their most popular topics; brothers and sisters.Questions Covered in This Episode:Indisputably: This is something we get more feedback on than just about anything else…why is that? How has the culture shift affected this conversation? What has been the church's response to the shift in culture? What does the biblical doctrine of anthropology related to men and women have to affirm? When we say “we need each other,” what does that mean? What are the threats and liabilities of relationships? What about not having these relationships? Why are we using family-oriented language in this conversation?Does this apply to those who are not believers? How has this changed us? How has it changed our ministries? Why is getting this right crucial?Helpful Definitions:Adelphoi (ἀδελφοί): Brothers and sisters. The family of God.Philia: A kind of love that exists only among family, not just biologically but spiritually through the blood of Christ.Resources Mentioned in This Episode:Crossway: Women of the Word“Jesus through the Eyes of Women” by Rebecca McLaughlinSponsors:Are you ready to take your next step in theological training? #176 – Salvation: Regeneration

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley continue their discussion on the doctrine of salvation by talking about the doctrine of regeneration.Questions Covered in This Episode:What’s a doctrine? When we say “doctrine of salvation,” what do we mean? What is election? What is effectual calling? What is regeneration? When the Bible is talking about the heart, what is it talking about? What are other ways the Bible talks about this? How has the language of being “born again” changed? When does regeneration happen? What is the result of regeneration? Where does it lead?Helpful Definitions:Doctrine: A christian belief. Something we believe the Bible says to be true. Organizes and summarizes what the Bible teaches.Election: Before the foundation of the world God predestined, or set apart for himself, a people that He will secure their salvation.Doctrine of Salvation: How God saves his people.Effectual Calling: The specific work the the Spirit of God making an effectual impact in our hearts.Regeneration: When the heart that we have been given by nature is replaced with a new heart.Resources Mentioned in This Episode:Ephesians 2:1, Ezekiel 36-37, John 3Crossway: Women of the WordEpisode #174 – Salvation: ElectionEpisode #176 – Salvation: CallingSponsors:Considering your calling and how to grow in your knowledge of the Bible? Season 9 Patreon Q&A

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley answer questions submitted from their patron supporters! To learn more and become a patron visit patreon.com/trainingthechurch.Questions Covered in This Episode:If we understand that Jesus, in His spiritual body, sits at the right hand of the Father after His ascension. How do we resolve the tension this presents to God's unchanging nature if before His ascension it was not Jesus in His spiritual body, particularly, but the Son of God that was at the Father's right hand? When reading the Psalms there often references to statutes, ordinances, laws, testimonies, commandments, and precepts given by God. Is there a significant difference in the meaning of these different words?I would love to hear each of you discuss the relationship between small groups and learning environments in your respective churches. How can these two spaces best complement one another without feeling competitive? What does a typical week look like for everyone (work, church, family, fun, rest time)?Would love your thoughts on good questions to explore with a teen in my home as we discuss this: Adam's sin resulted in all humanity being born with a sin nature and without Christ we 'can't not sin'. He believes it would've been more just for God to give each individual person a 'fruit on the tree' moment before they automatically 'receive' a sinful nature. In his view, we talk about someone who isn't a Christian choosing to sin, and yet at the same time, we believe that their nature is that they can't actually choose something different. This seems so contradictory to him. If God really wanted to give us a choice, why did he set us up to not be able to choose him first? Not us as in all humanity, but us as individuals. He doesn't think that 'we're human so we'd always fail' makes sense, because the reason that is true is because of the sin nature...so if it wasn't for that, we wouldn't necessarily fail.On the doctrine of simplicity: Is god wrath? I've heard God is love but has wrath. But is wrathful an attribute of God? If wrath is an attribute, then, in the new heavens and new earth, after judgement day, what is that wrath directed towards?"How did women in the OT share in the sign of the covenant?" How can something as important as the sign of the covenant between God's people could be reserved to something only men could do (aka. circumcision) and what if baptism as the sign of the new covenant was restricted to only men. Were women being left out of an essential part of what it meant to be in a relationship with God and his covenant people. Do y'all have any thoughts on this that might help resolve that tension?Often, we hear about heated conversations related to women as pastors but we never hear such discussions about single male pastors. But, of course Paul writes about singleness as something he recommends to the church. Was that only intended for his specific context? Or is it biblically unfaithful to exclusively have married men with families in pastoral or deacon roles?I have been focusing on Luke, and was freshly moved by the references to Mary treasuring up different revelations/experiences with Jesus (the shepherds visit after the angel of the Lord appearing to them and Jesus calling the temple his Father's house). Would it be appropriate to consider Luke as connecting Mary's experience with Psalm 119:11?Why is Ephesians off limits?Jen referred to Psalm 139 as the “lady Psalm,” - I’m wondering why she called it that? What are your takes on celebrating Christmas by incorporating Santa Claus and on celebrating Halloween. How do you go about making those decisions and giving grace to those who differ? If you could wave a magic wand, how would you organize a local church? What are the first three ministries you would focus on establishing in addition to the Sunday gathering?Kyle you have recommended several sci-fi or fantasy books or authors through the seasons. So far I have really enjoyed all of your recommendations could you make some more? The 6th command is “Do not Murder.” Why were the Israelites multiple times commanded to kill whole nations women and children? What obscure or lesser known and taught passages of the Bible are some of your favorites and deserve more notice? What about prophets/prophecy today? Is prophet a current office? What is a prophet today, or what is prophecy today? Can just anyone prophecy? Does any of it exist now?Considering recently the implications of The Father as the one who sends, I'm seeing James 1:17 in a new light. The Father is the one who sent Jesus, sends the Spirit, ... and is the direct sender of blessings? Is that what I should be taking away here? So a quick, heartfelt "Thank you, Jesus!" upon receipt of rain, provision, etc, may not be the best expression of gratitude, when it should be "Thank you, Father!"? Are we robbing God the Father of the worship due Him when we attribute His goodness to Christ? Are there other ways you can think of that we commonly misdirect worship to one person of the Godhead when it is deserved by the other (or ascribe it only to One when it should be to all Three)?Helpful Definitions:Prophet: Speaking on behalf of God.prophet: In tune with the Holy Spirit wanting to build up the life of the church.Resources Mentioned in This Episode:Psalm 119:1-8, Psalm 19:7-9, Genesis 3:15-16, Luke 2:8-19, Luke 2:48-51, Psalm 119:11, Psalm 139, Kings 25, Exodus 1:15-21, Numbers 27:1-11, 1 Samuel 28, James 1:17The Chalcedonian Creed“Santa, Strategically” by Jen Wilkin“Lord of the Rings” by J.R.R. #175 – Salvation: Calling

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley continue their discussion on the doctrine of salvation with a conversation about calling.Questions Covered in This Episode:Is there a difference between the general call of the gospel and “effectual calling?” If so, what is the difference? What is the purpose of the general call if not everyone responds to it?Where would we look to find this in scripture? When does the effectual calling happen? Who does the work of effectual calling? What would you say to someone who doesn’t have a specific moment they can point to where they were “saved”?Why is the doctrine of effectual calling good news?Helpful Definitions:General Calling: The gospel goes forward indiscriminately to all people. The external work of proclamation.Particular Calling: Specific to those who respond to the gospel effectually. God the Father will call people to the Son, those who are elect, by the power of the Holy Spirit and actually effect salvation in them. New affections to bring about transformation of heart, soul, mind, and strength to love Jesus with everything they have. The internal work of salvation. The Ordo Salutis (The Order of Salvation): Regeneration, Faith, Repentance, Justification, Adoption, Sanctification, Perseverance, Glorification.Resources Mentioned in This Episode:Genesis 12:1-3, Romans 8:28-30, Romans 10:14-17, John 6:60-71, Matthew 13The Gospel Coalition Conference: Code: KNOWINGFAITHCrossway: Women of the WordSponsors:Considering your calling and how to grow in your knowledge of the Bible? #173 – Salvation: Election

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley discuss the doctrine of salvation. They narrow in specifically on the doctrine of election, what is election and why is it good news?Questions Covered in This Episode:Before we answer the question, what has God done to make things right we have to answer what went wrong? What is the practicality of this for my life? What is “election?”What is the temptation that people tend to have when they are new to reformed theology?Where would we go in scripture to explore the doctrine of election? Why doesn’t God save everybody? How do you speak to a person who has lost a loved one who is not a believer? Is God trustworthy? Is God loving? Why is the doctrine of election good news?Helpful Definitions:Pactum Salutis: Pact to save. God before the foundation of the world made a pact of Father, Son, and Spirit to interact with a fallen world as Father, Son, and Spirit. The Father is the one who sends, the Son is the one who is sent, and the Spirit is the one who will applies salvation after the Son accomplishes it.Providence: God’s will at work in the world.Election: God’s sovereign activity in saving his people before the foundation of the world.Resources Mentioned in This Episode:Ephesians 1:4, Romans 8-11, Genesis 12:1-3, Galatians 3:6The Gospel Coalition Conference: Code: KNOWINGFAITHKnowing Faith: Doctrine of Sin Episodes“Humble Calvinism” by Jeff MeddersKnowing Faith Episode #39 - Humble Calvinsism with Jeff Medders“Chosen by God” by R.C. Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley answer listeners' questions!Questions Covered in This Episode:Is it necessary to categorize God’s attributes as communicable v.s. Incommunicable? It seems like the incommunicable attributes are just communicable attributes cranked up?Has Kyle gotten any better at brushing his teeth? How would you interpret John 14:28 in light of the Trinity? How essential is formal ministry training versus experience/time for lay leaders? What was a highlight of 2022 for each of you? Would love an update from each of you personally and professionally too: Any new projects or adventures in 2023?What is the number one concern on your heart for the church as we head into a new year? What is a song (or a lyric from a song) in the advent season that resonates in a meaningful or impactful way in your life and heart, as you reflect on the birth of Christ? Can you know God without knowing the attributes of God? Should a believer be able to name His attributes? Is there now a difference between the people of Israel and the elect? Or are the elect now considered God’s chosen people?Any chance you will spend more time on Calvinism in the future? The topic scares a lot of people, including myself, but I’m wondering if I should continue to go to a church that believes this, even if I don’t?Is it heretical or heterodox when one does not believe in the Trinity but in modalism (think Oneness Pentecostals)? Why are you guys so awesome?Years ago I had a friend in the psychiatric profession and He said some individuals are pure evil–this leads to my question: Is possession by demons, evil spirits, still occurring?Helpful Definitions:Nestorianism: Overemphasizes the two natures of the Son and essentially separates them.Resources Mentioned in This Episode:John 14:28, John 13-17, John 3, Genesis 3, 1 Peter 5:8“None Like Him” by Jen Wilkin“In His Image” by Jen Wilkin“O Come all Ye Faithful”“Hark! #170 – Doctrine of God Roundup with Dr. Matthew Barrett

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley are joined by Matthew Barrett to discuss some big picture ideas on the Doctrine of God. Questions Covered in This Episode:Why did you write “None Greater?”Is an attribute of God something God has or something God is?What do we lose if we lose the Divine Simplicity of God?When we talk about some of these attributes, love for example, how does saying that God is love or that God loves not challenge the doctrine of impassibility? Does God have an emotional life? If not, then how does saying “God loves you” mean anything? What do we do with language that seems to communicate that God is passionate? Can you give a brief explanation of the doctrine of the eternal functional subordination of the Son and what you think of it?Why do you find this view concerning?Helpful Definitions:Divine Simplicity: The incomprehensible God we are speaking of is without parts, His essence is His attributes and His attributes is His essence.Pure Actuality: God is so alive and complete and therefore, never has to be changed, acted upon or moved. He is life without measure.Passive Potency: We have potential that has to be activated in order to be brought to completion.Theistic Mutualism, Theistic Personalism, Mono Polytheism: Describing the God of modern theology in broad strokes. This God is one but not all that different from gods in polytheistic religions. These are gods that might feel comforting to us at first but not that we would worship in the endImmutable: From eternity past to eternity future God is unchanging. God is always the same.Aseity: God is a se, or has aseity: He is self-existent and self-sufficient.Impassibility: God is without passions.Passions: Exist whenever a finite creature is acted upon by, effected by, or even changed by something external to ourself; a change occurs within that moves you.Eternal Functional Subordination: The way we should think of the trinity is in terms of roles and relationships of hierarchy, authority, and submission. The Father has greater authority and power than the Son (Still equal in essence). The Holy Spirit is functionally lower still.Guest Bio:Dr. Matthew Barrett is Associate Professor of Christian Theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is also the founder and executive editor of Credo Magazine. He is the author of numerous books including: Simply Trinity: The Unmanipulated Father, Son, and Spirit, None Greater: The Undomesticated Attributes of God and God’s Word Alone: The Authority of Scripture.Resources Mentioned in This Episode:John 4, Isaiah 40-45, 1 John, 1 Samuel 15, Philippians 2“None Greater” by Matthew Barrett“Confessions” by Saint AugustineNicene Creed“Does God Suffer?” by Thomas WeinandyWestminster ConfessionLondon Baptist of Faith“The Impassable God of the Bible: Replying to Some Objections” by Wesley Hill“Simply Trinity” by Matthew BarrettAmazon affiliate links are used where appropriate.
