"Please do not do this!" - Trainee Vicars Speak Out
Church of England revs with a difference Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down with "orthodox ordinand" Anna Mayo, one of the two leaders of the group of 78 trainee vicars who this week have petitioned the Church of England House of Bishops to desist in their attempts to move the church away from orthodoxy in the areas of marriage and human sexuality. In a wide-ranging conversation, we consider the long-term consequences of the proposed liberalisation of the Church's teaching and practice and we review a recent letter of dissent, signed by twelve bishops, which expresses concern that the proposed course of action is divisive, unorthodox and that it is being pushed through without regard to the obligations of good and proper governance. After that we select interesting issues from the week: Jamie reviews the unfolding controversy around the University and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) and Daniel follows up on some Twitter exchanges on Israel that came after the release of the episode last week. That and much much more as ever!To contact Anna: orthodoxordinands@gmail.comPlease Support!Support us on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/irreverend) or Buy Me a Coffee (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/irreverend). That All Must Be Decarbonised
Church of England revs with a difference Jamie Franklin and Daniel French sit down to talk about the big stories of the week in church and state. We revisit the Russell Brand saga with particular reference to Caroline Dinenage MP's attempt to have every major platform demonetise and eject Brand. We get Daniel's take on the whole thing and talk about Brand's idiosyncratic form of New Age religiosity. After that we talk about men who identify as dogs, Rishi Sunak's decision to water down certain green policies, environmentalist Chris Packham's intention to break certain but unspecified laws and the Bishop of Norwich decision to go full-on green fundamentalist as he declares that "decarbonisation must permeate every aspect of our lives". We look at a Spectator article delving into the issue of what makes churches grow or shrink (hint: if you like the show, the answer is probably what exactly you think it is) and a halt to the proposed conversation therapy ban. Toxic Brand?
Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the most pressing issues of the day. This time, we consider the allegations made against the actor and comedian Russell Brand. Are these allegations plausible or are they merely a calculated attack on Brand by a system that would rather he was discredited and destroyed? We also talked about the implications of the sexual revolution in contrast to the Christian understanding of sex within marriage and the insufficiency of consent as an absolute standard for sexual relationships. In our new section Peak CofE we review Exeter Cathedral's decision to appoint a "Canon Scientist" to further educate the dean and chapter on the dangers posed by climate change. And we follow up on the tragic and disturbing story of teenager ST who died of a heart attack last week after being told she could not go to Canada to seek life-saving treatment by the NHS and being deemed of not sufficient mental capacity to make decisions about the end of her own life. That and much much as always! Please Support!Support us on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/irreverend) or Buy Me a Coffee (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/irreverend). Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham, Jamie Franklin and Daniel French get together to review the week's big talking points. This time: the shocking case of an anonymous girl in an NHS hospital whose life support is going to be turned off against her wishes, Daniel's piece in The Conservative Woman in which he considers a hypothetical future in which the Archbishop of Canterbury resisted the Covid tyranny, Louise Perry says that we are repaganising but doesn't this mean that we should become Christian again? That, a few emails and a question the rev about young people and higher education these days plus all the usual banter and extras that are always in there somewhere. Please Support!Support us on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/irreverend) or Buy Me a Coffee (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/irreverend). Clergy Crack-Ups
Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the recent survey in The Times which appears to show that the majority of clergy in the Church of England favour progressive liberalisation in areas such as gay relationships and women's ordination. More than that it also reveals a picture of a worn-out church that is declining and is staffed by overworked and tired-out priests. We consider this survey in-depth as it touches on a number of themes that have been relevant to this podcast throughout.A total gear-change for Question the Rev as we answer a query about the nation state of Israel and how it relates to the Christian Church. That and much much more as ever! Please Support!Support us on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/irreverend) or Buy Me a Coffee (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/irreverend). Skip Church and Pray for the Lionesses
Church of England revs with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the major events of this week.Amongst other things, we discussed the Church's somewhat questionable response to the Sunday scheduling of the Women's World Cup final: Is it really the right message to tell people that it's fine to skip church to watch it? And what are the wider implications of using women's football as a vehicle of social change? A former scientific advisor to the government says that the falling birth rare in the UK are a good thing. And the revolving door between government and Big Pharma as former government scientific advisor Jonathan Van Tam takes a senior role at Moderna. That, a Question the Rev on Bible study guides, and emails on an Orthodox perspective on just war and Sainsbury's selling occult magazines. Please Support!Support us on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/irreverend) or Buy Me a Coffee (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/irreverend).
