Jackie Carson
Our Great Coach on this episode is basketball coach, Jackie Carson.Jackie Carson is the Head Coach of the Furman University Women's Basketball team. She also played there as a student athlete, and still hold the conference record for most free throws made. In 1999 she was honored as Furman’s Female Athlete of the Year and in 2009 she became on the third player in the programs history to have their jersey retired.She started her coaching career in 2003, progressing through Assistant Coaching Positions at Bucknell and Madison which included postseason appearances at the 2007 and 2010 NCAA tournaments.In 2010, she returned to Furman as the 9th Head Coach in the college’s history. Across her 11 seasons leading the team they have earned four postseason berths and 2 Women’s National Invitational Tournament appearances.In 2014 she recognised for her contribution to the sport by being awarded Conference Coach of the Year.Key topics she discusses with us include: As a woman, female coaches have to be better than the males going for the same job, and importantly show why they're better. Mark Coles
Our Great Coach on this episode is cricket coach, Mark Coles.Mark grew up playing competitive level cricket in New Zealand. He then started coaching both men’s and women’s teams progressing to being appointed High Performance Manager for the pacific island nation of Vanuatu in 2010. He then became the head coach for Scarborough Cricket Club in Western Australia, before moving back to New Zealand to be the coaching coordinator and specialist coach for the Wellington Blaze in the new, national T20 league. In 2017, he was appointed head coach of the Pakistan women's national cricket team. During this time Pakistan won nine of the 28 Women's One Day Internationals, and 12 of their 30 Women's Twenty20 International matches, and also finished fifth in the 2017–20 ICC Women's Championship.He left in 2019 to spend more time with his family and in 2021 was appointed head coach of the Scottish women’s cricket team. Bill Snyder
Our Great Coach on this episode is legendary American Football Coach, Bill Snyder.Bill started his coaching career in 1966. In 1979 he became the offensive coordinator under Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry at the University of Iowa. Over the next 10 years, he and Fry turned a program that had not had a winning season since 1961, into a two-time Big Ten champion.In 1989, he became the 32nd head coach of Kansas State University. He would go on to coach them for 25 seasons. In this time, he would lead them to more than 200 wins, 18 bowl games, and two Big 12 championships.The development of the Kansas State program is considered the greatest turnaround in college football history. Alana Thomas
Our Great Coach on this episode is rugby's Alana Thomas.Alana was the 88th player capped to play for the Australian Women’s Rugby team, the Wallaroos representing them between 2006 to 2010.She then transitioned into coaching, progressing through coaching club and state representative teams. Winning the Victorian premiership with Melbourne Unicorns in 2017. An achievement that led to her winning the Rugby Australia Community Coach of the year.In 2017 she was appointed coach of the Melbourne Rebels team in new National competition, the Super W, and she is still in that role today. Peter Moores
Our Great Coach on this episode is Peter Moores.Peter had a long first class career as a wicket keeper with Worcestershire and Sussex, and retired in 1998 with over 800 dismissals to his name.He became coach of Sussex in 1999, and led them to their first ever Division 1 Championship in their 164 year history in 2003. Salliann Briggs
Our Great Coach on this episode is Salliann Briggs.Salliann has represented England Women's cricket at U17, U19 and U21 level. Joe Prunty
Our Great Coach on this episode is Joe Prunty.Joe is an American professional basketball coach with 22 years’ experience in the NBA. He was a High School coach who joined the San Antonio Spurs as a an assistant video coordinator in 1996, progressing quickly to be an Assistant Coach under the legendary Head Coach Greg Popovich in 2000. In his time with the Spurs they won 3 NBA championships.Joe has also coached with Cleveland, Portland, Dallas, Milwaukee and Phoenix. Jan Kodeš
Our Great Coach on this episode is Jan Kodeš.Jan is a former professional tennis player and coach.He won a total of 25 international singles and 31 doubles tournaments, the highlights were singles victories at the 1970 and 71 French Open and Wimbledon in 1973.In 1980 he was part of the winning Czechoslovakian Davis Cup team that featured Ivan Lendl, Tomáš Šmíd and Pavel Složil.From 1982-87 he was the non-playing Davis Cup captain. Dorette Badenhorst
Our Great Coach on this episode is Dorette Badenhorst.Dorette is the head coach of the South African Netball team, the SPAR Proteas.She started her coaching journey at 13 coaching grassroots tennis with her father.Whilst working as a Teacher at Auckland Park Primary School, she started coaching the schools Netball teams.At University, Dorette was selected to play for the South African Under-21 team. In 2012, she was appointed Head Coach of North West University (NWU) winning the Varsity Netball title back to back in 2015 and 2016. Billy Walsh
Our Great Coach on this episode is Billy Walsh. Billy is the current head coach of the USA Boxing team. He started boxing at age seven in a Christian Brothers gym in Wexford Ireland. He went on to win seven Irish Senior titles, participated in European and World Championships and represented his country as a welterweight in the 1988 Olympics. He then transitioned into coaching and was appointed Irish Head Coach in 2003. He was the head coach for 12 years and from 2008 to 2014 the team won 7 Olympic medals, at that point it was 25% of all Olympic medals Ireland has ever won. In 2015 and again in 2016 he won the Amateur International Boxing Associations World Coach of the Year. In 2015 he was appointed head coach of USA Boxing, and was charged with returning the program to its prior glory. So far this century only 1 male and 1 female boxer has won gold at the Olympics this century, despite the fact that American boxing is the most decorated program in Olympic history and produced champions like Cassius Clay, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Leonard, Spinks, and Oscar De La Hoya.
