Lighter bikes are faster up hills - that's pretty much a fact. And, when the goal is to get to the top of the hill as fast as humanly possible - i.e. during a hill climb race - getting a bike as light as possible is vital. Joe and Jack, from the BikeRadar team are aficionados of the hill climb bike - over the years they've competed nationally at hill climbs, with their bikes weighing around the 5kg mark. The infamous cobblestones of Paris-Roubaix have led many teams and riders to experiment wildly throughout the races long history, but we’ve also seen plenty of winners riding relatively normal bikes too. In the autumn we headed to the Boardman Performance Centre, where they’ve built a bike-specific wind tunnel, that’s open to the public. We wanted to find free and cheap ways to cut our time in a 100 mile sportive, using the data provided by the wind tunnel. After our time there, we sat down with Barney Wainright, Head of Science to talk through our results.
