RANE PODCAST: China’s New Initiatives in the Taiwan Strait

In recent weeks China has launched a series of initiatives that alter the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. First, China altered a civilian flight path to come mere kilometers next to the median line, the de facto dividing line between the entities, and added two more flights along a similar trajectory. Second, China's coast guard announced it will make full use of its legal jurisdiction around the Taiwanese islands of Kinmen. These developments carry implications for both Taiwan's airspace and territorial waters. Nate Fischler, RANE’s Asia-Pacific Analyst, shares his insights into the implications of these initiatives.  RANE is a global risk intelligence company that delivers risk and security professionals access to critical insights, analysis and support to ensure business continuity and resilience for our clients. Von der Leyen’s Bid for a Second Term in Brussels

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has formally launched her bid for a second term at the helm of the European Union’s executive, seeking to run as the center-right European People’s Party’s lead candidate in the upcoming EU elections in June. Von der Leyen kicked off her campaign pledging to improve the EU’s defense capabilities, improve its competitiveness and pursue its transition to climate neutrality. And while she does appear to have the necessary political support for another 5 year-term in Brussels, her eventual second spell as Commission President may look markedly different from the first one as the center of gravity of European politics continues to shift further to the right. In this episode of Essential Geopolitics, RANE’s Europe Analyst, Matteo Ilardo explains what this bid means for the short and long-term future of the European Union.  RANE is a global risk intelligence company that delivers risk and security professionals access to critical insights, analysis and support to ensure business continuity and resilience for our clients.
