Edition No29 | 14-12-2023 The certainty of Putin’s re-election calls into question for many the very terminology of ‘elections’ – of ‘competition’, ‘running’ and ‘winning’. The Kremlin has made the playing field unlevel in so many ways over so many years that the language of a presidential ‘coronation’ might be more appropriate. Indeed, Dmitry Peskov – Putin’s press secretary – admitted to the New York Times that the ‘presidential election is not really democracy, it is costly bureaucracy’, with Putin to be ‘re-elected next year with more than 90 per cent of the vote’. Russian society has, according to Peskov, consolidated itself so firmly around Putin that the outcome is beyond doubt, making the election itself theoretically obsolete, even though it will go ahead. Liquidating $300bn in frozen Russian assets, could provide more funds for Ukraine. Western allies are running short of cash, but they could help release billions and hurt Putin’s war effort at the same time. Confiscation would also be a lawful act of self-defence. Article 51 of the UN charter recognises the right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a UN member. Russia’s aggression has an obvious economic impact on Ukraine via attacks on such things as energy, exports, civil infrastructure and economic facilities. In 2022, Ukraine’s GDP decreased by 29.1%. In order to continue defending itself, Ukraine should be able to access frozen Russian assets to correct this imbalance caused by the Russian invasion. They supported Russia’s occupation of Crimea, and some voted against condemning Russian war crimes. The official organizer of the protest at the Ukrainian-Polish border crossings is Rafał Mekler, the owner of the transportation company Rafał Mekler Transport. Edition No27 | 08-12-2023 A branch of the pro-Russian organization "Other Ukraine," founded by the exiled Ukrainian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk, was registered in Serbia. Medvedchuk, who was long thought to be Russian dictator Putin’s right-hand man in Ukraine, was charged with high treason and placed under house arrest in 2021, only to flee as Russia launched its full-scale invasion. He was subsequently re-arrested in April 2022. In September, he was handed over to Russia as part of a prisoner exchange. The Serbian branch of the organization is headed by Dragan Stanojevic, a Serbian politician and public figure known for his pro-Russian, anti-Ukrainian views. Zaluzhnyi is right. The front line across Ukraine has become static, and taking territory is becoming harder and harder for both sides. 2. The main reason Ukraine finds itself in this position is because it wasn't given the weapons it needed to change the game before the war settled into this positional tussle. 3. While it remains taboo to admit, it’s now nearly impossible to deny that the West, in particular Washington, does not want a complete Ukrainian victory. 4. The West’s unwillingness to empower a Ukrainian victory is no clearer than in the issue of providing long-range missiles. 5. Ukraine’s war effort depends most of all on Washington, where bipartisan support for Ukraine is openly faltering in Congress, and a presidential election could bring it all down. 6. Even if Western military support continues to trickle in, Ukraine cannot fight a war at this intensity on its own forever. 7. The high cost of war on both sides means eventual peace negotiations are not unthinkable, but discussions about them usually get everything wrong. 8. Russia’s mission to destroy independent Ukraine hasn’t changed. Moscow has little left to lose, and its strategy of tiring out the West is slowly working. 9. To end the war with an independent Ukraine, the West must provide honest answers to two questions. Vatnik soup is a Twitter thread series where Pekka Kallioniemi introduces pro-Russian actors and propagandists from around the world. This includes so-called “independent journalists”, politicians, military personnel and of course just regular grifters looking to make money. The series has introductions and deeper insights on how online propaganda and disinformation works and is spread. There are now 200 Vatnik soups, which introduce bad actors along with the strategies they employ to pollute the information space.
