That in fact, a civil war took place in Ukraine 10 years ago, and the residents of Donbass simply wanted to secede, they wanted independence from Kyiv. And the bloody Kiev regime came and began to destroy Donbass in response. Where have you been for eight years? Asked during the start of the Russian full-scale invasion two years ago? Olena Tregub is a Ukrainian expert in policy analysis, policy design and reform implementation, with a special focus on corruption prevention in economic and security sectors. Since 2017 Olena has been Secretary General of NAKO (the Independent Defence Anti-Corruption Committee) – an international oversight body created by Transparency International. It’s her mission to strengthen democratic oversight over defence spending, increase accountability and transparency of the sector, which is critical in wartime, and has become a hotly debated topic in the run-up to the 2024 US election. Before joining the Ukrainian government, Olena built her career abroad in journalism, policy analysis, education, and international development. But will the Western allies mobilize too late to halt the rise of the authoritarians? ---------- Garry Kasparov is a Russian pro-democracy leader, global human-rights activist, business speaker and author, and former world chess champion. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, in the Soviet Union in 1963, Garry Kasparov came to international fame at the age of 22 as the youngest world chess champion in history in 1985. He defended his title five times, including a legendary series of matches against arch-rival Anatoly Karpov. His famous matches against the IBM super-computer Deep Blue in 1996-97 were key to bringing artificial intelligence, and chess, into the mainstream. In 2005, Kasparov retired from professional chess to join the vanguard of the Russian pro-democracy movement. In 2012, Kasparov was named chairman of the New York-based Human Rights Foundation, succeeding Vaclav Havel.
