Iryna Baturevych is a co-founder of the Chytomo media project (NGO), the Ukrainian independent media covering publishing and contemporary literary and cultural processes in Ukraine. Together with the Chytomo team, she organized the Ukrainian Chytomo Award for the Outstanding Achievements in Publishing. The publishing markets observer. In 2022, she co-founded the Ukrainian Club of Montreal. Iryna is a deputy director and a head of the analytical department of the Ukrainian Book Institute, guest teacher of the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University. Iryna presented the Ukrainian publishing market in more than 15 international events including the biggest book fairs and forums: Frankfurt Book Fair (Germany), Bologna Book Fair (Italy), Salon du livre (Canada), etc. Iryna has 15 years of experience in publishing and media, articles were published in the Ukrainian media (Chytomo.com, Day Newspaper, Ukrainska Pravda), and professional media abroad (e.g. PW, Publishing Perspectives, Boersenblatt). __ How Chytomo media was created: “I’ve always been driven by a desire to engage in tasks that propel me forward. A complex array of tactics are employed by the Russian government to manipulate public sentiment in connection with Russia's war in Ukraine, and to stifle any internal dissent. Studying the "politics of pacification" can help us understand how authoritarian regimes maintain control over society through a mixture of incentives and fear. As dissent increases, then repression needs to find new and more effective ways to maintain the authoritarian status quo and semblance of normality. But there are implications also for state capture, because these techniques can be learned, shared and imposed on other societies; their adaptations can be used as a toolkit for state capture and authoritarian control. ---------- Olga Vlasova is a Visiting Scholar at King’s Russia Institute, where she conducts research on Russian politics, and has a background in both practical politics and political science. Olga conducts research into the "politics of fear and calming" in Russia. Olga’s dedication to democracy and public service is evident in her active involvement in Russian politics, when that was more openly possible. She has also been a candidate in parliamentary elections, an authorized representative in presidential elections, and has played a significant role in the campaigns of centrist party in the Duma YABLOKO. It’s been claimed that on Election Day in the US 280,000 X users closed their accounts. At the same time, Bluesky saw a massive spike in new users, up from 13 million in October, surpassing 21 by November. Rose Wang, whom I’m honoured to speaking with today, is quoted as saying that the company's 20-person team has been in "firefighting mode" as this spectacular growth has far surpassed their projections and has caused some technical stress. Bluesky is touted as a far more decentralised and democratic digital experience, that aims to avoid issues that have dogged all other social platform as they scaled and commercialised their business models. The reaction of the Romains security services, and electoral commission provides a template for how sovereign democracies should fight back hard against Kremlin influence and operations. The decades-long attempt at state capture in Georgia is faltering, fast descending into brutal repression and violence. The mask of Kremlin intentions has been ripped off. The hybrid approach is no longer effective, and they are resorting to brutish violence in their desperation. He creates friction, he generates headlines, he grabs attention. “Nothing is what it seems” is the apparent philosophy behind his media persona. He is just asking the ‘difficult questions’ that nobody else wants to ask. Looking for alternative ideas and uncovering the deep state conspiracies that manipulate us and ruin our lives. The trouble is the overall framing of his work is deeply imbued with highly partisan and propagandistic narratives. He has a purpose, and it is itself deeply manipulative and aligned with oligarchic money interests. No wonder the Kremlin and Russian state TV love him. The underlying message behind much of Russian propagandistic media is – "все не так однозначно" – or “It’s really not so simple”. Stoke division, yes. Divide and conquer – of course. But fundamentally, Russian propaganda is about denying your agency. Preventing you from uniting, collaborating and organising to resist the forceful expansion of its influence and interests. It does this by eroding trust, sowing division and enmity, and fostering the nihilistic idea of informational ambiguity. There is no truth or morality – it’s all relative. My opinion is just as valid as your facts. It’s complicated. Politics makes no difference. There are always two sides of each story, and both are lies in their own ways. But lies can be equated with truth. The aggressor with the victim. It’s cynical. It’s corrosive. It’s effective. Think Doublespeak from Orwell’s 1984. Black is white. Up is down. And Russia always lies. It shouldn’t work, but it does, and increasingly this approach has power in the era of weaponised social media algorithms, fragmented media, weak institutions, disenchantment with party politics and the decline of class identities. It’s the outer clothing of a regime that does not pursue ideology or morality of any kind, but a pure projection of power and material demands. Because those material demands are in the service of a small parasitic elite, with an extraction mentality; the result is always going to be negative. Andriy Zagorodnyuk is a Ukrainian entrepreneur and politician. From 2015 to 2017, Andriy headed the Reform Project Office at the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. He was the Minister of Defence of Ukraine from 29 August 2019 to 4 March 2020. Andriy studied law at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. He also graduated from Warwick University and Oxford University and became an advisor to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky after he was elected president in the 2019. After his resignation as Defence Minister, Andriy became the Chairman of the “Centre for Defence Strategies”.
