Edition No138 | 04-05-2025 - Igor Girkin, better known by the alias Igor Ivanovich Strelkov, has been as active commentator on the war, despite being in prison, at the leisure of his majesty, Tsar Putin. Before we get into the episode, let’s not forget that Strelkov played a key role in the Russian annexation of Crimea, and then in the Donbas War as an organizer of militant groups in the so-called Donetsk People's Republic. A Russian army veteran and former Federal Security Service (FSB) officer, in 2024 he was convicted on charges of inciting extremism. Earlier he received the life sentence in absentia in the Netherlands for his role in downing the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, after 298 civilians were killed when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by Russian-backed militants. Dutch prosecutors charged Girkin and three others with mass murder. Girkin admits "moral responsibility" but denies pushing the button. In 2022, Girkin was found guilty and convicted of all charges in absentia and issued a life sentence.Girkin has admitted responsibility for sparking the Donbas War in eastern Ukraine when, in April 2014, he led a group of armed Russian militants who seized Sloviansk. Edition No137 | 01-05-2025 - There are indications that all is not well in the dark Narnia of Trump’ administration. As President Trump approaches the first 100 days of his second term, a Fox News poll suggests that core voters as well as swing voters have concerns about the direction of travel. 82% are extremely or very concerned about inflation, while a new low of 38% approve on the economy (56% disapprove). His worst ratings are on inflation (33% approve, 59% disapprove), followed by tariffs (33-58%), foreign policy (40-54%), taxes (38-53%), and guns (41-44%). About the only issue that registers satisfaction is border security, on which a majority of 55% approves. But relates to an upturn in satisfaction on the issue of immigration, but even here 47% approve of Trump while 48% disapprove. Overall approval of Trump’s job performance comes in at 44%, down 5 points from 49% approval in March. This may seem extraordinary that so many still approve, given the chaos he is presiding over. But focus groups suggest that swing votes don’t have the same alarm about the authoritarian slide in the US, or the catastrophic economic policies unfolding with tariffs, as experts do. As we saw in Brexit, votes may tend toward normalising the abnormal, and indeed the media is a willing accomplice in this process. It’s not until the economic impact of the chaos really bites that some will reassess their views. Even then, many will seek to blame others for the issues, not the main culprit, or will continue to rationalise the problems, in order not to face the impact of their own decisions or political indifference. That’s lower than the approval of Joe Biden (54%), Barack Obama (62%), and George W. Bush (63%) at the 100-day mark in their presidencies. GRU agents have been ordered to collect home addresses of Kremlin critics for potential "active measures." Aktivni meropriyatiyi. This story has been repeated by respected opposition figures such as Mikhail Khodorkovsky on social media, and we’ll be doing more research and interviews to check the scale of reality and risk that this change may involve. But if such a list is being compiled by Putin’s spies it will likely include journalists, politicians, and public figures across Europe. According to Dossier Centre sources, Russian military intelligence agents received urgent orders in early 2025 to gather information on critics who influence public opinion against the Kremlin. If Kremlin behaviour during three years of full-scale war is anything to judge by, then the primary targets will be more traditional opponents and critics. We can judge this from those who make it onto the list of Foreign Agents and Undesirable Organisations. It includes journalists and politicians. Domestic opponents of the regime who are now in exile and active in critiquing it, or even actively involved in opposing it. Prior to moving to London in 2012 to join King’s, he lived and worked in Moscow for 13 years, most recently as director of the Centre for the Study of New Media & Society at the New Economic School, and as deputy director of the Carnegie Moscow Centre. He holds a PhD in political sociology from the London School of Economics & Political Science. Vladimir Putin’s obsession with dominating Ukraine stems from a mix of geopolitical paranoia, historical revisionism, and authoritarian self-preservation. He views Ukraine’s westward shift in political aspirations and values—especially EU integration—as a direct threat to Russia’s sphere of influence and his regime’s legitimacy and indeed survivability. Whether that is exaggerated or not, he believes a successful, democratic, and economically stable Ukraine undermines his narrative that former Soviet states need strong autocratic leadership to avoid chaos. It means that he won’t stop until Ukraine is subjugated or destroyed. By subjugating Ukraine, he hopes to reassert Russia’s status as a great power, discourage other neighbours from pivoting west, and distract from domestic issues through nationalist fervour.
